NAME: Solaris AGE: Twenty-Four OCCUPATION: Golf ball diver LOCATED: Tempeloch, Wales; London, England

i. Creatures and humans co-existed long, long ago. Animals, spirits, magical, and humanoid beings. Mermaids, too. Yet when the humans became inhumane, those water creatures retreated back into their own hidden world out of fear of being hunted or even killed. This underwater metropolis was nothing like you imagined Atlantis, but Tempeloch is a place of forgiveness. Both densely populated and small, you were taught to love thy neighbor long before the Bible was passed around!

ii. At the news of co-existence once again among them, the once betrayed people of Tempeloch are all too curious of what is happening on the outside world. Can you trust humans? Will an agreement be met between them and wixen? Have other communities of mermaids come out of hiding at the prospects? The untraditionally tight-knight community of Tempeloch took it to a vote. They would draw from King Catalis’ crystal chalice a single name, the name of a special mermaid, whose new duty was discovering the world of 1981 for their beloved neighbors, friends, and family.

iii. Solaris won’t be alone on her journey to break the surface -- two elder mermaids, also know as her guardian angels, Thaladora and Marlin -- would be posing as her parents and they would be known as the Smiths from London. It will be a scary journey, but they won’t be alone! Also, what the shellfish is a walkman?

“That’s a lucky guess, right—the k?” Clem asked, finally unable to stand there quietly and watch— whatever it was she was watching. Or maybe the woman had heard her calling to Kevin before she’d come over. She wondered vaguely if Puddlemere was putting some sort of interactive exhibition on in the park.

“...Owner?” Solaris and her ass length hair fell to the side. She looked as confused as a dog, as puppy Kevin, but attempted to adapt. You didn’t often own creatures in the water, rather made friends with them. Owner and friend could have been interchangeable up here on land for all Solaris knew! She wanted to know. “Ahoy.” The attention was then anchored to the blonde and she awaited the lovely Aussie shepherd to introduce her. “Solaris, with the S.”

“Depressed?” Sturgis almost laughed, because of the blunt accuracy. “Undoubtedly. As for how often I gripe about life…” He paused, mulling over the question. “An average of five times per week. More, if I haven’t ordered in Chinese food.”

Well, these were not the qualifications of a Marvin. Solaris flashed the stranger the cover of The Hitchhiker’s Guide as to clue them in, along with a smile that was equally award-winning as the book. “What do I call you?” What was the name for a human who complained an average amount and consumed such delicacies? She recalled her very first dumpling eaten weeks ago. It did bring a tear to her eye then and it did now. “Pork dumplings,” she proclaimed, knowing he would understand.

Clem looked down at her soaked puppy, mud caking his fur that was usually white. Thank god for magic, she thought to herself. She wasn’t sure if this woman was mad or not, and she watched the scene with a sort of indulgence she might have with a young child. It wasn’t as if Kevin was going to answer, even if this woman was Dr Doolittle.

“How is that spelt?” That was a thing that had mattered to Solaris, always having to spell out her name for all sorts of people around London. Would Puddlemere be any different? Gosh, it seemed so, because the dialects changed by the mile. It was difficult to keep up and it’s why she took every break she could to breathe. And converse with dogs. “How very. K is my favorite letter. Second after S.”

Pulled from his thoughts, Sturgis looked at the stranger. His brows furrowed in a quizzical manner. “Do I look like a Marvin? Be honest with me.”

Well, based on the book’s descriptions, it was more of the way Marvin had presented himself that left a lasting impression, more than the fact that he was a robot. “Are you depressed? How often do you gripe about life?” Rather bold to ask and she was not embarrassed one bit, blinking with lots of interest.

“Huh?” 

Mary didn’t read often. In fact, she wasn’t sure she’d ever, not even once in her whole life, read a book from start to finish. Magazines were fine to flit through, newspapers were bulky and dull, but with the iFlown had come a new kind of reading. One she loathed a little less. 

“Oh, yeah, it is.” Mary turned the screen towards the stranger’s eyes so she could look for herself at the review of Marvin Gaye’s In Our Lifetime on the device. “Someone sent me a review of his new album. It came out last month and I still haven’t got my hands on it. Are you a fan?”

There was no hiding Solaris’ fascination, followed by how impressed she was to hear that Marvin, the depressed little robot, had become a musician and found his calling. The page of the Guide was saved with a single wilted wildflower she’d picked while walking. Really, it was a weed, but the shade of yellow was enough to call to her.

“No..?” she hesitated a second. “I am human.” And that was all, as she moved on by glancing over the woman’s shoulder. “That’s him?” Hell’s shells! The Guide hadn’t said anything of this technology for robots. How much had the people of Tempeloch missed? Soaking up each word of this review like a sponge, she had only one thing to determine. “Can we hear it?”

“Would that be... Marvin?” Solaris glanced between the advanced device in the stranger’s hands and away from the book she’d indulged herself in.

“You’ve won!” With grace, Solaris accepted the loss at the hands of the Australian Shepherd who’d dared her to a puddle jump. Apparently England’s rain this afternoon made for perfect puddle weather. “What is your name?” she asked the puppy.

The question surprised Isla and forced her to actually think about it. “Well… I guess people don’t come here for the history, you know.” Did that sound rude? She sure hoped not. The wonder in the stranger’s eyes felt very familiar to her. “And they’re usually in a hurry too. People don’t take their time to look around too much these days.”

Simply, Solaris asked something she found to be of the utmost importance, “Have you not looked to the sky today?” It had changed about a thousand times and she was sure it had again since stepping into this WixBurger.

The stranger’s surprisingly exciteable tone was enough to draw Isla’s attention away from her task, brown eyes focusing on the dusty golden plaque before looking at the girl. “I’m pretty sure you’re the first customer to ever actually notice that old thing, you know.”

“Why?” came the question of the century as Solaris continued to allow wide eyes wander the restaurant. She stood half-in half-out the entrance, bony elbows jutting out and all. If she really put her mind to it, she may have realized the magical place lacked the romance she was inflating it and her noggin with. This Wixburger meant nothing to all, yet all to Solaris. She did not know that. She wouldn’t be able to fathom such a truth.

Isla was so focused on cleaning the counters that she only barely noticed the doorbell ring behind her. “We’re closing!” She immediately answered, too concentrated at the task at hand to bother with turning around.

There was an overwhelming sense of pride knowing she’d crafted her eyebrows rather perfectly onto her once blank forehead, almost mirroring this stranger’s now. “The first WixBurger?” she mused aloud, having read a gold plated plaque upon entry. It was golden! Yes, the very sign of success. “How very,” she attempted to remain cool in the face of history itself. History of wixen. Phew! Her journal would be thick with inscriptions tonight.
