"I hate you." - by Solren. (TW: SELF-DEPRECATION. NEGATIVE CONTENT.)

I hate you. I always will. Every time I come across anything that reminds me of you, I can’t help but bristle in anger. The way you speak, the way you move, the way you look, the small habits that cling to every corner of your life—they make my damn skin crawl.

Sometimes I would catch myself smiling at the memory of you, softening for a fleeting second, and then that familiar irritation returns. Much stronger than before. You never know how much I’ve despised you, how often I’ve counted your flaws.

I talk about you to friends, to strangers, or even to myself. I narrate your failures, your selfishness, your carelessness… and I watch their eyes widen in shock or pity, thinking I speak of someone else entirely.

I hate your pride, your arrogance, your mistakes. I hate the things you won’t change, at the ways you hurt, at the stubbornness that refuses to bend. I hate you because I can’t fix you, can’t control you, can’t escape you… no matter how far I run.

And tonight, I stared at the reflection in the mirror, angry and tired, and realized… every word I’ve spoken, every frustration I’ve carried, every ounce of hatred I’ve felt… It had always been me.

I hate you. I always will.

At first, I truly enjoyed your company

I treated you the same way as I did to my friends

Until you began acting out

Until you acted like we were something else

Like we were lovers who had just reunited

No, the thought didn’t even cross my mind

I thought you were just being friendly to me

I thought this would only be a one time thing

But then I started hating myself

Because what you’re doing affected me

I started hoping day by day,

That you would finally step up and face me

To ask me to be your special someone

Though, who am I kidding?

You probably didn’t even like me at all

You went around your friends,

Introducing me so damn sweetly,

Calling me endearments in front of unfamiliar faces,

Claimed me without my consent,

And yet here you are, telling them I was only a friend

Do make it clear to me,

I wanted you, do you want me too?

I gathered my courage and asked you,

“Be honest with me now,”

“What are we? What am I to you?”

I was so happy you agreed to be mine,

Though that quickly vanished the day everything declined

What does your ex have to do with me?

You kept reminding me how I was just like him

I’m not even a man, I don’t look like him!

I am your partner, so start acting like it

Why are you treating me like I’m still your friend?

Aren’t I special enough for you?

How come you’re so sweet to your friends,

But you go give me the cold shoulder for no reason at all

Tonight, I decided that this has to end

"A Letter To My Future Self." -by Solren. (A Personal/Reflective Essay."

Hello, future me! It's November 28, 2025, marking this as the last day of our career planning program. As you watch this, you'd realize a few things. You're struggling. Pressured. And college is actually so hard. You might be rethinking your choices. But! I want you to remember something, so let me remind you.

We planned to teach ourselves the skills that we need to improve about ourselves, and honestly, that's a good thing! That just mean that we wanted to get ready for our future. Thus, we were already creating a plan that we were sure to follow, and we're set on that very goal.

We always believed that being an artist meant that we couldn't earn money. We also believed that our abilities and skills weren't good enough for our chosen career. But hey, we should trust ourselves and never give up easily. Just because we think it's impossible doesn't mean we should stop. Forget those negatives. Think positively!

Yes, I know you're tired. You've sturggled so much, but never think about quitting. We can take a break when you need it. You shouldn't burn yourself out. You're human too. We can let our frustrations out, feel tired, stressed, and all that stuff, but keep pushing! You got this. We got this. Always remember that! Don't let anything bring you down!

Future me, you've been through so much. You have to remember that you have come this far. Don't give up now. Just a little more, and you'll reach our goal! I believe in you. We'll make this happen for us.

"A Burning Flame." - by Solren. (A Sonnet with the theme of Love.)

When morning breaks and spills its golden fire, Your face appears within the waking light, A vision born of passion and desire, That banishes the remnants of the night. No storm can shake the haven of your smile, Nor time unweave the threads that bind our hearts For love endures beyond the longest mile, And grows more whole when all the world departs. Bright eyes, twin stars, do guide me through the dark, Their steady glow, my compass and my flame. No bitter wind can ever leave a mark On that which bears eternal, sacred name. So let the heavens turn and seasons fly Our love shall bloom, though all the rest may die.

"The Absence of You." - by Solren. (A memoir)

I grew up thinking that my father would never come back home. Even before the day I was born, he had already been going abroad to support us financially, which basically meant that he had been absent ever since then. One might even ask, “Why is it such a big deal to you? It's not that bad, isn't it?” To me, it has a huge impact in my life. This is my father that we're talking about. Not yours. Every year, I kept waiting for his arrival. I even dreamt that he was finally back home without him ever having to leave us again. It came to the point that I repeatedly asked my mother when he would be back, even though I already knew that there was no hope. 

Back then, I was still so young. Like every child, I would ramble about my day and the toys I want him to buy for me whenever he would call my mother on the phone. For me, I never knew that the closeness that we had would slowly drift away one day that would create a huge gap between us. As I grew older, now a grade 6 student, I started ignoring his messages and his calls for no reason at all. There were times where I'd see him send me a message saying why I did not want to answer his calls or what I was even doing. Till this day, I still regret the actions that I had done and realized how selfish I was. It still haunts me, and I still can't forgive myself for treating my own father like that. He gave me everything, I gave him nothing. 

My father, Arnel, is a good man. He had been through a lot, and he swore that he'd never let his family experience the life he had. He sacrificed his life to work just to feed him and my mother before having the three of us. My father made sure that we would have the best life without any ounce of the feeling of being poor. Despite what happened to him, he was a hero in my eyes. However, that loneliness still lingered in my heart. He left a void within me that I continued to fill with reassurances, but somehow, it doesn't disappear. Every foundation day, every family day, I'd stand alone looking at the crowd, hoping to at least see a glimpse of a parent that would support me. No one ever came for me. My mother was too busy, my eldest sister is a PWD, my other sister is studying, and lastly, my father is not in the country. This cycle repeated for what seemed like forever throughout my elementary days yet it still hurts me every time. 

Though, now that he's back home with us and is now a retired man, I tried to reconnect with him by talking to him and spending time with him. Unfortunately, the distance between us seemed to get larger day by day even if I had tried everything I could. Sure, I love him, but that didn't mean that we were that close unlike before. At least that's what I chose to think because I know that isn't true and that I am just too upset and selfish. I guess I am too prideful to own up to my own actions. I wouldn't say that I'm a good person, nor am I a bad person. This is just the result of a daughter who grew up without the presence of her own father.

"Am I Here?" - by Solren. (A Spoken Poetry.) With the theme of: Existential Crisis.

I always lay down by myself, and it's comfortable

Sunken deep on the soft mattress of my bed,

Gazing at the ceiling with a blank stare,

And through that window, the stars in the sky represent the endless thoughts

As I can't help but think of the question…

“Why exactly am I here?”

Were you the same as me? Or… maybe... it was just me

I know that I'm being dramatic—

God, I know I am!

I'm human, I'm aware

I'm supposed to be aware

But am I really?

Do you have a purpose?

Sure, you do. That's what you think

But for my purpose? Oh, I think about it a lot

Sometimes, existing makes me feel like shit

Was I only born in this world with a fixed purpose?

Study, get a job, get married, have kids, and then— death???

Some tell me that life is a blessing, life is a curse

Sabi nga ni mama, “gumalaw ka naman para umayos buhay mo”

But really, I'm just here trying to live—

Can you leave me the fuck alone?!

I'm trying to find a purpose here!

Can’t you see that I’m lost?!

If I don't do things, “wala kang kwenta”

If I do something, “sinasayang mo buhay mo”

What am I supposed to do in my life then??

"Treasure From The Shore" - by Solren. (A travel writing with a twist!) A seashell in Casiguran, Aurora.

For hundreds of years, I had lived long enough to witness everything. Huge waves washed me away from every direction, yet I never strayed far. The huge stones surrounded one specific area, and it served as a blockage that stopped me from getting yanked away by the strong currents. I can assure you that the view was rather lovely in Casiguran. But the only sight I had was the vast sky and the blinding sun. I could see a small glimpse of the trees that seemed to go on forever, but other than that, nothing more.

Everything is enjoyable during the morning till the afternoon, given how relaxing and cozy it was under the water while sunbathing under the heat. However, the sight I hate the most is when the sun starts to set and the darkness fills the area. It was rather terrifying, to say the least, given that I was only a tiny seashell surrounded by giant silhouettes. I could not make out my own surroundings, and one could say that I was terrified. The combination of having no clear vision due to how pitch black it was along with the terrifying sound of the waves crashing against the rocks made me anxious. I could not help but wonder, “what if I end up somewhere else the moment the sun appears again?”

In the end, despite my fear of the ocean — thalassophobia — I could not resist being in the same place over and over again. As long as I am with other fellow seashells around me, I could never feel afraid because I know that I am not alone. Knowing that this is not my permanent home, I let myself get picked up by people to be taken to their homes to serve as a collection or something to be admired. They may call it a souvenir, but for me, this is where I get to travel again, but this time, it would not be in the ocean any longer. There would or may be times where I am going to miss being in the place where I felt like I belonged, but I know that this newfound life would be a fresh new start.

"A Stay That Won't Stray." - Solren. (Travel Writing.)

I had always loved being in water. Even when I was younger, I tended to be drawn to the ocean a lot. Though, I only got to see them through pictures, which is why my family only brought me to swimming pools, given that they did not have any time to go to an actual beach since our hometown, Manila, is more on pool resorts rather than beach resorts. My mother had told me stories about how her own hometown back in Casiguran, Aurora, had a lot of beaches no matter which direction it was. It always led to different types of beach resorts, and I could not have been more excited in my life than I was before.

During our last day in Casiguran, I was told that we would go to the beach then head straight home to Bataan. The first thing I did when I woke up in the morning was pack all the clothes that I needed as soon as I was told that we were going to stay overnight at a resort that my aunt knew. We had not done anything like this before, so I was definitely in for a ride. Of course, we had to make sure that we had enough food and snacks since the venue was a lot farther than I had anticipated. After my family and I finished packing all the things we needed, we went outside and got in our car, heading to my aunt's house to pick her up before going to the resort named “Paradiso de Casiguran.” It was a 3 hour ride, and as we got there, it was already noon, so we were starving to death. Even though I had wanted to dive in the water, I needed to at least eat something. Moving onto the afternoon, I went ahead and changed my clothes into something more appropriate for the ocean. Throughout the entire afternoon, I spent my time swimming and submerging myself under the water. I would go around walking on the large path of, which I would assume, rough and sharp rocks just to look for sea urchins and tiny crabs that were inside of the holes. I learned that we were allowed to pick up seashells as the whole area was bombarded with them, to which I took advantage of and grabbed those that caught my eye. 

As the sun began to set, I went to take a shower and prepared for dinner. It was a lovely evening; the soft glow of the moonlight, the sound of the waves crashing against the large rocks, and the peaceful atmosphere. It did not take long before we had to go and get to bed early to avoid waking up tired in the morning. However, during nighttime, I had woken up from my peaceful slumber, disturbed by the need to go use the restroom. Since I was on a bunk bed and I was the one on the top, I had to be careful not to step on my parents, who were sleeping on the soft mattress on the floor. The cottage was relatively average, but it had enough room for 3 to 5 people. Once I had exited the cottage, I felt extremely terrified of the sound of the waves mixed with the darkness around me. I was all alone and the lights in the resort were dimly lit, which made it worse. With that, I made sure to be quick in using the restroom because I certainly did not want to stay awake for longer hearing such disturbing sounds. Pushing that aside, I got back to the cottage and managed to get a good rest despite finding it hard to do so due to how noisy it was. 

Overall, I truly enjoyed my stay in Casiguran. This was one of the most unforgettable moments in my life, and it holds a special place in my heart. I got to spend time with my family, bonded with them, and had fun with them. If anything, I would recommend going to Paradiso de Casiguran to those who want to have a relaxing vacation together with friends and family.

"All The Way From Dubai." - by Solren. Dubai Chewy Cookie from @miastarrsposts (Food Writing.)

There occurred an activity within the classroom that required everyone to bring food that brought them comfort. Upon looking around to find who to exchange with, a certain classmate of mine caught my eye. In her hands was a dessert called “Dubai chewy cookie,” and it piqued my interest greatly. Driven by desperation, I wanted to get a chance to taste the trending sweet treat that had people going crazy about. Hearing that it was the price of  ₱160 each at Yogee’s when I questioned about it was a pretty reasonable pricing considering the fact that the product itself was big enough to fit into one’s palm, so I expected a lot from it. It was heavily talked about online, praised for its texture, richness, and how delicious it tasted, which made my curiosity grow even stronger that particular day.

Visual wise, the mochi was coated with pure cocoa, and it was certainly eye-catching. The smell itself was rich and chocolatey, with a deep cocoa aroma that immediately sparked my appetite and set high expectations for the first bite. As I bite into it, I get a mouthful of the cocoa powder that was on the outer layer, and it definitely made things messy. It was soft on the first munch, reaching deeper would result in a crunchy core. The kataifi was toasted and coated in pistachio with a hint of saltiness, delivering a blend of sweet yet slightly salty taste with a hint of the bitter chocolate. The contrast in textures was interesting at first, as the chewiness of the mochi paired well with the crispiness of the filling. Each bite felt indulgent and heavy, making it clear that this dessert was meant to be rich and filling rather than light. However, the longer I ate the Dubai chewy cookie, the more I started getting sick of the flavor. Due to how sugary it was, it made my throat feel dry and I was parched. The sweetness slowly overpowered the other flavors, making the experience less enjoyable as time passed. It certainly was not as good as I expected on the long run, and I already feel regret upon tasting the food itself. 

Overall, maybe the dessert was not meant for me as it may be an acquired taste. It may taste good to some people, but not to some. Personally, I found the Dubai chewy cookie too overwhelming, especially because of how rich and sugary it was. While I understand why many people enjoy it, my own experience with it was not as pleasant as I expected. The dessert looked appealing and smelled inviting, yet the flavor did not match my expectations in the long run. This experience made me realize that popular food does not always guarantee satisfaction. Sometimes, curiosity leads to disappointment, and that is part of trying new things. In the end, this activity reminded me that comfort food is different for everyone, and personal taste plays a big role in how food is appreciated.

"Child Labor Realities." - by Solren. A Literary Journalistic Essay. (Based on a true story.)

Within a provincial area residing in Dinalupihan, Bataan, there stands a public school in Pita that provides free access to education for all children. However, despite the fact that some students truly desire to study, some are given no choice but to help their family with business or work a part-time job in order to support and provide for their family financially. This may be because of the situation they are in or are currently experiencing. Though, we are not to judge those who are pushed to enter early work as every child has a different story in their lives. ࿐ ࿔:･ﾟ࿐ ࿔:･ﾟ࿐ ࿔:･ﾟ࿐ ࿔:･ﾟ࿐ ࿔:･ﾟ࿐ ࿔:･ﾟ࿐ ࿔: A teenager, who would be called as "John," identifies himself as a simple student, but his life is far from being an ordinary one. At a young age, he had already learned about the fact that the world does not offer a comfortable and easy life to everyone. While other people his age were still discovering and enjoying their childhood, John was already learning how to stand on his own feet and face a life full of responsibility. Every morning, John is an ordinary student, just like the others. He attends his classes, listens to lessons, but once it hits dismissal time, everyone views this as the end of the day. However, for John, the day is far from over. He becomes a construction worker, facing the harsh heat of the sun, lifting heavy materials, and enduring exhaustion in order to support his studies and daily needs. He started working when he was only 15 years old, still in Grade 10, an age when many students were focused solely on school life. For John, however, responsibility came early. Although, his decision to work was not driven by choice but by necessity. Poverty was something he refused to surrender to. Continuing his education mattered deeply to him, even if it meant sacrificing comfort and rest. Balancing school and work is never easy. In the morning, he fulfills his role as a student; after school, he takes on the role of a laborer. Even if he lacked sleep, he still remained determined to push through. To him, discipline, careful use of time, and prayer guide him through each demanding day. The hardest part of John's routine is not just the physical exhaustion, but the emotional weight that comes with it. There are moments when he feels like giving up, when fatigue takes over both his body and mind. Still, thoughts of his future push him forward. His dream, along with the support of his family and his belief in himself, keeps him grounded in school despite the struggles. John always dreamed of becoming a teacher one day as he hopes to inspire young people who are facing hardships similar to his own, showing them that difficulties do not have to define their limits. For him, education is more than just attending school, taking classes, and listening to lessons. It is the key to breaking free from poverty and building a better life. This reminds us that education should be accessible and supported for all, especially for those who are forced to work at a young age. As students and members of society, we should help by being understanding, supporting school programs, and speaking up for children who need assistance, because every child deserves a fair chance to finish their education and succeed.
