    percy’s father is a scholar, and her mother is the daughter of a popular tavern-owner. though both are human, percy was born with pink skin, a tail, and the beginnings of horns—a tiefling. when she was a child, they split, and margaret remarried to a merchant while louis married a widowed minor noblewoman. there was almost immediately tension between persephone and her stepmother, but with margaret and her new husband on the road, there was no escape for the young girl.      from a young age, she also possessed the ability to see the dead. her father and her stepmother sought the opinion of multiple experts to figure out the reason for both that & her devilish appearance, but nobody was sure. the priests and doctors consulted on the matter seemed to think it was some ancient familial deal come back to haunt the bloodline. louis’s new wife blamed margaret’s ancestors, and treated percy’s abilities with fear. she pushed for percy to act normal, to make herself small and pleasant—all framed as being for percy's own good. her inherent abilities went untrained, her horns filed down (they never did grow back), and still her stepmother was unappeased. the abuse took its toll, and percy fled for bard training as soon as her father allowed her. once among peers, she began to explore her own abilities, and she became almost a rebel. she would slip out with classmates to explore the rougher sides of town. eventually, she met a young man there named felix, a few years older than her, who took her under his wing and taught her how to be a rogue. percy fell for him quickly and felix returned her affections, showering her with affection and telling her how much he loved her. she thought they would be together forever, but one day felix broke the news: he was a nobleman's son, and his father was demanding he come home and get married. percy, naive, begged him to tell his father that he loved her. felix simply said look at yourself, percy. he'd never allow it. and even if he did, the others would never accpet you. or us felix wanted her to remain his mistress, but percy, heartbroken and betrayed, left without another word. her heartbreak only increased when she discovered she was pregnant with felix’s child. knowing she would be disowned, the terrified young woman sought the help of one of her bard mentors, a man named maxwell finch. max, ever a father figure to her, happily took both her and her soon-to-be child under his wing. once the babe, a tiefling girl named laura, was weaned, percy set out on her own as a traveling bard. her daughter remains with max, where she is safe.       now 27, she makes money from performing in taverns—sometimes music, but often stories or poems—and takes commissions to compose poetry for nobles and royalty. what extra money she has, she spends on gifts to send back home to her daughter. recently, she was captured by mind flayers & infected with a tadpole. now she's searching for a cure, too afraid to tell her traveling companions about the daughter she has hidden away for fear that they'll treat her differently.

the purple bard is in pieces, smeared across the ground & the other's clothes, her face ... annette is not a stranger to blood. between the experimentation of her mother & the requirements of living in the woods, pain & blood are more familiar than she'd like. but this? this is more than she was prepared for. the memory of the flavor of blood tugs at the inside of her mouth, face blanching. they are both afraid, it seems. persephone had said there was something wrong with her, & while the druid had believed her, she had not expected this. lae'zel had said alfira was weak. is that what did it? would she be next? small, nervous, quiet, it'd be easy. persephone could do it right now, or really whenever she wanted. a chill runs down her spine.

annette's mouth is dry, stuffed with wool like a corpse. she knows of different reasons one may be so compelled to commit horrors -- possession, the details of a particularly nasty bargain, powerful magic ... "what -- i ... i don't ..." she doesn't know these people. she has secrets, too. whether they cure this tadpole or not, the druid knows she's doomed. (now, it's just a matter of this now-four-way split in the path. persephone's blade, the tadpole, becoming a hag, or herself. one path is looking far more pleasant than any other.) "i don't know what to say."

she wants to say i won't hurt you, but she can't force her mouth to form the words. after all, wouldn't it be an empty promise? she doesn't want to hurt the druid, but she hadn't even known she wanted to hurt alfira until she'd awoken standing over the mess at her feet. "i just... i don't want them to hurt me." them. their other companions. people who, she'd hoped, were starting to trust her. "i know i deserve it, but... i... whatever this is, it must be who i used to be." not that she can remember. "and whoever that was, i don't want to be her anymore. i want to be good. you believe that, right?" she must sound half-mad, must look half-mad.

it's obvious annette is afraid of her. it makes bile rise in her throat, even as the evil thing within her whispers weak, pathetic creature. she'd be thankful if you put her out of her misery. but those aren't percy's thoughts. percy likes annette, as much as you can like someone you barely know when you hardly even know yourself. "you can, um... maybe you can cast hold person on me, and tie me up, or something. so it's safe. i don't want to hurt you. i don't want to hurt anyone."

but the difference is, she wants to protest, the difference is they can't help it -- someone else did it to them. (the hypocrisy there is lost on her.) if she had followed the rules -- played the game -- or even just gone off & killed herself before they ever left for the underdark. that idea continues to seem more & more appealing the farther from that point she gets. "i could've prevented it. i could've made it where ... where i didn't slow everyone down. i can't walk, percy, i can't do anything. i ... i shut down in reithwin, at ethel's, every time -- s'not gods, s'not anything but me."

there's a small puff of humored air at the mention of lae'zel -- who had once, some time before, asked the half-elf if her main talent was flower-picking. that brief moment of laughter is cut very short by percy mentioning some of, in annette's opinion, the strongest people in their group. it's her mother's fault, she thinks. but more so than that, it's her fault for believing it, even now. she knows that witch wasn't her mother, that it was a bad situation. but maybe if she'd been good, been better, she'd never know. the pang in her chest at percy's list of compatriots grows stronger with each name & each note of her deeds. she sniffles, remaining otherwise still. "i - i -- i jus' wanna be helpful ... but i feel like. like i'm a weight. slowing ... everything down. like now. i can't ... i can hardly move, perce ..." her recovery has been too slow for her own guilty conscience. "i jus' feel like m'always in trouble & never useful enough."

"you're not the only one in trouble, though. i mean, karlach's..." thinking about their friend's plight always sends a pain through her chest and settles a lump in her throat, but she pushes through: "karlach's engine is barely stable. there's been two separate occasions where somebody was looking to capture astarion. mystra only allowed gale to be stabilized on the condition that he self-immolate to save the world. we're all fucked, in one way or another, you know?" she swallows past threatening tears, shifts the way she's sitting as her leg sparks with pins and needles. "and gods know you're not the only one who feels useless. i feel useless, most days. but... nobody's as hard on us as we are on ourselves. except maybe our mothers, but i'm of the strict belief that they're both miserable wretches, and their opinions are worth shit."

between the tadpole situation & her latent paranoia at sleeping in the open, she's still been sleeping light. even when the druid drifts off slightly into the woods outside of camp, anything can wake her up. but she isn't sure what it is that wakes her up this time, though it's not a mystery for long. for there stands this tiefling she's only recently met, covered in blood & standing a small distance from the source of the carnage. annette's eyes widen, flitting over percy & the surroundings with panic. i didn't mean to, she says. the druid curls into herself almost defensively. "what ... what -- what happened ... ? h-how did you ... ?"

the half-elf's eyes flit about, gauging each escape route & what would be fastest or safest. just in case.

soaked in blood, gore clinging to her nightclothes—it should all make persephone sick. the fact that it doesn't is enough to leave her shaking, tears brimming in her eyes. she'd tried to voice that there was something wrong with her, missing memories and a violent hunger, but nobody had taken her seriously and now... now... she looks down at the body that used to be alfira, trying desperately to remember what happened, but she can't. she'd gone to sleep in her tent, and woken standing over the body of her fellow bard. "i... i don't know, i don't remember." she tries to breathe, but her racing thoughts overwhelm her: they're going to push you out. or worse, they're going to kill you for what you've done. and you deserve it.

"please, annette, i didn't mean to! there's something wr—wrong with me, something that... drives me to do things. and i've been fighting it, i swear i have, i didn't—" she wants to wipe her palms on her trousers to get the blood off, but there isn't a clean spot to use. a sob slips out of her even as she tries to swallow it: "i don't want to be like this. i'm scared."

the druid leans forward, forehead resting on her friend's shoulder. of course annette knows percy would not lie to her -- not on purpose. her arms feel leaden at her side, pinning her inside her tent. the paralytic may have exhausted her nerves, but she could feel the stiffness of her muscles the whole time she laid there. she hadn't the heart to tell percy the amount of times she'd listened to detailed, almost poetic descriptions of how her captors would kill her & her friends. or the times they'd reminded her how vulnerable she was, cool blades resting flatly on skin as a warning. "you're th'only one who doesn't. i ... i know how ev'ryone else sees me." dead weight. only here because back at the beginning, percy had insisted. she's not a fool.

"annette, darling, the only person who sees you that way is you." her voice is barely audible, as gentle as can be. after a second, she adds: "well, and maybe lae'zel. but lae'zel has a very narrow idea of what strength looks like, hm? karlach doesn't find you weak. wyll certainly doesn't. neither does halsin..." a little smile, an attempt to inject some levity into her speech "i can go on, you know. i'm very good with my words." annette's inability to see her own worth weighs heavily on percy—percy, who knows that she's guilty of the same thing, herself. how many nights has she spent beating herself up over not being good enough, stoic enough, helpful enough? and yes, she'd insisted nettie tag along in the beginning, but her friend—her sister—has more than proven her worth. "all of the potions you've made? those darkvision ones in the underdark, for gale, and all the healing potions, and the poisons for me and astarion—all the healing spells you've cast? hells, acorn, even if all you'd done was keep me company, you'd be worth having around."

despite percy's insistence, annette cannot help feeling as though she ought to have been more clever, or put up enough of a fight that someone heard, or something. anything. instead she had laid there, paralyzed, incapable of anything but smelling the sewers mixed with death & listening to the whispered threats of bhaal cultists. her body still feels numb, though not quite to the extent of when she was first rescued. her fingers can't quite move yet, & her speech is fumbled & slurred, but she can mostly walk on her own. "she didn' pick anyone, though. w's me. they ... they said it w's. 'cause nobody'd notice." the tears well up in her eyes. "i'd be easy t'kill. cull th'heard, they said." she hasn't enough energy to shake percy's hands away. "m'weak."

if she could—and if it wouldn't be both foolish and a waste of magic—percy would bring the bhaalspawn back just to kill her all over again. ending her once wasn't enough to make up for the pain she caused annette. "i don't think you're weak," she says quietly. it's not an empty platitude, either; percy's always thought nettie is more powerful than she gives herself credit for. with one hand, she smooths back the druid's hair. "i don't know why she took you, nettie. maybe because she saw how important you are to me. but anything they said to you, they didn't say it because it was true. they said it to hurt you, that's all. to be cruel. if they really aimed to take the most helpless of us, they'd have taken yenna, don't you think? she's just a kid."

something turns in percy's stomach at her friend's question. she can't tell if it's sadness that annette thinks that, or anxiety at the thought that she might've done something to prompt this worry. "no, of course not. of course not." shaking hands cup nettie's face as percy shakes her head insistently. "acorn, you could never disappoint me. this—" being kidnapped by orin, being replaced, she means all of it "—it wasn't your fault. she could've easily picked anyone to grab. i'm sorry that it was you. i'm just glad you're safe now."
