In celebration of The Rose of Versailles movie coming to the West, I started commissioning an English translation of the BeruBara Kids comics!

7/10 for the new movie

(I have my reasons)

So I watched the Rose of Versailles film after waiting for years and this is what I have to say about it:

The animation was gorgeous, but it seemed like all of it was bright in colour, including the parts that were meant to be more depressing in tone. They also changed how certain events happen like for example, the peasant boy is meant to be shot, but in this version it's just people rioting at the rich guy. A lot of content was cut from the film, which I understand in a way as it's impossible to place all of those arcs into a 2 hour movie, but come on, it feels like they just gloss over random events.

An example of this would be Bernard and him introducing himself, which as fans of RoV we'd know him to be the Black Knight, but in this he's basically never seen again after he introduces himself. The same deal goes for Rosalie too.

Also, Oscar is barely a character in this until the last hour or less I'd say. The ending with her just didn't hit the same as it did in the anime or manga. Speaking of the ending, there is no way they actually just decided to conclude Marie's story by a slide show presentation with some music over it.

The problem with this film is that it's so clearly not made for a new viewer. As someone who has been a fan of it for years, I of course understand what is happening, but someone like my friend who is to watch it, won't necessarily understand what each part was actually meant to be

Overall I'd say it's a 7/10. I love it for what it is and I'm glad it finally became accessible. Although it took out a lot of my favourite parts in RoV, it did do the parts that it explored some justice and that animation was just lovely :)
