friend gave me an idea so here we go #Lmao:
The Sonic Fashion Blogpost!!
(keeping this one mostly light Ummmmm.)
Sonic's always been a 90's icon, as it was the era he was concieved in, and also his most popular time in the limelight, only matched by the current popularity of the movies, and thus, lots of aspects in Sonic's design have been inspired by 90's aesthetics and surrealism, including fashion.
pictured here, are Naoto Ohshima's early concepts for Sonic's classic design, as well as the final one, for contrast. In an interview with him, he had mentioned before, that Sonic's shoes were meant to take after popular musician Michael Jackson's own boots, reflecting the stylistic decisions & trends of the time.
Little fun fact, many people think Sonic's shoes are sneakers, but in reality, they are actually boots!! Most interpretations of the character seem to stick with this interpretation, as it was Ohshima-san's design intention.
Most of the other characters from this era generally fit the same blueprint Sonic follows, Tails' design is that of a cute, yet cool sidekick, befitting of Sonic's character, Knuckles' design is even inspired from that of black/afro-american culture, with his dreads, Metal Sonic took Sonic's design and fashion trends and turned them on their head, while Sonic's design appeals more to natural elements and is organic, Metal's design is inorganic, while Sonic's boots are more sleek and cool, Metal's are robotic, inorganic, all helping to drive home that theme of environmentalism VS. industrialization this series has had from the beginning, Amy's design is more cutesy, meant to reflect her bubbly, lovely attitude and charm, I could go on, really.
The Adventure-Era marked a stylistic shift for Sonic designs, and in turn, fashion, the character designs got more detailed designs, longer limbs.. etc. to help with the shift from 2D to 3D, and the style much more resembled that of which you'd see in Graffiti/Skate parks.
A whole lot of this era's art, done by Yuji Uekawa, who would go on to be the series art director, and character design supervisor, just exudes that late-90s - early-mid 2000s energy, like something you'd see on a shirt from the time. It stands out amongst the crowd with its unique style of shading, its dynamic poses and its unique perspectives, its smooth, curved line-art, practically just Begging to be printed on a shirt or a crop-top, and as a testiment to just how truly solid these redesigns are, they're still the current basis for Sonic design, and modeling, which can be reflected in Uekawa-san's current Sonic Channel art, and in what design SEGA continues to use for their models.
This can also be reflected in some of the outfit changes for the cast's wardrobe changes, for this post, I'll use Eggman as an example.
As seen here, you could kind of tell Classic Eggman's style was much more cartoony, befitting for the series' style at the time, while still retaining the general idea that this was the series' main villain.
for Modern Eggman, Uekawa-san decided to give him a slightly more grounded appearance, changing his proportions around to be more realistic (or, well as real as an egg-shaped man could be, anyway), his jacket got more detailed, to fit his grander ambitions of conquering the world and building Eggmanland, he even got goggles, to signal to the viewer what his main thing was, building machines to help him with his ultimate goal.
Or for another example, Amy Rose.
in the Classic-Era, her design was again, trying to fit within the Classic blueprint of Sonic and Eggman, while also looking very cute and charming.
In the Adventure-Era, she had the most changes, her silhouette completely changed!! And her clothes did too, instead of the snazzy sneakers she wore, she got stylish red boots, and a very appealing red dress to go along, which ties very well with the rest of her design.
Really, in many ways, these designs almost mirror each other in a lot of ways, and I find that very appealing. Both of them, and that goes for the rest of the cast, have very nice fashion sense, at least in my opinion.
(verysmallendnote Ummm sorry this didnt delve much into the fashion part but to talk about sonic fashion its. mostly a discussion about character design. you can kinda clock that im more of an artist than a fashion designer LMAAOOO imsowwy nathe ^^''')
