WIP Dionysus and Artemis & Apollo Concepts

I’m FINALLY making progress on my Dionysus portrait I originally sketched years ago.

Pentheus, the King of Thebes, was torn apart limb-from-limb (sparagmos) by his own mother, Agave, and her sisters in a Dionysian frenzy for defying the god Dionysus.

People asking why Artemis II matters, lemme tell you

1. First woman to enter deep space, Christina Koch, went as a mission specialist to help test the preventative measures against the radiation that causes cancer in the ships, and primarily affects women. It affects men too but less so. Christina's literally so inspiring to me.

2. This mission and further Artemis missions are testing safety concerns to help push the boundary of what we've been able to explore up to this point. Safety is the primary purpose of the trip. This is the first step to exploring Mars and further planets! Including Europa (my beloved.)

3. Before this, only 24 humans have ever entered deep space. Of that 24, 5 are alive today and they're all in their 90s. We very much needed a newer trip to help confirm or change whatever information we had from years and years ago. Having 4 living testaments of space exploration is a very important part of keeping said exploration alive.

4. Even though it wasn't the primary purpose of the trip, we've gotten so many rare pictures! Including my favorite "Hello, World" taken by commander Reid Wiseman:

It's the second photo EVER to have a fulll illuminated Earth hemisphere, the first being "Blue Marble". All other photos of the Earth have been spliced. Blue Marble was taken during the day and Hello, World was taken at night (the exposure has been lifted for clarity). It's my new favorite photo, it's so beautiful.

Here's what I've realized from the Artemis II mission:

You cannot study STEM without the arts, and you cannot study humanities without the sciences. In that tiny capsule we sent to the moon, we sent physicists who are also photographers. We sent poets who are pilots.

We sent experts on exact scientific maneuvers who also express precise emotion and experience that will be quoted for decades. They play with a stuffed moon in the background of a broadcast and have Chappell Roan as their wakeup music. They drove around the far side of the moon.

We sent parents, partners...We sent humans, who are unabashedly showing their humanity and brilliance and vulnerability. They are smart and kind and generous and ambitious and silly and thoughtful and so damn good at what they do. And they want to share it all with us.

I worship Aphrodite, Hermes and Apollo as a trio presiding over the queer community, but particularly Trans people.

Aphrodite is an aspect of Ishtar, who is explicitly credited with the ability to trans someone's gender and change their sex. Also she is a patron of love, all kinds of love, and all kinds of relationship. Platonic, self love, crushes, squishes, romantic and sexual feelings are sacred to her. She asks us to love and allow ourselves to be loved in turn. She also celebrates love of the self, which is the foundation of the transgender experience. To love yourself so much you work to create a life where you can be truly and completely yourself.

Hermes is a god of the in-between spaces, of journeys, messages and connection, as well as thieves, which shows that he is a protector of people who dont fit into mainstream society, and he presides over the work done to survive. Also, as a god of messages and communication, he is a patron of online comunity and the comradaree found there. He is also a patron of the non-binary or gender fluid spectrum, as the complex and flexible nature of the non-binary experience is much like a journey without a destination, a celebration of the road, of moving and following your own path.

Apollo is a patron of medicine, as well as the founding of new cities and city walls. This building is analogous to the building of the self, and the building of a life and community we can be truly proud of. He also celebrates the artistic side of the transgender experience, as the leader of the muses. The art produced by the queer comunity, that sacred inspiration, gives us solace, inspiration, joy, laughter, tears, a way to channel our pain and stress into something that uplifts others, that holds us and gives us comfort in a world that gives us precious little.

Together they are a trio that celebrates the beautiful parts of the transgender experience and the transition process, while loving and protecting the community that holds and shelters us.

I am so greatful for their presence in my life and in my heart, and I hope they can be a part of yours, too.
