Decided to read the Harry Potter books. I'm not sure if I'll stop part way through, though. I had read the second and sixth back in the day and the sixth was a slog
Have finished the first one. I'm kind of surprised by how ordinary it feels. It has the fast pace that early entries of popular series tend to have with a little bit of humour and a lot of flavour world-building
Finished chamber of secrets a couple days ago
The comedy has certainly gone up, especially the mandrakes teenage weeks lol
The world building in this volume is enmeshed in the plotline, also introducing some amount of nuance with Dudley remembering Harrys birthday, Hagrid acting suspiciously, and Tom being a head boy
Noticed that the descriptions went from being equal for all to describing fatness more often and more negatively
Finished prisoner of azkaban,
writing has shifted to hiding it's information more to the point of making the pace too slow, especially in the beginning of the book despite the complaxity of the story scaling up length, feels a bit wierdly structured with almost all the action being in the last 7th
feels like an intermediate author experimenting with something a bit more ambitious and just not quite succeeding, this also applies to the main story
there are enough red herrings and such that I really wonder what the experience would be not knowing the story in advance, especially the roles of black and peter in the potters death. The building information is so spread out and the reveal so compressed
this one is less comedic and more serious and I didn't notice body descriptions the same way I did in the last book despite the aunt marge situation
