“Look, Uncle Dean! I can be you.”
Harry beamed at him, and sneezed.
Where the youngest member of Dean’s family had just been standing - barely reaching Dean’s hips - now stood a perfect replica of Dean himself, facing him at eye level.
Although Dean couldn’t be happier for the kid, it hurt to witness the developments of others’ powers time and again. As he smiled at his nephew, the gaping hole inside him threatened to swallow him, and pulled him into a bad mood once again.
He had thought one day the pain would fade, but it never did. It kept gnawing at his insides, creating an abyss that threatened to swallow him. All his life, he had been the bystander when his family and friends discovered and revealed their special abilities.
Dean had smiled at them. He had been genuinely happy for each of them and celebrated their special day. After all, it was a turning point in life; a highlight that eventually changed everyone.
Everyone Dean knew, actually… except for himself.
