Hannah Starkey - Photographs 1997-2007
Selection of images from Hannah Starkeyâs 2007 book, Photographs 1997-2007. This is one of my all time favorite photographers. Iâve reread the interview at the back of the book so many times over the years. Itâs so helpful to hear an artist speak on their work and their process. Looking forward to her next book!
âHannah Starkeyâs early works were staged photography scenarios based on the experiences of young women living in the contemporary city. Meticulously constructed and often cinematic, they suggest a narrative that had been artificially suspended in time.â
Interview excerpt:
Your pictures involve a complicated construction process that involves actresses, models and sets. How did you arrive at this way of working?
HS: Well, there is a very basic reason for it. I didnât feel I had the right to point the camera at someone without asking permission. And once you ask permission, you disrupt the scene. I would rather experience that instantaneous moment and then photograph it. I suppose I distill the essence of a scene, cast it and recreate a small aspect of it. I am interested in redefining the real, and staged photography seems to allow for an interpretation of the real-real time and how it is experienced both internally and externally. It reinforces our perception of ourselves in relation to the outside world.

âAt times when youâre taking photographs you realise that youâre hooked on composition and youâre no longer really aware of what it is youâre seeing. Composition can quickly become narcissistic: you fancy yourself as an artist. The pictures you take in that frame of mind are often completely empty, precisely because theyâre too perfect. Composition is not only a problem every time you take or enlarge a photo, itâs also a product of your attitude as you look at something and the mood you are in.â

Recently my grandmother found out Iâm queer. Her response was to tell me that she disapproves of me living with my âfriendâ (i.e. my girlfriend) and that I should give up my vile queer ways and become a Christian (Lol). She even sent me a bible. Here are its remains, which I made into black-out poetry.
Poem 1: Bisexual (from Leviticus 19:9)â âHave sexual relations with her. Have sexual relations with him. Have sexual relations with both a woman and a man. Have sexual relations with yourself. Vomit on everyone who does not respect you.â
Poem 2: Fisting (from Judges 8:5)â âwater/ lap the water/ drink/go down to drink/your hands/go down/I give into your hands/go down/encouraged/down/on the seashore/the whole hand/your hand/inside/I get to the edge/and shout/grasping/crying out/Beth/Beth/Beth/Beth/Beth/God/I cameâ
Poem 3: A Letter to the Exiles (from Jeremiah 28:13) â âZe said: âDo not let lies name you, nor harm your heart. Gather. Raise the sword against them. They scorn and reproach, for they have not listenedâ again and again have not listened.â â
Poem 4: Child (from Ezekiel 16:22) â âYour father and your mother rubbed salt in. No one looked on you with pity or had compassion enough for you, for on the day you were born you were despised. Live! Grow. I looked at you and saw you were enough.â
Poem 5: Father (from Ezekiel 16:22) â âYou never adored us. You became very angry. You took some out on us. Your sons and daughters were not enough? You slaughteredâ in all your detestable practicesâ our youth.â
Poem 6: Misandry (from Acts 27:41) â âDangerous men should be broken.â
Fucking beautiful.

Dearest Friends, and Bernie Supporters of Massachusetts, Texas, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, Colorado, Oklahoma and Alabama (and neighboring states).
Thereâs 8 days until âSuper Tuesdayâ (March 1st). This is âelection dayâ. This is the day weâve been waiting for to make the turning point and make a stand. And I need you, and you personally, to help me.Â
Iâm spending 3 days here in Massachusetts canvassing and trying to get out the vote.Â
What does that mean? Sometimes Iâm making phone calls. This is really easy, and an effective way to let people know, âhey, voting is soon, you should do itâ. The basic campaign idea is: make democracy work, remind people to vote, if people vote. Turnout helps the liberal candidates. Door to door canvassing is the other big part. Itâs not anything confrontational ever (if youâre worried). You knock on a door and say, âHey, my name is Dan, Iâm volunteering with the Bernie Sanders campaign. Are you planning on voting in the primary on March 1st?â When you say that, usually, because of the greatness of data analysis, theyâre going to be like, 'Yeah! I was going to vote for Bernie, but I didnât realize it was this Tuesdayâ or 'Thanks for letting me know!â. Sometimes youâll find, 'Nah, I was planning on voting for Hillaryâ. Itâs not a big deal. You just say, 'Thanks, have a great day!â and move on. Sometimes youâll come across some undecided voters. My last house of the day yesterday didnât know who Bernie Sanders was. I said, 'you can check out berniesanders.com, but, the few things I like most about him is that heâs the first president Iâve wanted to go out and talk to people about every day, because he cares deeply about the middle class, about me, about my friends, about my parents, my grandparents, the working class people, the people who make minimum wage, the people who deal with rising health costs, unemployment, and heâs just wanting to make wall street pay their fair share, instead of politicians taking it out on usâ. Honestly, if youâve listened to Bernie ever, you can probably recite his stump speech. ('Thereâs been a systematic redistribution of wealth from the 99% to the top 1%âŚâ).Â
Itâs easy, honestly, and a HUGE part in winning elections. We need people to do it. If you live in a neighboring state, and donât mind driving a little bit, please think about it. If you canât drive, hereâs how to make phone calls. www.berniesanders.com/(twoletterstateabbreviation)phonebank. Example: www.berniesanders.com/txphonebank. If you need a carpool, to know where you can get to a campaign office: http://map.berniesanders.com/. Itâs easy. I swear. Itâs a little nervewracking the first three or four times, but after that, itâs easy, itâs fast, itâs a great way to walk/drive areas and towns youâve never been to. Bring a friend. I promise, itâs a good way to spend an afternoon.
Letâs talk about some polls real quick: Massachusetts - Sanders: 47.5%, Clinton: 44.0% Texas - Sanders: 34%, Clinton: 57% Virginia - Sanders: 37%, Clinton: 54% Georgia - Sanders: 24%, Clinton: 61% Minnesota - Sanders: 28.5%, Clinton: 54% Colorado -Â Sanders: 49%, Clinton: 43% Tennessee - Sanders: 32%, Clinton: 58% Oklahoma - Sanders: 44%, Clinton: 46% Alabama - Sanders: 31%, Clinton: 59% Vermont - Sanders: 86%, Clinton: 10% Arkansas - Sanders: 32%, Clinton: 57%
Hereâs the fun part: Unlike the presidential election (and some of the Republican Primaries and Caucuses), the Democratic Primary and Caucus system is a proportional delegate system. Every vote that Sanders gets is another delegate for the convention, another vote to help elect him the nominee. Every vote counts. Even in the states that Sanders is losing, he still gets delegates from that state. Itâs why being close in Iowa and Nevada was so important. Winning is better, but being close is still VERY GOOD. The longer the game goes on, the more we can shape and change the election, and actually win this. Right now. Hillaryâs won 2 contests, but the pledeged delegates (aka, what we vote on), is equal: 51 a piece. This continues because: EVERY VOTE COUNTS. I can say that a bunch of times. Every time that % ticks up for Bernie, itâs another delegate closer to winning the whole thing.
Also: South Carolina, if youâre there. Youâre in this too, youâre this Saturday. Same goes for yâall. Heâs losing big there, but again, every vote counts. You get points for trying, and staying close in SC would be a big wake up call for the Palmetto State democrat establishment.
This is off blog topi c, but important, so I'm sharing.
