Is it just me.. or do most horror manhwas/manhuas feel a bit yk.. underwhelming?

I’ve read mangas that genuinely terrified me, to the point of losing sleep, but somehow with manhwas, I rarely get that eerie feeling. I think its bc the artstyle often feels too polished or even a bit ‘cute’, its like the creators are afraid to make characters and such look grotesque? Which breaks the immersion for me. Even the gore or monsters sometimes feel.. too clean or standardized, like they’re missing something but i cant put my finger on it.

Being relatively new to the genre, maybe GDCG/GSGW set the bar too high for me?? Since it’s a novel and my first time reading one, the text forced my imagination to make things ten times creepier. I really want to find something, whether a comic or a novel, that gives the same eerie uncomfortable atmosphere, i have heard that LOTM is good, but what else should i check out?

I headcanon that Braun's body is like a Ken doll; he doesn't have any protruding reproductive organs downstairs, just nothing but smooth skin.

Think about it; the main reason he opted for a human body is that he is the host of the TV show, a "man-made" entertainment, broadcasted in the "human medium".

He needn't have a fully functional human body, but only mimic the physique similar to the guests or audiences who frequent, to exude familiarity and friendliness as a good talkshow host should. He is an entity who isn't governed by hormones or bound by human desires, which is why he thinks it is not necessary to carry those complications.

His human body is for practical and perfunctory reasons.

However, I think his mannequin-like body is extremely malleable. And he can create an exact (and functioning) replica of any human reproductive organs as he pleases, or as his "close somebody" needs.

Although it kinda hurts, I really like that kse started being more careful with braun, it reminds me that despite of it all, braun is still a ghost story (And not to expect too much from him).

Kse realised that he depended too much on a ghost story, and got his hopes up only to get disappointed at the end. The spy reveal arc reminded kse that braun usually only helps him out of curiosity and entertainment, that’s the main reason braun didn’t incinerate kse when his studio got destroyed; being kse’s good friend was an entertaining experience, and kse promised braun with something more interesting.

I just saw someone say that kim soleum and ryu gunwoo are similar, and that kse dosen’t socialise with ppl … what? Doesn’t kse has like the funniest personality, and multiple good friends who care about him irl? It’s just that he was too worried about keeping his persona while working for daydream.

we see kse knows how to socialise, please/handle ppl based on their personality (to the point of manipulating them if they’re evil) and definitely not bc he ‘read the DER’, as we see him meeting ppl other than the named characters.

…did I read the wrong version of the novel?

KSE does put a wall between himself and other people, for fear that if he attaches himself to others it will interfere with his desire to go home.

But that wall is shit. It is a shit wall. It's made of aluminum foil. Anyone with curiosity and the strength of a bored toddler can rip a very large chunk out of that wall and slither into his space.

Hell, the wall is so thin HE will rip a chunk out of it to pull someone in. That kid he saved in the supermarket? The one he starved himself for? The one he asked to close their eyes because he was going to cut his arm off for them? That kid? He cared a shit ton about that kid. Total stranger. And he does this so many times.

For heavens sake, the man was a salesman before he dropped into a ghost story. His whole job was clientele. We see him interact with a client, and they have a pleasent conversation about the man's daughter. He has friends in real life, also. We know this because we see a short exchange between them IN CHAPTER ONE.

YES! I LOVE how you describe kse’s personality/behaviour!!! And precisely bc of those facts I think kse is a social person! ppl don’t change easily, so even if he put a ‘wall’ to distance himself from the ppl inside the DER universe, he would still care even a little for them, and kse really knows how to observe others behaviour and then acts based on it, take section chief lizard for example! Most characters do not know how to talk to him without getting a vague answer, even tho lizard is very straightforward and would answer any question if asked in the ‘proper’ way, and kse figured that out from only a few interactions!

Those traits of soleum are the reason why he survived and saved many in this horror universe till now, so I don’t get why someone would think kse is an introvert and ‘scared to talk to ppl’ (I’m not saying that there’s something wrong with it! it’s just kind of mischaracterization for kse).

I finally started reading debut or die by baek deok-su (same author as GSGW) bc someone recommended it to me a while ago, and so far it’s pretty good!

I have to ask though… why is the hidden villain in all of BDS-nim’s stories always capitalism…?😭
