I think I speak for Violet stans everywhere when I say that Xaden was in the right to withhold information of the revolution from Violet, but Violet was also in the right for breaking up with Xaden over it.

Violet thought she was dating a wingleader only to find out that he's also the leader of a revolution. Everything she thought was a fable was the truth, and everything she thought was the truth is a lie... and Xaden knew... and didn't tell her. Her entire world was turned upside down, and she was the only one in that entire group of people who didn't know. She's pissed, she's humiliated, she's hurt, she's confused. Xaden, unintentionally, made a fool out of her in front of everyone else. She's entitled to all of those emotions, and she's entitled to break up with Xaden until she can sort everything out.

Xaden was in the right to not tell Violet because it's not his secret to tell, lives are on the line, she's the General's daughter, she can't protect herself from an intinnsic quite yet. But this is also a major red flag for their relationship moving forward. Their relationship can't progress when Violet actively knows Xaden's withholding information from her, especially when she needs the full truth. It's one thing to be in a relationship with someone when you don't know they're withholding information from you; it's an entirely different matter to be in that relationship, knowing they're leading a revolution, knowing they're withholding information, wanting to be a part of it, and to actively have them stonewall you by not telling you what's going on. Violet broke up with Xaden not just for the here and now but for the future of their relationship.

Talking about Xaden's relationship with Violet does not reduce him to a mere "boy toy." Being a revolutionary leader and Violet's boyfriend actually adds a layer of complexity to his character that Violet antis love to ignore. What's good for the revolution isn't always what's good for a relationship, as evidenced in FW and IF. Xaden, being a revolutionary leader, does not give him permission to be a shitty boyfriend. Violet actually helps Xaden do both better. Not including the fact that Violet turned out to be absolutely vital to the revolution, which she couldn't have been if she hadn't broken up with Xaden and if he hadn't learned to tell her the whole truth.

After re-reading Fourth Wing, I genuinely think Liam and Violet were soulmates. I mean it in the most strictly platonic way possible, but they were soulmates.

The way he fit right in with her, the banter, the familiarity, the love they had for each other, the loyalty that went both ways from the get-go, the calmness he brought to her stormy thoughts, the way he was the reason Violet finally manifested her signet, how Violet risked everyone knowing about Andarna’s gift to save him, how he risked everything to save her, “it’s been my honor”, how she will forever love him, and him her, the fondness and bitterness you can feel whenever Violet so much as thinks of him… soulmatism 101.

I’m so glad we got to see such a beautiful bond form and remain, despite the circumstances. It’s so heartwarming to see a man and a woman love each other so fiercely in a non-romantic way.

As someone who's been married for almost a decade, I'll never understand the hatred that Violet receives in IF. I've seen her called immature, a toddler, someone who doesn't know what love is. Violet (and Xaden) spent all of IF putting in the necessary work to make their relationship successful. An "I love you" a day will not keep a relationship afloat. There has to be trust, and Violet's trust in Xaden was broken after FW. I understand why Xaden withheld the information of the revolution from her. She understands why. But it doesn't change the fact that her trust in him was broken, and Violet needs trust. She needs information to make a relationship work. Everyone has vital things that they require in a relationship, which is specific to the two people within that relationship. Violet needs the full truth, and she was very up-front with Xaden on that. She didn't force him into a relationship and then forced him to accommodate her standards. She was willing to let him go if he wasn't able to give her what she needed. Xaden chose to accommodate her needs because he found her more precious than his need to keep secrets. That was his choice. A woman should never be villianized for setting standards for her person.

And to say that Violet only loves conditionally or that she doesn't know what love is? If that were the case, then Violet would have broken up with Xaden as soon as he turned venin. She stayed with him and spent all of OS searching for a cure because she loved him unconditionally. Riorgail only survived OS because of the effort they put into their relationship in IF. And it was Violet who pushed them to put in that effort early on.

Saying that Violet should just accept Xaden's "I love you" without any questions is not the way to form a relationship that will last decades. Violet's in it for the long-term, not the short-term.

I'll never understand how a fandom full of women can criticize a woman for setting standards while simultaneously holding the man to no standards whatsoever.
