âSee you then,â Lottie smiled serenely. She wiped the smile off of her face in time for Alyssa to walk in, becoming more serious as Alyssa started to run her tests.
The smile on Lottieâs face was so cute and Soraya had to bite down on the inside of her cheek to keep herself from smiling too much. When Alyssa was done with her tests and ready to move on, Soraya shot Lottie a cheeky grin. âSee you in a bit. Get some rest.â She said as she made her way out of the room.
lottiechang:
âListen, uh⌠maybe when your shiftâs over, you can come back and we can hang out for real? It gets kind of lonely and boring.â Normally Char would be there, but Lottieâs mother had been called into a photoshoot last minute.
âSure, cutie. That sounds great.â She glanced at the clock on the wall and bit down on her bottom lip. âIâve got a couple of hours left but Iâll be sure to stop back in when Iâm done. Wouldnât want you to be lonely.â Soraya stated, smiling at the girl as Alyssa walked in. She stepped back to allow Alyssa to work, her head tilting to the side as she watched.
lottiechang:
For once, the word friend didnât sting. Lottie wanted to be Sorayaâs friend. Sure, she could fantasize about kissing her, but at the end of the day, Soraya was smart, and passionate, and caring. Lottie wanted her in her life. âWell, you doctors kind of have me as your prisoner,â Lottie teased as she gestured to the room around them.
She laughed lightly at Lottieâs words and shook her head. âI suppose I do have you captive here. But Iâm not a doctor.â Soraya replied with a playful wink before she slipped off of the bed, knowing that Alyssa would be back soon with the supplies.Â
lottiechang:
Lottie tried not to dwell on the words fun and sweet, although she knew that the second Soraya left the room she would grin like an idiot over them. âNot really. More like⌠wanting to be my friend because Iâm sick? Iâve had a lot of people only start caring once they find out. Itâs a false friendship so that the other person feels good about themselves. I know thatâs messed up, and not you, but⌠thatâs where Iâm coming from. And thatâs how I feel around most people.â
She nodded her head just a bit when the girl explained herself a bit more, squeezing her hand a little bit before she let go. âIâm your friend, Lottie. Not because of your sickness and not despite of it. Iâm just...your friend okay?â Soraya explained, offering her a genuine smile and a shrug of her shoulders. âYouâre not gonna run away on me, are you?âÂ
lottiechang:
âNo. Yes. Maybe, I- I really donât know.â Lottie sighed and nervously played with her hands. Now that Soraya was actually looking at her, the reality of the situation hit Lottie. Soraya knew. âIt was just nice knowing someone actually liked being around me, and werenât just⌠I donât know, being my friend out of pity.I kind of hoped youâd just figure it out and spare me this conversation.â
She frowned just slightly at Lottieâs words, chewing on her bottom lip for a moment before nodding her head slightly. âSo...you thought that if I found out I wouldnât want to hang out with you anymore? Or I would stop wanting to hang out with you?â Soraya sat down carefully on the bed and reached out to grab Lottieâs hand lightly. âI like hanging out with you, Lottie. Youâre fun and sweet. And you having Cystic Fibrosis doesnât change that.â
lottiechang:
âIâve been good. Lots of coughing, but thatâs normal. I- yeah.â Lottie replied. She let her smile dim when Alyssa exited the room. âSoraya⌠I really donât know what to say. I didnât want you to find out like this.â
Soraya nodded at Lottieâs words, pleased that Lottie hadnât seemed to have notice anything more than the coughing. When Alyssa left the room and Lottie spoke up again, Soraya let out a soft breath before tilting her head and, for the first time that day, actually looking at the girl for more than just a few moments. âDid you want me to find out at all?â She questioned, genuinely curious about the answer.
lottiechang:
Dropping her gaze, Lottie didnât push it. She didnât want to make Soraya look unprofessional in front of supervisor. Training her eyes on the wall behind Sorayaâs head, she tried not to think about how close the woman was and how warm she felt as she followed instructions.
âOkay, good. Thank you.â She murmured, pulling back a bit and moving the stethoscope to settle around her neck. âWeâre going to do some blood tests and see how everythingâs going with that, alright?.â She glanced back at the clipboard and nodded. âYour blood pressure seems to be fine so weâll grab what we need and get you started with that. How have you been feeling lately?â She questioned, nodding at Alyssa when she mentioned that she would go get what they needed and Soraya should stay with their patient.
lottiechang:
Leaning forward, Lottie shivered slightly at the coldness on her thin body. She wondered what was going through Sorayaâs mind as she listened to Lottieâs barely deep breaths. How would Soraya treat her differently? Turning her head, she coughed violently into the crook of her elbow. âSorry,â she murmured. She knew that coughing was actually good for her condition; rather, she was apologizing for Soraya finding out like this.
She shook her head slightly when Lottie apologized and offered her a small smile. âYou donât have to apologize for coughing.â She replied, not wanting to think about the apology any further, not when her supervisor was standing a few feet away. Soraya moved the stethoscope to the front of Lottieâs body and pressed it against her chest, trying to be completely professional in the moment even if it wasnât necessarily easy. âMore deep breaths please.â
lottiechang:
Lottie placed her device down when she heard footsteps nearing her room. She immediately froze at the sight of Soraya. Sure, there had been a chance that the student could be stuck with her room, but Lottie hadnât thought itâd actually happen. âUh- alright,â she blinked. She tore her eyes away from Soraya to look at Alyssa. âDo your worst.â She hoped the words, said teasingly, would help assure Soraya that Lottie was going to be okay. She tried to keep her cool but it only lasted a few moments. She bit her lip. âI mean, not really. Donât⌠yeah. Have at it.â
Soraya shot a bit of an awkward smile in Lottieâs direction, smoothing out her scrubs before she moved to place the clipboard on the table. She definitely hadnât been expecting to see Lottie that day, especially not in that situation.  âOkay, sit forward a bit for me please.â Soraya said softly, bringing her stethoscope up to press it lightly against her back. âDeep breaths for me please.â She continued, her eyebrows narrowing as she listened to the rattling of Lottieâs lungs.
lottiechang:
âWeâll have a nurse in here in just a few minutes to do some more tests. Okay, Charlotte?â
Lottie scrunched her nose up at the use of her full name but nodded. It only took a few moments for Lottie to feel bored, and if it hadnât been such a sudden hospital stay, Lottie wouldâve thought to bring her ukulele or something. As such, all Lottie felt was loneliness. She hated being stuck in hospital rooms by herself. It was hard for Lottie to feel like she had real friendsâmost of the time, it felt like people were only being her friend out of pity or to make themselves feel better. âLook at me! Iâm such a good person, being friends with the sick girl!â The thought caused bitterness to rise in Lottieâs throat. She considered texting Soraya, but she didnât want to bother the woman who Lottie knew had much more important things to do. Playing video games on her DS it was, then.
Being nearer to the end of her nursing degree, Soraya spent a lot of time following other nurses around, but was also given the reigns to attend to some patients on her own. That day sheâd been following around one of the nurses, Alyssa, that she genuinely enjoyed working with and so she wasnât in such a bad mood when she was paged during her quick food break by the woman to meet her at the station. When she arrived, she was handed a patientâs clipboard and given some instructions. She nodded her head and then glanced down to look at the information sheâd been given. Charlotte Chang, Cystic Fibrosis. She blinked a few times and then shook her head, couldnât be, could it? Why wouldnât she have told her? Soraya let out a breath and then followed her supervisor towards the patientâs room. When she saw Lottie seated on the bed, she chewed her bottom lip and then stepped in. âAfternoon, Charlotte. Iâm Alyssa and this is Soraya. Weâre going to run you through some tests okay?â

âWanna play some video games?â Lottie gestured to her Xbox and stacks of various video games. âI have a little bit of everything.â
âAbsolutely. I would love to.â Playing video games with family was something that Soraya had grown up doing and so she was happy to get back into it. âI am cool with anything for the most part...but Iâd prefer no FPS.â
