Review #2
Capturing the Devil (Stalking Jack the Ripper, #4) by Kerri Maniscalco
Boy oh boy… What a complete mess.
I’d like to start by saying that I was in love with the first two books. It was peak entertainment just to my taste: intricate mystery, snappy action, beautiful writing, lovable characters and a little bit of spicy romance. Third book – a bit meh (that love triangle especially), but still enjoyable.
What the hell happened here? Finale, that was supposed to go out with the bang, did not deliver at all. Characters turned on their heads into caricatures of themselves, romance dominating the book entirely (don’t get me wrong, I love Thomas and Audrey Rose just as any other gal, but the amount of fan-service was over the top). Also plot? What plot? This time even the period details and apparent amount of research done on the topic did not shine through, the mystery that was going on was so secondary I earned to skip through it entirely and all the tension was solved in such a deus-ex-machina kind of way that did not make a slightest bit of sense. I can’t help but to feel sorry, for the wasted potential that these books had.
Picture: Some bloody symbolism for our lovely Audrey Rose
