He was going to laugh him off, one of his obnoxious ‘signature’ laughs, it wasn’t his first time being called cringey and he was sure it wouldn’t be his last, but he held it in upon hearing the rest. The grin faded.

It stung.

Poor kid probably didn’t know. And wouldn’t it be awful, Naruto thought, if he were the one to break it to him. It took the older boy all the strength he could muster. Slowly, he pushed himself to smile again and—for his friend’s sake—he made it genuine. 

“A'course you wouldn’t know—it hasn’t happened yet. You like to make this dumb joke. 'Say you think I’m such an idiot you wanna get out of Konoha. 'Say you think it’s contagious. And I keep sayin’ the day you do I’m draggin’ your ass back.”

     “...I don’t even know what you’re talking about. Are you okay?” He just wanted him to cancel the transformation--that’s what that was, right? He’d transformed to look older...right? Taking just a small step back, he watched his expressions carefully.

     It was getting frustrating, sitting here without the same knowledge that Naruto had. It was almost unbearable, he couldn’t stand it.

     “You’re not making any damn sense.”

“Oh yeeaahhhhh…?” unlike when they were kids there was nothing was stopping him from sending the poor kid to the hospital in a headlock. If only Sakura could see the looks of him, she’d be mad at him for acting like a jerk but—this was Naruto, he didn’t think that way. Instead he imagined her hugging onto his waist, admiring his machoism.

—“I can’t believe I was into a guy like that…” she’d say, tracing her finger over his chest.

“Ever gotten your head shoved in a toilet before?“ he asked between chuckles, ”‘Kinda hard abandoning your friends while you’re guzzling shit water.” 

He was kidding of course……… wasn’t he???

     “What are you, five? Any self respecting bully knows that’s an outdated method. It’s cringe inducing, at best.”

     He didn’t even want to imagine what might be going through Naruto’s head, he was afraid that it might cause him to get sick.

     “Why’re you even talking about abandoning friends, anyway? I’m staying right here, dipshit.”

He tried to stay mad… but it was hard. Sasuke was so much smaller than he remembered. Maybe he’d gotten taller. Either way, he couldn’t help but snicker.

“Not so tough now…”

     “I’m twelve. You expect me to be six feet or something??” He crossed his arms, mild irritation obvious. He couldn’t stop himself glaring.

     “I’ll bite you.”

upon finding out that he had fallen on top of a person, his main concern went to looking for any type of injury on their body. but as the other spoke and he realized there wasn’t anything serious, he calmed down and looked up. 

ah…. ah? oh no. oh no no no no no. 

he knew this face. knew it far too well from the team 7 photo that hung on their living room wall, the one on sakura’s office desk in the hospital, and once when he was in kakashi’s apartment where it was tucked securely above high shelfs . but of course this should be impossible because although the person before him is his father, it’s also not. it’s a young version of him. eerily young, eerily impossible. he doesn’t hesitate to scoot back, scared. 

“huh??? what? uh… stargazing!!!” he says almost too fast, too loudly, too stupidly.

     “Stargazing in a tree...” Well, that wasn’t the craziest idea. Only a slight bit dangerous, sure, but it wouldn’t get anybody any closer to them. Really, there was no point to him. Deciding he shouldn’t exactly trust the boy, he was silently observing him, taking in his features.

     It was lucky he couldn’t recognize much of his own genetics at this point.

     “You decided to be up there alone? From what it seems like, you don’t have too much control of your chakra.”
