Welcome! I'm Mari, an animal artist and huge World of Cars enthusiast & horse nerd. I'm also an Avgeek! Will post some artworks related to that here π 17 | she/her | BR π§π·
πI'm a teenager artist and I'll be posting stuff related to World of Cars. I really love the franchise since I was a baby. I have an AU in which they're horses/animals!
πIf you wish to see my main art, I have an instagram! @Spirit.ofthewind for main and @sotw.planes for woc only
(in order: chick and lightning, chick, lightning, and mack)
+a warmup:
there are so many fake horse 'images' on google that ive had to go back to my old deviantart stock libraries to find reliable sources. none of these drawings are directly referenced off of any particular photo, but i did go back and double check the anatomy in some places based on real references. other places... yeah i've got to keep re-familiarizing myself with drawing horses, lol.
so. i was not happy with the 3D models of horses on offer in the CSP store or literally anywhere else i could find them, i needed one to use for my work, and i went ahead and made my own that is now available for the low low price of FREE in the CSP assets store.
textures included are greyscale basic shapes, multicolor basic shapes, and white with no shapes (but eyes, mouth, nostrils, and hooves emphasized for ease).
shape is ROUGHLY based off the silhouette of an Andalusian. size-wise, it by default stands at around 16 hands, but of course it can be resized to suit your needs. for that, I recommend sizing a human pose doll to the correct height (in centimeters), lining them up on the same plane, and resizing the horse to match the human doll's height. remember that a horse's height is measured at the shoulders!
it also comes with the following preset poses:
if you use CSP and wanna snag it, type 2204263 into the search bar in the CSP assets store. happy horsing!
ok posting the project ive been working on: a revamp of the horse cars AU i had when i was a kid. its going here, on my main blog, because i might just change the names and make it Original Characters. it has very little to do with Cars anymore.
my original cars horse au was about thoroughbred horse racing, and i have very few surviving drawings:
yes, that says 2009.
Lightning was a blood bay thoroughbred, Mater was a liver chestnut irish draught cross. (and theres frank, a roan piebald shorthorn).
the story was based around horse racing and some of the characters were human. i also recall i made chick hicks an all-black thoroughbred.
several people are posting their own horse au's recently on tumblr, and combined with the fact that i watched A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as it aired... left me Inspired. :)
so here's my revamped 'cars horse au', 17 years later (oh my god??)
and now, it's set in a vaguely euro-medieval time period (inspired by AKOTSK/the general ASOAIF universe)
So my new, revamped Lightning is... A warhorse :3
Lightning is a homebred crossbreed: part destrier, part iberian, part draught, this striking blood-bay stallion is the ultimate-all rounder mount. Sure-footed with a barrel chest suited for a yoke or warsaddle and a shockingly long stride for his build, this muscular and deft warhorse will see you remain not only alive by battles-end but astride and unharmed. Standing at 16.2h, Lightning can charge into battle fully armored with his knight at the reins.
He retains his original 4 stockings, rich bay coloring, and bolt-shaped blaze.
Lightning joins the RS herd after some mishap, and his rider Roger allies with Lady Flo.
After many adventures, Lightning grows scarred in his old age, and once he goes lame, gets fat as well.
Lightning is injured in his maturity, which leaves him lame and unable to fully gallop ever again. He is retired to pasture in his late prime age. But that doesnt stop him from getting into further trouble, when he meets a young holsteiner named Cruz, with dreams of riding for the kingsguard...
Together, they enter a competition together to prove themselves: Lightning to his knight that he's healed from his wounds- and Cruz to find her own knight...
Lightning's rider/knight/caretaker/master is my OC Roger. Picture steely pate from AKOTSK.
Toying with the idea of Rusty and Dusty or Harv having been the merchants that sold Lightning to Roger?
Roger is perhaps a low level lord, but after his repeated victories astride his warhorse, he becomes a bit of a war hero and gains new lands and titles, alongside his ally and fellow knight Lady Flo of Radiator Springs.

this post is gonna get long so i'll add a cut, but here are more character designs:
Doc. 18h percheron stallion. Rumor has it he's the ex-mount of King Texas Dinoco himself.
Doc was all-black in his youth. Now, he's greyed out, and the lead stallion of the radiator springs herd on Lady Flo's lands. Lady Flo keeps a number of old, retired horses.
Sally is a 16.2h freisan ex-warhorse. Injured grievously by a spear in battle, she escaped her poor treatment in a kingdom far-away, and was rescued and nursed back to health by Lady Flo and her royal-painter husband Ramone. Flo is the only rider Sally permits in her newfound freedom.
Sally lives the rest of her days peacefully as the matriarch of the radiator springs herd. (well... perhaps trouble Does find her... when her old kingdom comes looking... hehe...)
She has a brand on her hindquarter based on the Porsche logo.
Note: realistic herd dynamics apply. She has at least one foal by Doc, and several by Lightning after he joins the herd. Lightning defers to Doc and is the satellite stallion for several years until Doc's death, but Sally only allows Lightning to breed her in this time. Doc and Lightning are the only two studs in this herd, and Sally the only mare, until Cruz shows up.
Chick is a 16h knabstrupper stallion. His long legs and speed makes him one of the swiftest and surest messenger horses in the land.
He and Lightning are rivals at first, but in their old age grow to be allies and good friends. Vitriolic, but quite fond.
Mack is a massive 18h suffolk punch gelding (or the world's most nonchalant stallion). He's a warhorse in the sense that he's the guy hauling those massive supply carts and keeping everyone fed and armored.
Mack was born on the same small farm as Lightning, and they are likely distantly related. Mack and Lightning are buddy-bonded. Mack is always calm and unshakable; and Lightning is a high-spirited stud. Where Lightning goes, Mack must follow.
Sheriff is an old swaybacked tobiano Shire gelding. This is not his final design. He's around 17-18h.
Cruz is a champagne dun holsteiner mare, standing about 16.3h.
Her story is explained above.
The competition ends with Lightning having to forfeit due to his injury. Cruz goes on to win and catch the attention of King Texas Dinoco, and becomes one of the royal horses working at the castle. Her adventures continue from there, but she has a year off first to foal out a colt from Lightning lol.
Other characters not yet drawn include a number of humans and horses. Strip is an arabian (nicknamed 'the king [of horses]' due to the fact that he's the king's royal mount). Jackson is another rival stallion. Mater remains as i designed him in 2009: a liver chestnut irish draught cross gelding.
Flo's armor is all-chrome. Luigi and Guido are likely farriers. Lizzie might be human as well. Or a werewolf or Something.
Finally, here are some bonus drawings:
Sally with one of her foals by Lightning
aprox height chart i started. template by seahaze on devianart.
ok i think that's most of it? ill update under the cut if i forgot anything. ive had so much fun this month making this new "au". (its basically original characters yeah). hoping to draw more!!!
a lot of the breed and coat pattern ideas are from @nonsensicallycereal !! banger ideas ilu
I love seeing more Cars horse Au's!! Your story is so incredibly unique i love it
May I ask out of curiosity? (Your post ain't commentable so I'm doing this here) Are your horses humanized like mine (They talk and behave mostly like people) or they're like rl, with instinctive behaviors? I'm curious =D

I drew him in a shirt too because I think I'm gonna give the pony PPAA firefighter uniforms tbh
I made him a KWPN and Clydesdale cross, and I really like how he looks, powerful and fluffy but still with some grace of that Dutch Warmblood in his head and neck. His wings are actually pretty nice too, they're sort of simplified bird wings. And he's a splash, to mimic his paint job. Overall, I genuinely really like this design and I had a lot of fun drawing him.
I still don't know how much I like his cutie mark idea tho. Like, I enjoy the way it looks, I like how it's more geometric, but idk how loyalty can be someone's talent. But maybe that could be actually fun. Maybe young him thought it's lame, and now he appreciates it. Who knows.
I don't have any elaborate lore for him, or anyone in this "AU" for that matter (not yet at least π), I'm just being silly and drawing ponies. I totally didn't hyperfocus on this drawing for four hours straight, no, no.
-Those fanfics I'j writing are for my own exclusive HORSE AU, NOT for the Actual Pixar Cars characters; many things works differently in my original Cars headcanons. I have sepp HCs/stories for those ππ
Doc was the colt of a thoroughbred racing sire and a common quarter horse dam, making him an appendix quarter horse. His sire is black and his dam is blue roan. Doc horse himself is blue roan
His dad/sire, a thoroughbred racer, left his wife as soon as they found out they were gonna have a baby because he didn't want to take care of a crossbred. He wanted a pure thoroughbred as his inheritor. So he saw Doc as useless.
His birth name was/is "Blue".
As he grew up, he got interested by races and really wanted to become one. His mom wouldn't support that bc the trauma she had with her ex who's a racer. She would say It wouldn't work because he was a cross thoroughbred, not a pure one.
But she was more than wrong..!
When he turned 4, he joined his first Pegasus cup race, winning.
Same with his other 2 next cups
But yknow what happened on his fourth cup... the accident. The worst accident in a derby, ever!
He pushed himself too deeply, and feel really hard, at full speed, making him break his front right cannon leg bone-most important bone on a horse.
He could survive, but with a very limited life. Everything got harder for him, merely walking was extremely difficult. He couldn't feed himself properly, and such
So, obviously, he couldn't get back into racing. Unlike the original Doc Hudson, who's a car and could be properly fixed, there was absolutely no way that horse Doc could go back. He had to mandatorely retire for healthy reasons. He couldn't even walk properly, imagine racing!
And yknow... that broke his heart deeply. Racing was his biggest happiness, as his family situation wasn't so good, with his kinda mean mom and left-for-milk dad..
He moved from his hometown... to forget all these traumatic racing memories. But he was weak.
There was some point he almost died from malnourishon, until he was rescued by a humble herd of horses- the Radiator Springs folks!
They welcomed him in the city, and as he was sick they took good care of him.
He was starting to recover, with the care he got, but his life was really blue from all the memories..
I don't know whether to make him a doctor or nah... it' hard to tuck that in because I simply don't know where. If he was really weak, how could he work in any way? Ye..
I hope you like it πππππ enjoy the pics
