Orion, Son of Darkseid

I am Orion. The second son of the Apokolips' dictator, Darkseid. As a child, I was traded to New Genesis' as part of a treaty where I learned to control my rage. However, my first father broke the treaty, and war broke out. Eventually, the war made its way to Earth 3, where I joined those few heroes left to find the Crime Syndicate. During a battle, I sacrificed myself to trap these dark beings in Pandora's Box with me. But now the box has been opened, and we've all escaped.

For something so simple, it was amazing how much it differed from home. “Eh, that’s debatable. I’ve had better,” he commented from table adjacent. 

“I’ve had it, where it was barely above sludge. This is ambrosia, but feel free to introduce me to even better. I won’t be against that.”

“90% of things were bad on my earth. That’s why it didn’t have long to live when I was imprisoned.”

“Noted.” Oliver turned away from window to take in the freeloader who had happened to fall into his care. “I’d love to know more about there. Just not about the coffee.” 

“You don’t like me much do you? You’re suspicious of me,” Orion studded the man the keeper was married to. “That’s good, you will keep her alive longer if you trust no one. Box keepers aren’t known for having long lives.”

“Which universe do you want to hear more about, the one where you don’t exist to my knowledge and there’s only New Genesis and  Apokolips? Or the one where the hero Batman is a evil and the world’s best defender is Lex Luthor?”

All Kory could muster in response was a hum of approval as she sipped a scorching yet delectable sip of her own drink, bouncing absently in her seat at the flavor. The mound of whip cream she had requested left an impression on her nose and cheeks. “You should have gotten their special of the day, it is probably the most delicious concoction I’ve ever sampled,” she remarked with her customary zeal; she probably repeated the phrase around 20 times a week. “Kyle says I shouldn’t drink so much caffeine because I’m hyper enough already, but I think he was only teasing”

“I’m pretty sure it doesn’t effect me…” an entirely untrue statement, which was evident by her jittering composure currently. “I’m sorry, what were we talking about?” 

Orion grinned at the bubbly alien as he absorbed her bouncy energy. She was a delight to be around and reminded him so much of his beloved one and her lightness and brightness. 

“I like things simple. Coffee is meant to be enjoyed in its most simple form. All I need is cream and sugar to make me happy. Though for awhile I did drink it black,” Orion said with a smirk. 

“You were telling me about your planet,” he reminded her gently.

Oliver’s expression soured at his seemingly kind compliment. He didn’t know how long he would have with Felicity on this merciful plane. He’d be a fool if he didn’t think about his mortality in juxtaposition to the fragility of this timeline. If his death meant his family would live, he’d have to make that sacrifice for the greater good. “Kinder words won’t deter the answers I seek.” 

“Why would she trap you inside? Are you guilt of similar crimes? The details that have become painfully clear doesn’t exactly spell out a pretty picture.”

“As I did not expect it to; however, I was paying your partner a compliment. She has been very patient and protective of me as I recover. I hope that one day I may return the favor to her.”

“No, I was the only one strong enough to hold them both long enough for Pandora to imprison them. However, it meant I was imprisoned with them. I do not regret my choice. I’d make it again; however, I would have liked to be returned to my Earth instead of a new one.”

She snorted at the stranger’s description of his friend. His Jason sounded quite like her Jason. He sounded fun, this stranger less so. She may have empathised with him but she didn’t trust him and how could she? He was a God, after all. They’re all the same in the end. “That’s all well and good but I gotta ask: what the Hell are you doing on our Earth, Godling?”

“We were fighting two beings, the Psycho Pirate and the Anti-monitor. We had a prison for them, but I was the only one strong enough to hold both long enough to be imprisoned. However, it also resulted in being imprisoned myself. The Guardian tells me that several months ago our prison was opened. That act released all of us from our slumbering imprisonment. That’s how I appeared on this Earth.”

“I’m sorry.” Carter muttered. He did not have experience in family betraying him, thankfully, but he had been a father. To him there was nothing more detestable than someone who would betray their child for selfish gains. “But at least those who raised you taught you the strength you needed.” He sighed, before frowning a little at the item Darkseid apparently sought. “Forgive me, this is not something I’m familiar with - the anti-life equation?” He repeated with a curious raise of his eyebrow. “I get the gist but… who would create such a thing and why?” He questioned.

“My adopted family was very kind and patient with me. Even though I often did not deserve either from them. When we set chase to my birth father, I found my second peace in the least anticipated place. A world so dark that there was little joy. But my Birdie always could find the joy in a day, no matter the darkness.”

“The anti-life equation is a transcendental mathematical formula, we don’t know where it came from, but should one find it and control it they can enslave whole worlds. This is the goal of my father. Domain over ever world, in every dimension, through out the multiverse. Were he to gain it there would be little we could do to stop him. I’m unsure if there is a resolution to the equation,” Orion said solemly as he thinks of the dark possibilities.

rory couldn’t help but smile a little when he spoke of her world so fondly - it certainly gave her a different perspective. her lips did pucker though at the realization that the fondness came from the appreciation for what he must have lost, and the thought alone was painful.”i’m sorry your world suffered.” she muttered with a consoling expression, though she didn’t make any attempts to offer any physical comfort. “what’s the thing that got your attention the most?” she finally asked, “something that…stands out.”

“All world suffer in their own way, but thank you. I cannot forget what my second home went through. mistakes that I don’t want to make again,” Orion said graciously. “The children, on my Earth they were rare. Disease and danger had wiped most out and those left parents hid away like the treasurers they were. Here, I find myself drawn to places where their free laughter reigns. No one should lose innocence too early. It’s a joyful reminder that there is still hope and happiness to be seen.”

Now that was a million dollar smile. Kory had never fully comprehended this phrase until now, her own grin growing in immediate response to his. She’d seen a lot of lovely faces in her time on earth and truthfully she didn’t believe she’d ever found anyone’s appearance unappealing, but this face seemed sculpted by some divine hand. Though he was large and perhaps intimidating in bulk all Kory could visualize was a kind of bonny teddy bear, in soft hues, with the piercing blue eyes and just a hint of green. He was nearly as good looking as the gentle doctor she was so fond of. Lashes fluttering, she suddenly realize not only was he still speaking to her but she was quite literally gazing at him. Her nose wrinkled in a snort at her own foolishness. 

“Sorry, you’re very distracting” she admitted with little shame. “I am Princess Koriand'r of Tamaran, but my friends call me Kory” her toes began to lift from the pavement of their own accord. “New Genesis? I’ve not heard of this planet before” 

Orion smiled gently, he was aware how attractive the New Gods were. Beings of divinity there were few imperfections in them. He was used to people enjoying his aesthetic so he let her look. 

He chuckled, “My Love often called me stupidly handsome,” she said remembering her teasing words. “Our leader would not often allow us to work together as we often distracted the other.” 

His smile brightened, “Another royal, it’s a pleasure,” he said bowing his head. “I have not heard of Tamaran, you must tell me about your people and culture,” he insisted. 

“New Genesis in not of this Earth. Our Earth is much more advance then this one. People have evolved into two races. The New Gods of New Genesis and the New Gods of Apokolips.”

She nodded. “It’s not an easy feat for my kind but it is possible. But I’m afraid I don’t know anything of Earth-2. I’m sorry.” She knew what it was like to be locked out of your own home, not knowing how your people were. Her siblings could be dead for all she knew. Yes, she knew the stranger’s pain. She truly was sorry.

Her eyes widened at the use of the word ‘young’. It was rare for an immortal to call her young and she couldn’t help the small giggle the escaped her. “I’m much older than I look. I’ve known countless generations filled with pain. And, in all honesty, the bitterness makes me funnier.” She joked. Sort of. She wasn’t really lying, the occasional salty undertones of her humour added a lil flavour to her usual ‘dad’ humour.

Orion felt his hope fall. There would be not getting back. No way to know what happened to his friends. To his love. To that world. Had the Crime Syndicate succeed in destroying it? He sighed, and nodded his gratitude for her sympathy.  “I understand. Not all Earths are accessible with out violence.”

Orion smiled, “You reminded me of a friend, Jason, he had a very similar sense of humor. Dark humor is was my love called it. He often made jokes about his own torture and quasi-death. Of his time trying to destroy those he know fought with.”

“i’‘m not saying hide in the shadows. nothing ever came from secrets besides pain. i’m saying…not everyone is trustworthy enough to just tell this to.” rory explained - at least she was still beginning to learn this much herself. her expression turned a little grim at his choice of expression, “like getting ready for war?” she mumbled nervously as her arms rose to wrap around her body nervously, “the guardian’s got great taste. well, it’s my day off. is there any particular place in the city you’d like to see? i can show you around.”

“There will always be a battle to fight, young one. But I meant more of trying to understand this new Earth I find myself on. It’s so different from the one I was last on. You have heroes, and they out number the villains'. People walk freely unafraid. I had missed this sight. I have no destination, I walk and look and try to comprehend.”

“Doesn’t have the amount of heroes, it will still be possible to hurt the ones they love, if the villains know who they are,” he pointed out, he knew there was still a possibility even when they had a secret identity, but would be bigger if they knew who they are, “They do that to protect them.”

His fear was so big, that when he put his suit on, a device changed completely his face, “That’s devastating, I hope so too, and that the same won’t happen in here in the future.”

“You do it to protect those you care for, those that cannot protect themselves. But then how do you explain those like the Arrow who have revealed themselves to allow for accountability? How does he protect those that he loves?”

“It saddens me. They were good people. People I cared for deeply.”

“I like to think after living so long I picked up a few pearls of wisdom along the way.” Carter chuckled, taking the compliment with a grateful smile. “New Genesis? That was your home?” He questioned. Whether a name for his universe, or for a specific place within it, he couldn’t be sure. But clearly it held importance to the other man.

“Depends on who you ask, I suppose.” Carter noted with a small smile. “Technically, my abilities are born from the radiation of a meteor shower - but then my life was bound to Kendra’s and Savage’s because of his curse and my prayer. So magic has a part in it too.” He replied with a small shrug. “Demi-god is a… simplistic way to explain it, and that many people chose to use. One that I stuck with for many years when I didn’t really understand it myself. It would be accurate to say I’m part alien, perhaps part magi and still a bit human, thankfully.”

Orion smiled, “New Genesis was my adopted home. My father is the devil knowns a Darkseid. He is the devourer of worlds. When I was a child he came up against New Genesis, they were evenly matched and the only thing that was accomplished when they battled was death for both sides. So they made a pact A prince of Darkseid and a prince of New Genesis would be traded as part of a peace treaty. I was sent to live with a peaceful people. They raised me and helped me gain control of my anger. Use it as a power to protect instead to destroy. After centuries of peace we discovered that Darkseid had broken the treaty. He searches for the anti-life equation. He believed it was located on another Earth and began ripping through the multiverse to find it. We gave chase, and were finally able to trap him on Earth 3. But I believe we ultimately failed and he is still out there trying to find the Anti-Life equation.”

Orion nodded accepting Carter’s explanation, “There are many things in the multiverse that we do not understand. I will add this to my list.”

The lyrics she was cheerfully muttering to herself abruptly caught in Kory’s throat as she processed the incredibly handsome male was addressing her. The earphone was plucked from her right side as she blinked in awe, her brain taking a few uncomfortably long moments to comprehend exactly what had been said. But Kory was never truly embarrassed for long, the sentiment dissipating at the prospect of engaging with someone new. New friends came as a warming spring sun, a sense of brightness and light in the soul and she thrived from it. “Not your earth?” she questioned, with a tilt to her curly mane. “Well, allow me to welcome you then. This technically isn’t my earth either but it is a delight I assure you” she added, not understanding that he was referring to realities as opposed to planets. 

“Kory Anders, pleasure to meet you!”

Orion smiled at the young woman, everyone on this earth seemed so friendly. He was glad Felicity has prepared him as best she could, but he did not remember this face in her presentation. “Thank you, I am Prince Orion of New Genesis. But most call me Orion,” Orion said formally as he had been instructed by his father, and then more causally as Felicity had insisted on . “And who do I have the pleasure of meeting today,” Orion asked with a charming smile.

“We can’t say for certain it’s gone, either.” Carter offered, though he knew it was highly unlikely. If Orion had had to abandon it so long ago, then it was unlikely any remnant of his home survived. “And even then, if you survived, maybe others did too. Stranger things have happened.”

“There was a power point?” He questioned with a small laugh, before nodding in confirmation. “Two hundred and eleven lives to be exact. Including this one.” He muttered with a rueful smile. “I’m something of an expert in not getting the chance to say goodbye properly, just like you.”

Orion nodded, hope was something he could still hold. Hope to return to Earth 3. Hope to return to New Genesis. To be reunite with those that he loved. “Thank you for reminding. Felicity was correct when she described you as wise. I’m still considered a young god by our standards. I have much to learn in the ideas of patience and being still as my father called it. “

“There was, it was very helpful. It included pictures and videos. She often quizzed me too so that I would know friend from foe. My instructor on New Genesis would have been proud of her.”

“That is young for a god, that was something Felicity never mentioned. She said she wasn’t sure when I asked if you were a god or magical since you lived forever. She said she thinks you’re multiple things. Have you declared it?”

“Third? Well, that’s two more than I’ve ever seen. You’re quite well-travelled.” Carter replied with a joking smile, taking Orion’s hand in his own and giving it a firm shake. “It’s a pleasure, Orion. I’m Carter.” He greeted before chuckling a little at his question. “She explained a bit of your situation to me - not all of it, but enough. If there’s anything I can do to help you adjust then I would be glad to.” He offered with a small shrug. “I’m somewhat displaced myself - though I’ve come to appreciate this place more than I ever did ‘home’.”

“Leaving any of my homes has never been my choice, since birth. While I would like to go back, I must be realistic. Earth 3 may no longer exist,” Orion said honestly. Between the Crime Syndicate and Darkseid the world could have been destroyed by now. He wasn’t even sure how long he had been imprisoned. 

“Carter; I believe she mentioned you in her PowerPoint. You have lived many lives with your beloved,” Orion asked trying to confirm his memory. If he was in fact the same person, he might know somewhat, at least, of what Orion was feeling.
