Watch: Poet Porsha Olayiwola heartbreakingly reminds us all that black women’s lives matter too.
A New App That Lets Users’ Friends ‘Virtually Walk Them Home At Night’ Is Exploding In Popularity
Tens of thousands of people around the world are now using a free personal-safety mobile app that allows friends to virtually walk you home at night.
The Companion app, created by five students from the University of Michigan, enables users to request a friend or family member to keep them company virtually and track their journey home via GPS on an online map.
Although they can do so, the friend or family member does not need to have installed the Companion app. The user can send out several requests to different phone contacts in case people are not available to be a companion or not with their phones at the time.
Those contacted then receive an SMS text message with a hyperlink in it that sends them to a web page with an interactive map showing the user walking to their destination. If the user strays off their path, falls, is pushed, starts running, or has their headphones yanked out of their phone, the app detects these changes in movement and asks the user if they’re OK.
If the user is fine, they press a button on the app to confirm within 15 seconds. If they do not press the button, or a real emergency is occurring, the Companion app transforms the user’s phone into a personal alarm system that projects loud noises to scare criminals from the scene, and gives you the option to instantly call the police.

When I was younger, I wish someone had told me straight-up that not all adults experience “a calling”. That many of them never find particular purpose in a career. That sometimes, their job is just what pays the bills and they have to seek satisfaction and fulfillment elsewhere.
Because as an adult, this pervasive notion that there exists a perfect path for everyone, that people should love what they do, and that work is meant to function as a vehicle for fulfilling a person’s grand life destiny is not only inaccurate for many of us, it can be toxic.
The ideal is so ingrained that I have to remind myself constantly I’m not a failure because I don’t adore my job, and because I’m not rocking the world with my work. That is okay.
Sometimes, work is just work. There isn’t always a perfect career path, magically waiting to be discovered. There might not be this THING you were born to do. Sometimes, you discover that what you really want to be when you grow up is “paid”.
this is so ironic considering how the film is about NWA grappling w police violence and suppression
Rest in peace to Sandra Bland, a beautiful, powerful and strong woman who’s life was ended too quickly due to the arrogance and stupidity of people who are supposed to protect us. Sad, sad world we live in. You will always be remembered and loved. 💘👼🏾😔
Many women have been tricked out their softness, inaccurately led to believe that it equates to weakness and docility. But a soft woman doesn’t necessarily mean a fragmented woman. There’s actually great strength in the irresistible softness of femininity. While she knows how to yield and surrender when necessary, a soft woman could be leading a pack a wolves and not be noticed. Plus she’s got the charm to make others think they are actually leading, but gently and most lovingly, they are indeed being led.

He spotted her as she climbed, helped her down, and intentionally wore a reflector vest so the attention would be on him because he knew he wouldn’t be hassled as much. He supported but did not take away from her act. Allies, take note!
Depression isn’t always sadness
It’s also feeling numb at 3am but smiling and laughing with friends at 3pm
It’s also not being able to get out of bed even though you were fine the day before
It’s also not eating because you aren’t hungry or can’t be bothered, but also over eating because you’re bored and feel empty
It’s also loving too hard or not at all
Depression isn’t a constant feeling of sadness, depression can be hidden in happiness.
Your depression is valid even if people say it’s not just because you smile
Now that’s just solid logic.
