Thank You, Frontliners Dear Lord, Please continue to hold our frontliners' hands during this difficult time. Envelop them in your embrace during those times that they long to hug their families but they couldn't.

Raine Recommends: Ben&Ben â Limasawa Street
I just want to put it out there first that I am not proud of myself for being late to the party â like, I have missed out on a lot when it comes to this band. They have been around for a while now but I just learned about them about 6 months ago. Eek!Anyway, I decided to write this because my last album review was about Kris Allenâs 10th Year Anniversary CD that Iâm sure heâs worked so hard for,âŚ

Kris Allen, Kris Allen⌠donât know him? I donât blame you. You probably know his runner-up though⌠Adam Lambert? Does that ring a bell? Of course, it does!
Š The New York Times
Kris Allen won the 8th season of American Idol in 2009, the following year after David Cook did. Everybody didnât think he would win, but hey, even during the Top 36 elimination, he already had my heart after that Man in the Mirror performance (screw Kara DioGuardi). I also had the privilege to watch him perform live when he headlined a Music Festival here in the Philippines in 2010. I still have the ticket!
So a few days ago, Kris posted this on his Facebook page. Itâs a video talking about his 10 album: A collection of songs from his previous albums. In this video, he talked about how hard the whole process was:
So imagine my disappointment when I woke up accidentally at 3:30 AM, couldnât get back to sleep, and I decided to listen to it. I saw his announcement + link on Facebook beforehand, it says:
â10â IS OUT NOW!
Iâve never been one to look back. Looking back has never made sense to me. Things happen and then you move on to the next. At least thatâs the way I have always seen it. Iâm an artist and the next thing is always supposed to be the best thing, right? But then the number 10 came up. 10 years since the audition. 10 years since I was on American Idol. 10 years since my very 1st album release. It started to really hit me. I have been on this journey for a while now and felt like I needed to take a second and look back. Not to relive some sort of glory days, but to realize what has happened over this period of time.
Thatâs what â10â is. A look back over the last 10 years. Not just the songs, but all of it. The experiences. The people. The joy. The heartbreak. The laughter. The changes. And in that looking back I felt real gratitude for the time that I have had in the music industry. I wanted to express that feeling through giving these songs some new attention. Breathing new life into them. Breathing 10 years of a gratefulness into them. I hope you enjoy â10â and thank you from the bottom of my heart for being a part of my storyâŚ.so far.
So I streamed it on Spotify and I was faced with a full album of echo-ey and stripped down versions of his so-so songs. He could have gone with Better With You, Leave You Alone, The Vision of Love, Young Love, In Time, Parachute â I could name 10 of his better songs than the ones included in that album, and HECK â MY BLOG NAME IS BASED ENTIRELY ON ONE OF HIS SONGS: Rooftops! ⍠Screaming from the rooftops all over the world now. âŤÂ Of course, I gave it the benefit of the doubt because I just woke up and my hearing was still probably fuzzy or something because of my hay fever. I pulled up my laptop and went straight to Spotify and yes, I was right the first time. Acoustic and echo-ey. âEchoustic,â if you may â hey Urban Dictionary!
Listen to 10 here: SmartURL.it/krisallen10Â
Dear Kris Allen,
I love you. I would still watch your live show if you come back to Manila, and still cheer you on as you sip that balut soup, but you gotta step away from this acoustic thing youâre doing and step out of your comfort zone.
I was actually expecting a more complex set up, a la Boyce Avenue or Sheppard when I heard that youâre coming out with this compilation album. You have a big group of talented musicians backing you up â do me a favor and listen to this 9-member band called Ben&Ben. Youâll figure out the reason why.
My Love for You: 12/10 Stars My rating for 10: 6/10 Stars
PS, To Kris Allenâs very passionate fans, I am one of you, hence this very honest review. This is entirely based on my almost-4 AM opinion and does not intend to attack anyone especially Kris. So please be kind and donât leave rude comments.
Do me a favor and also listen to Ben&Ben after you listen to 10.
Kris Allen â 10 (Ten Years, the Album) Kris Allen, Kris Allen... don't know him? I don't blame you. You probably know his runner-up though...
On the last Saturday of August, I decided to drag one of my bestfriends Shai to BGC as early as 8 AM. Why too early? Well, I was invited to attend a 10-AM event and because weâre from the east side, it will take us two hours to drive there!
The event is Winnie Wongâs channel, Penelope Popâs 2nd YouTube Anniversary and Havaianas is throwing her a âshopping party,â complete with the event-exclusive 20% discount on all regular-priced items!
As soon as we got there, we were given the itinerary by the lovely people of Homeroom Creatives and we were allowed to get inside and start pinning with Winnie. I was fortunate enough to be one of the five VIPs who received a free pair of the Havaianas Rio flipflops from Winnie!
I was given two free pins along with my Rio and I made Winnie pick the second pin for me. I also made Shai design the paper bag that Iâll keep the Rio in. We were assisted all along by the lovely store manager while Patrick Soriano (Winnieâs boyfriend)Â â yes, the Sorianos in the media industry â made sure heâs got everything covered.
While the event was in full swing, we were also treated to some snacks from Pablo, and the multi-colored bev they specifically made for the event was super refreshing, I think I had two!
The store was closed to accommodate Winnieâs guests and she has been super lovely and down-to-earth. The intimate set-up of just 15 people allowed her to interact with everyone and really engage in a conversation. What a real sweet soul!
Overall, it was a really great experience and it was also Shaiâs first time to attend an influencerâs exclusive event and Iâm glad that she enjoyed it as well.
We capped off the morning with a bit of Baskinâ Robbins before heading home â something cool for the two-hour drive!
Congratulations on your 2nd YouTube Anniversary, Winnie! Hope this is just the beginning and we see more from you in the coming years!
Hey you, whoâs reading this⌠whoâs your favorite local YouTube personality?
Penelope Pop x Havaianas Event On the last Saturday of August, I decided to drag one of my bestfriends Shai to BGC as early as 8 AM.
I remember being 9 years old (early 1999?) sitting at the back of my parentsâ customized owner-type jeep (the one decked out with top of the line surround sound system) and it was a short night drive from my grandparents house to ours and the radio was on. It was the first time that I heard Swear It Again.
When they announced that MANILA is included in the Asian leg of the TWENTY TOUR, I literally screamed and ugly-cried in front of my motherâŚ
It was the beginning of the boyband era, and I remember thinking to myself⌠is this the Backstreet Boys? But they sound different, the lyrics are clearer, at ang lamig ng boses! Then after the song, the DJ confirmed my initial suspicion that theyâre not the Backstreet Boys by announcing that theyâre Westlife.
Just like that, I knew I was SO ready to enter my very first fandom!
After that night, it was like a chain reaction. My classmates have started talking about them in the same breath as the Backstreet Boys and Boyzone. They talk about how Westlife is being co-managed by a Boyzone member (which is true â Ronan Keating used to co-manage them with Louis Walsh). Then we started hanging out a lot at my classmate Micoâs place because he has Westlifeâs cassette tapes and we ended up knowing most of the songs before they even release them like Flying Without Wings and Fool Again to name a few.
Fast forward to 4 marriages, 14 number one singles, 18-20 albums between all the members, 1 band member leaving, 1 major breakup announcement and a 7-year hiatus, no one saw the 20th year anniversary reunion coming. Yeah, of course, as a true Westlife fan, we have always prayed that theyâre gonna get back together again, so when they announced that they were indeed coming back, I almost fell off my seat!
When they announced that MANILA is included in the Asian leg of the TWENTY TOUR, I literally screamed and ugly-cried in front of my mother⌠yes, all of this thirty-year-old grown ass woman that I am. (OK my eyes are welling up again at the memory!)
The show is in July but the tickets were sold in March. They were sold out right away so they added a second show. I may not have had the best seat in the house but man, did I have the best night of my life! I think I cried five times. It was a night filled with beautiful memories and it took me down on a journey to the past twenty years of good music!
Hereâs the Manila concert setlist in case you missed the best night of 2019 or if you have post-concert depression and just want to relive every moment:

On 10th of July this year, I turned the big three-oh!
I was so busy the whole time and everyone was equally busy that we celebrated it on the 28th. Yup. More than two weeks after my actual birthday. But everyone was there!
It was a no-fuss low-key celebration with my closest friends and family at a private roofdeck infinity pool a good fifteen-minute drive away from home.
I sent out two types on invites thru email â the first one reads 5:30 (for the fam) and the other one reads 6:00 for the regular guests.
Aura with the new nude lippy!
Everyone seemed to have fun.
Below is a photo I took before we kicked off the night and a photo I took halfway through⌠and to be honest, we donât want to show any photo of the after⌠none of us could even remember it too! Heh!
I couldnât have asked for better company on my 30th birthday than this bunch. The venue though â we loved it so much!

Toot Fairy Bathroom &Â Beyond
If you notice that your daily coffee ritual is often accompanied by a timely bowel movement, youâre not alone. For some people this can be an inconvenience, but for others, coffee can be one way of keeping regular. Some coffee drinkers will readily feel this gastrointestinal effect, some less so. I am one of those people who run to the bathroom four minutes after my first coffee of the day. ThatâŚ

It all started when I came home from work one day, extremely stressed out with the dayâs activities, worsen by the traffic on the way home. If my memory serves me right, it was the day that I stayed in my managerâs office for most of my shift, strategizing and action-planning for the whole month ahead.
I showered and went to bed⌠or that was the initial plan. I ended up tossing and turning and I just could not sleep. I needed to do something that would take my mind off of things â something therapeutic. Something I love, like baking. Letâs just say I got carried away and ended up baking two batches of my favorite ooey-gooey dark chocolate fudge brownies instead of just one.
I brought some leftovers at work the following day and I did not expect the reaction / feedback from everyone who got to try it. They encouraged and pushed me to make moolah out of it! To cut to the chase, when push came to shove, I set up my very own online dessert store on Instagram. I sold everything from cupcakes and cookies, and of course, to my best-seller, brownies!
Even my momâs dog, DJ, could not resist them! Heâs always happy to lend a helping paw at my packaging line! But my business was short-lived, because I was and still am too busy with my day job and I am still in love with what I do. So Iâll just share with you my recipe so you can make it in the comfort of your own kitchen!
Growing up, my aunt, Tita Jeannette used to bring me brownies from The French Baker as pasalubong when she came home from work. Theyâre still my favorite up to this day! So I made it a point that my brownies should at least be up to par with The French Bakerâs.
I also love giving out edible gifts, so whenever thereâs an unexpected occasion or get-together, Iâm always ready with my made-with-love brownies!
Ingredients: 1 cup butter (2 sticks) 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 4 medium-sized eggs 3/4 cup dutch-processed cocoa powder (my brand of choice is Hersheyâs Special Dark Cocoa) 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped nuts (my personal choice is roasted cashews, in true The French Baker fashion) 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips or little dark chocolate shards 1 20g sachet of Nescafe Blend & Brew Original (Surprised?! Hahaha! This is the no-longer-secret ingredient.)
Directions:
*Preheat oven to 200C and grease-and-line a 7x11x2 inch rectangular pan.
Sift flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and coffee powder mix into a bowl. Set aside.
Melt butter over a bain-marie, stir in sugar until well-incorporated. Remove from heat.
In the butter and sugar mixture, whisk in the eggs one at a time, until pale and almost frothy. Add vanilla extract.
Fold in the dry ingredients and add half of the nuts and half of the chocolate chips/shards.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, rotating halfway through. On the last 5 minutes of baking, scatter remaining nuts and chocolate chips/shards on top and put it back in the oven.
Take it out of the oven when the middle is still a bit jiggly and a skewer inserted does not come out clean. Leave it to rest and the residual heat will continue to cook the middle. Itâs an important step to achieve the gooeyness of the brownies!!!
Let it come up to room temperature before refrigerating. Chill for at least an hour before slicing. Keep refrigerated and it can last you up to a week⌠but I doubt it will last a week! My family can devour this in less than two days!
So there you have it! I bake when life stresses me out⌠Whatâs your favorite thing to do when stress begins to loom above your head?
Sharing the recipe for my Ooey-Gooey Dark Chocolate Fudge Brownies!! It all started when I came home from work one day, extremely stressed out with the day's activities, worsen by the traffic on the way home.
Exactly a year ago today, I was promoted as an Operations Supervisor, or most commonly known in the BPO industry as a Team Leader. As I mentioned in one of my blog entries, you have to have acquired at least three to five years of experience before you get to be in my post. In my case, it only took me less than two years. Iâm not flexing my ego here and saying how good I am â itâs just one of those âwhen luck and preparation meets opportunityâ moments.
Leading a team for the first time can be daunting. To add to that, I was part of the team of 1-manager-and-6-leaders who launched the brand-spankinâ new line of business in the company. To be honest, I had no idea how my heart was able to take it all in. Thereâs no bedrock of personal experience to build on.
âIf youâre a first-time team leader then youâre probably either relishing the challenge or considering running for the doorâor a bit of both.â â Liquid Planner
Here are the things I have learned during my first year in the role â the good, the bad, and the ugly. I hope these can help you establish and maintain a productive team while developing your leadership skills along the way. I, myself, still have a LOT to learn⌠so letâs journey through this together!
1. Completely embody the role.
As a team leader you need to be visible to the team and available to support them. Yes, we have our fair share of admin tasks and then there is the real-time schedule adherence and conformance that we need to monitor which require us to be in front of our computers all the time. But to be an effective team leader, you need to invest in the role â engage with your team members, walk the floor and help them out.
2. Get to know your team members.
Yes, get to know your team members individually. Find out what makes them tick. Ask them about their short term and long term goals. Ask them about their families, their pets, even their commute to work that day. Getting to know who youâre working with is the first all-important step to bonding with the team and establishing their respect and trust. The old adage of listening twice as much as you speak still holds true.
3. Communicate with everyone.
a. Communicate with your team. Once your team is up and running, itâs imperative to keep the communication going to build relationships, assess progress, and identify risks and issues. Plus, youâll get more engagement from team members if they see you investing time in them and showing interest in their activities. Make expectations and responsibilities clear so that everyone knows whoâs doing what, why and by when. This seems obvious but donât assume everyone has your detailed understanding of the project at hand. Encourage and embrace new ideas.
b. Communicate with your manager. Your manager is your mentor. Especially for a newbie, you have to imagine yourself like a piece of sponge soaking up all the ideas and tips that your manager is bringing to the table. Schedule and one-on-one session, may it be about your numbers or may it be just to run an idea by them. Book a coaching triad session so your manager can give you direct and real-time feedback on how youâre doing and give you tips on how to improve.
c. Communicate with your co-leaders. Most of the time, youâre working with people leaders who have years and years of experience. Ask them for tips; give them hypothetical scenarios and ask their opinion about them. Observe how they coach their team members, observe how they engage with them and observe how their team members perceive them, too.
d. Communicate with HR. You have to make sure that whatever you do and whatever your team members do, you abide by and comply to the company policies. Your HR partners will be able to guide you accordingly.
4. Be the role model.
As a team leader, you have to lead by example. May it be as simple as dressing appropriately and not slouching at your desk to a more tedious task, like taking in phone calls as a frontliner to show them that youâre executing your action plan for the week. Think about the behaviors you want and expect from your team members and be sure to exhibit those traits yourself. Youâre the role model, so what you say and do will impact the teamâs daily work habits and attitudes.
5. Give direction then let go.
Once you get to know your team members individually, youâll be able to gage them on their strengths and weaknesses and know what communication style works best for them. You have to be crystal clear about your goals and let every single one of them scratch and claw to reach those goals in their own way. Make everyone accountable and donât forget to give credit to the team once the goals have been met and exceeded.
6. Reprimand in private; Reward in public.
Be quick to recognize a good performance and reward it where appropriate. A little bit of verbal praise goes a long way in showing your team you are both aware of and appreciative of their achievements. It also doesnât hurt to give them gifts straight out of your pocket sometimes â movie tickets for two, gift certificates, snack packs, etc.
Be equally as timely in tackling poor performance issues. The longer you leave them, the tougher theyâll be to fix. Look for the best in people and understand that mistakes will happen. Behavioral issues sometimes need to be tackled elsewhere â step out of the building where your team member doesnât feel intimidated by the office set up and talk to them, peer-to-peer.
  7. Be proactive; Ask questions.
Just because your new does not mean you do not have anything to bring to the table. Youâll be surprised to know that there are things that the tenured leaders can pick up from you. Donât hesitate to share what you know. That said, donât be afraid of seeking help (itâs a sign of strength, not weakness). Team management is an ongoing learning process and you will never have all the answers.
8. You will make mistakes.
You will struggle in time management. You will forget to upload your coaching logs in the portal on time, not just once but twice. Youâll miss a lot of deadline. Youâll work extra unpaid hours to compensate on that. But I promise you, you will learn from it.
9. Firing someone for the first time.
Nothing puts a knot in my stomach like having to fire someone. Even when the employee deserves it, taking someoneâs job away is among the hardest tasks any leader has to do. If youâre not comfortable in doing it on your own, ask your manager to come sit with you and help you out. I had a one-on-one talk with my manager prior to me delivering the termination paper to one of my team members. I told him what I was planning to say, he just smoothed it out around the edges and weâre good to go. He sat with me through the whole ordeal and did not leave my side until the employee was escorted out of the building.
10. Just have fun!
Team leadership is often challenging but also rewarding. You have your own little family in the workplace. Once youâre invested in them, youâll definitely gain their trust and loyalty in return. They will always have your back. Leading up a team thatâs working well and delivering results is a great feeling, so go and strive for it! I do so everyday.

Motivation Monday: Tidy Up!
Today, I have the whole day off! Since my schedule changes every three weeks, I donât need to get ready for work until 2:00 AM tomorrow (I know, right!), and to a lot of people, that seems mind-blowing but, I LOOOVE that schedule. Iâll take that any day instead of scrambling to get ready every night at 8:00 PM.
Having said that, I figured I should tidy up my room. Dust it from top to bottom,âŚ
