We've all been there. We've app'd a game and stumble into it and we have no idea how to get the ball rolling. Life continues, we fret, and the game moves on until you're scrambling, the mod is messaging you about activity, and you have nothing to show for it except a lingering desire to keep on even though you're lost.
If its a good game--someone in the game's already messaged you going ?? It can be a player or a mod but someone's out there going "hey, whats up? How can I help?" Maybe they've sent you suggestions on how to get active. Maybe they've sent you prompts. Whatever--there's someone out there looking out for you and thats awesome!
But sometimes there's not.
And a lot of times it feels like everyone else is just rolling right along, happy as can be, so what can you do if you wnat to stay but have no context for how to do so?
Rᴏᴜɴᴅ Oɴᴇ: Rᴇsᴘᴏɴᴅ Tᴏ Yᴏᴜʀ Mᴇssᴀɢᴇs
This sounds like common sense but its not. I play side characters most of the time. I message every new player with at least a "hello! I'm so excited to see you. Tell me what type of stuff you're looking forward to doing". Somehow, no one is quite sure how, but New Players I've never played with ... never get this message! I can't imagine how tumblr eating messages can be so specific but they are. Its always my message, too. Canon friendship players of new player's character, prospective ship partners?
All seem to get a response.
So first things first: respond to all your damn messages. People are going to find out if you are picking and chosing who to respond to and you never know--that random side character might be able to give you some pretty fun things to do.
This also is a bonus points moment: if the Mods don't say who they're playing? Odds are good you just stiffed a mod's character and they are going to remember that come the time your activity doesn't mean requirement.
Rᴏᴜɴᴅ Oɴᴇ (B): Rᴇsᴘᴏɴᴅ Tᴏ Tʜᴇ Mᴏᴅ
Lets say that the mods messaged you about activity. They've given you a warning, a notice, or even a dead line.
RESPOND TO THAT MESSAGE.
I know it's super stressful but you must respond to that message. Let them know you understand. If you don't know what counts as activity: ask them. Mods are human, this means they are likely to give you a little wiggle room if you talk with them. If you don't message back you might get a nasty shock when "responding to memes" doesn't let you keep your character.
(hint its obvious you GOT the message if you suddenly become active so just respond to the message)
Rᴏᴜɴᴅ Tᴡᴏ: Tᴀʟᴋ ᴛᴏ Sᴏᴍᴇᴏɴᴇ
SO you have responded to all your messages but somehow it's still not working. This is when you have to be proactive. Talk to someone. Talk to a player you trust. Talk to the mod. If you're still SOL--post in the OOC.
You can't expect people to help you if they don't know you're struggling.
You also can't expect a player whose already tried to contact you to feel inclined to put themselves out there again. So if you "forgot" to respond to someone? Get to that now. Go message them instead.
Talk.
Rᴏᴜɴᴅ Tʜʀᴇᴇ: Sᴇɴᴅɪɴɢ Mᴇᴍᴇs
Okay, so you're a delicate flower and you just can't manage messaging someone. That's OKAY. Sometimes you need an ice breaker. This is SENDING MEMES.
So you flaked and missed someone's meme posting and its a week old. Go ahead and send them one of them. They might not get to it, but the little effort of sending a symbol or a random number can work wonders. This is particularly true if its a relationship meme which can help generate some backstory or a relationship that should be fun for both of you.
Meme's are a way to generate discussion!
Rᴏᴜɴᴅ Fᴏᴜʀ: Dᴏɪɴɢ Mᴇᴍᴇs
Okay. So. Meme's are important methods of getting into your characters head and most players will agree: we like seeing them done even if its just "what that character likes to eat for breakfast".
That said--if you've been mostly MIA... no one cares what your character has for breakfast, how they look when they're mad, or what they decorate their room with.
So if you're struggling and decide: NO. I AM GOING TO DO THIS GAME BECAUSE I LOVE IT AND ITS CHALLENGING...
You're going to have to take a gamble and possibly fall out of the nest.
This means if you are doing memes make sure they are drabble meme's or relationship memes. These, if questioned about activity actively involve characters other than your own--which, while not paras, miniparas, or chats, I would say indicates intention to up your activity with others.
Eɴᴅ Pᴏɪɴᴛ
In some games it might make a difference if you play a "core" character (in Marauders this would be Lily and the Marauders or Bellatrix, for example)--but just as often it doesn't matter one bit. The only thing I've ever noticed making a difference is being a mod and having your character known (that alters the tone of getting plot and welcome messages responded to amazingly quickly)!
The key to winning at a game is to post relatively often and to talk to the other players in the game. Mods can try to help facilitate this, and players can to! But in the end its no one's job to do the heavy lifting for you and to win you have to put your hand out all on your own.
Its a gamble, but so is everything else.
