I am haunted by “Bad Boys” because in one episode we get John Winchester A+ parenting, but we also get to see a teenage Dean experiencing something he never had.

For the first in 11 years, he doesn’t have to be the adult.

He doesn’t have to carry the responsibility of keeping both himself and Sam alive, or act as John’s emotional support (when and if he’s actually present).

And we find out how much he thrived in those months. Dean, who always saw Sam as the brains, who always offered self-deprecated humor with the implication that’s how he sees himself. (Which Cas confirms when the empty takes him).

We saw that in a stable environment with an adult that was actually present, he could do well in school. And Sonny actually took notice and rewarded his efforts, something he does for all the boys. I would also like to add that Sonny presumably had dozens of boys in his care over the years and yet he knew each and every one individually, Dean included. By the end of those two months, I’d argue that Sonny knew Dean better than John did.

And don’t even get me started on Sonny’s praise, and while Dean does smile, you can tell he doesn’t really know how to react. When’s the last time that boy heard an adult tell him they were proud? Because we sure as hell know it wasn’t John (and I’m looking at you S1 finale).

And I hate John Winchester 😭 He had absolutely no reason to take Dean away from his date and dance except that he could. There is zero reason John couldn’t have given him a few hours to just be a kid.
