anyway, this is as good an excuse as any to say the thing on my mind:
Long story short, internet life is exacerbating certain mental health issues and Iām in the process of rearranging priorities in life-- online art presence is losing its place among the highest of them as Iām no longer pursuing illustration as a career. Iāve decided my artistic energy is best saved for personal projects, insofar as that is possible right now, and that my career efforts are better spent on something more personally meaningful than creating in exchange for payment. Nothing wrong with that, as a lot of people find freelance illustration incredibly fulfilling--itāsĀ just so far from where my own happiness and meaning lie, Iāve realized.
Thank you for your concern, guys <:) Still deciding what to do with this tumblr... I think Iāll keep it around for a bit, though I might not be particularly active. In addition to the above, I also just need a very long break. Iāll be back when Iāve figured things out a little more, whenever that is.

I'd assume it's different for each piece, but what pen size do you generally use for a full, anthro/human bodied image?
It varies mostly based on resolution and the look Iām going for (and programā brush sizes feel different in Photoshop, for example, and I use Manga Studio)-- but for this current illustration Iām working with a brush size of 15.4 pixels on a resolution of 2480x3508! I donāt think it varies too much based on whether it's feral/anthro/human.

Okay so a million years ago someone asked me about colouring lineart, as they were having trouble, but 2014 was a busy and stressful year and I'm not the best at correspondence in the first place, so while I meant to write up a little thing to answer that person, I didn't manage to get around to it
Buuuut now it's a new year with a new goal to be better at the whole... "actually being interactive on social media" thing so here goes! Pretty much sorry to anyone who's ever asked me anything it's either NICE AND I GET FLUSTERED or A QUESTION THAT REQUIRES THINKING, but I'm gonna try and do better starting now!
Some Lineart Approaches
1. "Disney"
One of the most straightforward ways of colouring lineart out there. This is how I learned about colouring lineart as a wee babby on the internet-- looking at 90's Disney screencaps (read: drawing copious Lion King fanart) and trying to mimic it.
Mostly it involves taking a slightly darker and (usually) less-saturated version of the base colour, or the shaded version of the base colour if you actually shaded your thing. Not a hard-and-fast rule though, sometimes things look ~UNACCEPTABLE~ unless they're slightly more saturated, like the cat's nose, please don't take anything I say rigidly because colour is SO FLEXIBLE
2. Black Silhouette
This is an approach I see around a lot and it's really cute and simple and appealing IMO! Lineart is coloured, like above or with different saturation or hue choices, with a black or dark colour for the lines that describe the silhouette. It suits a really graphic style I think, as it tends to flatten.
3. Form-based Approach
The approach I usually tend to roll with. Darker lines around the forms that need to stand out most: the forms that are completely separate from each other. Medium coloured lines around forms that are close together but separate, and light coloured lines for surface details-- basically the more important the line, the higher the contrast. This is my personal favourite approach because I really like a sense of volume in my work, and I can play that up here even without shading.
These are only a few approaches, again, not exhaustive. You can incorporate lighting and atmospheric perspective into your lineart approach to name a few more ideas
Choosing Colours
I think this is what the original question was getting at but I wanted to cover some approaches first. Now if that list wasn't exhaustive THIS LIST IS SUPER NOT, colour is nearly unlimited, anything anyone can tell you about colour is more like a roadmap to come back to if you get lost on your awesome roadtrip than anything you need to or should stick to rigidly, trial and error and seeing what you like and making decisions consciously is much more important than colour "rules", none of these are rules, just stuff I think is worth considering!
1. Tinting Neutrals
Okay I mean I cheated a little by using two different off-whites, but this works even with pure white! Using a strong colour gives you the illusion of a slightly tinted white, or grey, or (we'll get to this later) black.
2. Neutrals/ "Standard" Colours
I'm doing my form thing here, but I'm still picking colours in a really similar way to the "Disney" example above. Darker, slightly lower saturation, etc. This is a really common way of choosing lineart colours, it usually looks nice, and the benefit is it's pretty natural-looking and unobtrusive, which might fit better than anything flashy depending on the context!
3. Changing the Hue
LET'S TALK ABOUT COLOUR THEORY, just a tiny bit, nothing intense!
At least for me, yellowish colours usually command special attention when it comes to picking appealing shading or lineart colours. This is because yellow has the highest intrinsic value, which means if you took the purest form of each hue without considering saturation or lightness, and converted it to greyscale, yellow would be the lightest (with indigo/violet being the two darkest). This means that yellow loses its integrity when you make it darker, and turns into this weird sort of greenish colour-- not really recognizable as yellow. Contrast this with a really dark, desaturated violet: Still looks violet. It's REALLY REALLY HARD to make anything with even the slightest violet hue not read as violet.
Anyway though that means I like to cheat a little when picking lineart colours for yellow, or orange, or yellow-green bases. I'll darken it a little bit, then move the hue slider away from yellow:
Sometimes when I'm feeling loud, it gets to the point of using red or magenta lines for a yellow/orange base, or turquoise for a chartreuse base (look at the cat's eyes for the second example!). Even with the green, where you can usually get away with using a darker version of the same green, it always seems to add a sort of richness for me.
It helps even when I don't make the lines as wildly saturated:
Bonus: you can also do the cool-colour counterpart of this, where you shift the lines for reds/magentas and blues more towards indigo/violet. Not as necessary for me personally, but can add visual interest!
4. Lighter lines
Uhh
well, I mean, sometimes you can get away with using lighter coloured lines for a black base but it's actually really hard and I'm not that good at it but I wanted to throw it out as an idea because it's seriously rad in some stylized contexts. Same ideas with tint apply here, and the form idea appears here too, where the lightest lines describe the most important forms and the darkest lines describe the surface details because in the end it's a contrast thing.
Once again go on some adventures with colour and techinque-- for lineart and for everything-- experiment and find things you like! This is just meant to be a jumping-off point :>
So there you go! I hope that was in some ways helpful, and gave anyone struggling with lineart colours some ideas on how to shake things up!
