oh sigurd, we're really in it now.
mission board: aphotic | flying +1/search for the captain | chrom + sigurd
There would always come times in a military commanderâs career where he would need to assess a losing situation and to find the best made of it - whether that be logistically, or through numbers or inclement circumstances, or any number of things that any mortal man could not control.
Sigurd very rarely found himself in those situations, and yet when he looked at the vibrant young man that Chrom had been and saw the loose hang of his body over his injury, punctuated by the sharp spike of pain from his own, he had to wonder if this was something like it.
âWell enough,â he replied. It wasnât a lie. He would be fine.
Cocking his head, he dipped at the hip to meet Chromâs eyes. âIâm grateful that we have this island, wherever we happen to be, for some refuge, but Iâm afraid I donât know the geography well enough to know precisely where we are. I have not seen hide nor hair of our mounts, nor, less fortunately, our attackers.â
If the mounts had fled in fear and returned to the monastery, that would be one thing, and would be the best of the bad outcomes - once they dispatched of their assailants, they could simply return via their vessel, and call the day a success.
But they had to get there first.
âIs it broken? We will need to find you a shelter, then. Let us get you to somewhere safe, and then I will venture into the jungle and see if I can find our way out.â
There was a mix of good and bad news, though for two men who found themselves victims of a sudden crash, things were as good as they could be. Chrom was relieved to see that his comrade was as well as he could be, but felt a disturbance in his heart upon reminder that their mounts were nowhere to be seen. That could spell bad news, they were their otherwise best means of escape.Â
Still though, âat least weâre safe from our attackers for now.â That was the best silver lining anyone could ask for. Especially as the adrenaline slowly dimmed, and pain steadily began to replace the embers.Â
âI do not believe anything is broken⌠But I canât say for certain.â That was being generous, and he doesnât even try to hide it behind a laugh. Yet Chromâs eyes widened at Sigurdâs suggestion; âthough, even if it were, I couldnât let you meander off into the jungle alone!â If neither Sigurd nor Chrom knew a even a lick of their whereabouts, to venture off alone would be nothing short of suicide. He tries to stand back up again, but struggles to do so, just shy of shouting in pain the moment any weight is put on his right leg.
âBlast it allâŚ! Ergh, I agree that we should find shelter, any sort of base of operations would be good given our circumstances⌠but neither one of us should go about finding escape on our lonesome, Sigurd!â
oh sigurd, we're really in it now.
mission board: aphotic | flying +1/search for the captain | chrom + sigurd
He was not used to this level of pain. In point of fact, Sigurd rarely experienced physical pain - certainly little enough from battle, a few knicks and scrapes here and there, but rarely something to send him seeking the medics. If he sent his mind back, he could remember merely one other time, and the culprit having been the same source, but in a different location.
That is to say, Sigurd knew that he had broken his collarbone before even waking. Or rather, he knew that it was the cause of his waking, the bright hot point of pain that radiated from his neck down into his chest and into the tips of each and every single one of his fingers, something that shocked him enough to gasp.
âAhâŚ?â
The sun beat down on him, the roar of the surf vibrating the air so violently that he might have thought that he was still crashing down into the waves, and he jerked upright from the sensation of falling, hissing from displacement of his injury and the realization that he was, relatively speaking, safe.
âChrom!â It was less a call of seeking, and more of remembrance, that he had not come here alone, before he pushed himself to his feet, hissing once more against the wiggle of his arm useless against his side until he pulled it up to cradle.
âChrom!â The repetition was in search of his companion, more concern as he shuffled through the dense surf and sand, squinting against the harsh sand in the hopes that of the two of them, able-bodied men and warriors alike, at least one had the favor of the gods to find one another before their pursuers did.
It takes a few more moments of ceaseless wandering, before Chrom is able to hear a call of his name. He shifts, unable to turn as quickly as heâd like, the pain he hadnât yet fully processed finally settling in. âSigurd!â He calls out, voice louder than he had expected it to be, before steadily (though, it was as hastily as he could afford to be at the moment) making his way to the source.
It takes a few more moments of labored movement, until he is able to spot a familiar head of blue. A sense of relief washes over Chrom, coming out in a simple breath, as his hands find themselves to his knees.
âItâs a⌠relief to see you⌠wellâŚâ he says, still catching his breath. Speaking was a labored process at the moment, though it was a necessary one; something Chrom wishes he could have been prepared for. Though, how would he have expected to crash land so harshly when undertaking this operation.Â
Chrom spends a few more moments to orient himself, and as his breaths steadied, pain overtook his body. It wasnât so overwhelming to bring Chrom to his knees, but it was enough for him to understand that movement without proper aid would be difficult. He takes a cursory look, trying to find a stick to lean against. Though in his glance, none seem to be adequate enough for his weight. Sighing, he simply surrenders to the ground for a moment.
Another breath, before speaking; âhave you any clue where we are? Or⌠have you spotted any of our assailants? Apologies if youâve just⌠gathered yourself as well.â
Have You Ever Wanted to Hit Someone Really Really Hard But WAY Over There || Claude & Chrom
Mission: Any Skill +1 || @soulsaligned || Mission Season: Epidemic
Okay, heck. He kinda expected to get the sword knocked out of his hand, not to immediately make close acquaintance with the dirt covering the training field!
... Is Prof actually this good, or is Claude actually way over his head? A question that feels worth considering with high urgency as he picks himself back up. He looks back to Chrom, taking care to immediately mask that moment of panicky uncertainty behind a cheeky grin.
He does not move again immediately, however, taking all the advice carefully to heart as his hand re-evaluates the weight and shape of the blade it's holding to feel more confident with it.
"That does make sense," he notes. "There's a correct move, and then there's an obvious move... And then, there's unnecessary rushing."
Makes sense, indeed. It's alright, he reminds himself.
He's safe where he is now. He can make mistakes while training without having to fear ridicule from all around him. Or death, for that matter.
The thought prompts his smile to grow a shade warmer. "Let's try this again, then," he declares, flicking the blade one more time in his wrist, fixing his grip; he then charges again, aiming purposely for one of the slightly less obvious openings - only to abruptly switch the direction of his movements just as Chrom begins to move and target the other side, also left exposed.
When Claude grins upon standing, Chrom offers a similar grin in turn; it wasnât chiding, rather his own grin was simply one of acknowledgement. And, when Claude seems to adjust the blade in hand, Chrom does the same in turn, though he never leaves his stance.Â
âExactly.â Chrom offers reinforcement to Claudeâs conclusion. As such, he dons a new grin, one of obvious satisfaction, appreciative that his teachings seemed to bear some fruit. âYou learn well, a good quality, especially in a leader.â After all, Chrom knew in teaching a House Leader, there were far greater lessons to pass on other than just bladework.Â
Then, taking Claudeâs assertion as something of a warning, Chrom sucks in a breath, bracing himself. First, thereâs expectation for Claude to move somewhat obviously, and he isnât surprised to see him go for the more closed off of Chromâs openings. Then, heâs pleasantly surprised, watching the young leader go for a feint; Chromâs blade just meets against Claudeâs, his reflexes catching him just in the knick of time.
In clashing, Chromâs grin widens as he grows more impressed. âGood, you have a lot of strength behind your strike. That wouldâve hurt, had it connected.â Chrom laughs in response to his own honesty.
âNow, how do you handle a counterattack?â With a hastened breath, Chrom pushes Claude back, in turn going for a swing against him, interested to see how he responds in kind.Â
savior complex? i actually think it's rather simple.
mission board: anniversary | faith +1 | chrom and dorothea save a lady... together!
maidens with healing tears sounded like a plot stripped straight out of a fairytaleâa notion so gut-wrenchingly beautiful and ghastly all in one. for as marvelous as it'd be in theoryâto cure the worst of diseases, to usher life back into the world like a trail of baby's breath following behind the footsteps of springâall things pure had a way of getting trampled. if it really existed, there was no possible way an ability like that wouldn't have already been exploited. news of such feats would've traveled far and wide across the continent, under hushed breath and exaggerated tales of wealthy patrons who owned magical girls and bartered their lives for a pretty penny.
alas.
dorothea simply shakes her head at his question, indicating that she's not heard of such a thing. but the suggestion chrom follows up with is worth something. she mulls it over silently as he voices his thoughts, her eyes trailing off his face to wander into the distance, and already marking various routes to take. "that's not a bad idea," she finally agrees. "there's bound to be a merchant who's heard of something. word travels faster than they do with their goods, so if anyone's heard anything, it'll be one of them."
it's a start, and dorothea brightens visibly at this. "professor, i know where we should start."
****** dismal as the weather pans out to be for this rendezvousâwhat with the sun blotted out overhead and cold gusts of wind picking up, carrying elderly mumblings about how creaking bones heralded rain to comeâit proves useful in corralling those of interest. small packs of merchants loiter the sidewalks here and there, packing up the last of their belongings to stash onto carts, while others make their way towards local inns and taverns to take shelter. by professor chrom's side, dorothea watches them all in a hawk-like fashion, following one person to the next to try and figure out who to approach first.
"what about him?" whispering to her companion, she subtly points out an older-looking man who's just boarded up a makeshift stall, watching as he tosses a tarp over the last of his crates. "the older ones are usually better connected. they've got entire networks at their disposal."
Chrom nods along, all but sighing in relief when Dorotheaâs expression brightens; it was a sign that he had made the right choice in asking for her assistance.Â
âUnderstood.â Chrom nods, more than ready to follow along. âLead the way, Dorothea.â
     â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â  đĄ â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â
The less than ideal weather causes Chrom to shield his face ever slightly, trying to avoid the wind as best as he could. He sighs, though quickly snaps to attention when Dorothea points out a potential person of interest. In turn, he nods in agreement. âGood call, and he might be more interested in the gifts these tears may offer, too. We can use that to our advantage.â He smiles, before turning back to the older merchant. âLetâs do this.â
Walking up to the older sort, Chrom offers a wave, to which he offers a smile in turn. He greets the two wanderers; âMy apologies, I had just finished closing things up if youâre interested in purchasing.â
Waving his hand, Chrom offers a cordial response in turn; âNo need, though I appreciate the offer. My friend and I are actually interested in information.â The older man raises an eyebrow, inviting Chrom to continue. âWe seek a woman, whose tears can heal any wound. As a warrior, Iâve a few scars that I would love to heal. And my friend here carries her own interests towards the matter.â Half truth, half lie, though it tasted poor on the tongue all the same.Â
Taking interest, the older merchant leans in closer; his voice drops, a whisper, indicative of this being far grander a secret than previously expected.Â
And thus, far more harrowing a situation; âOho? And what are you two willing to pay for such informationâŚ?â
cats, meet my dad
herald mission board. lucina & chrom.
" Where do you think you're going? " Her voice is surprisingly soft and gentle, yet also keeps a tinge of sternness as she scolds the feline. Reaching down to scoop it into her arms, the cat's attempt to flee once the door opens is ruined by Lucina herself.
Stepping inside the righteously self-dubbed cat-cafĂŠ, she places the cat back onto the wooden floor once the door closes behind her â the cat scattering away, soon lost and hidden among countless other cats. The establishment was booming with felines and customers alike, a sight unlike any she's seen: seems like many of the students got allured by the premise of a cafĂŠ filled with cats.
Lucina is lucky enough to spot an empty table and take a seat, though as soon as she sits down she spots the table is already claimed by one of the four-legged residents: lazily stretching out and entirely ignoring her presence. Regardless, the kitten doesn't seem to mind her presence and so, she has no need to try and find another spot. Isn't she lucky?
" Anything I can fetch you? " A waitress asks, preventing Lucina from reaching out to attempt and pet the cat. " A sweet-apple tea blend, please ", Lucina replies. A nod of the waitress as she walks away, allowing Lucina to focus back on the cat before her: lightly wiggling a single digit to get its attention. A paw reaches out, lightly but playfully swatting at her finger. // @soulsaligned
Chrom had been encouraged to take a break.Â
He wasnât against it; frankly with how much time he spent preparing upcoming lessons admittedly left Chrom in far more of a state of lethargy than he expected; it felt a bit out of character for him. Despite that, he thought it fitting to take a look at a newly opened cafe that had been all the rage amongst the students. Something about there being cats?Â
When Chrom steps foot inside the cafe (after taking a fair bit of time to find it, at that), heâs greeted with the scent of cats; far too many cats all in one location, might he add. But that was the appeal of this sort of place, right?
Scanning the establishment, Chrom tries to find an open seat; unlucky for him to see that there were hardly any available single seats. He almost decides to take the moment to walk back out, but he stops, catching a head of blue hair similar to his own. Chrom laughs to himself, wondering whether his lack of sleep as of late is causing him to see familial resemblance in anyone with vaguely blue hair. âMaybe theyâd be willing to share a seat, though?â A passing thought, before he approaches the partially occupied table.Â
âExcuse me,â his voice comes out as he rounds the table towards the empty seat, âdo you mind if I-â he pauses, eyes steadily processing the person that now sat before him. Heâs unsure of how to respond initially; the fleeting assumption of just âseeing thingsâ shattering altogether.Â
  âLucina?!âÂ
Apparently, when Chrom is in shock, the volume of his voice is difficult to control.
in your eyes, am i merely a weapon?
mission board: pearlescent | faith +1 | chrom + rafal
Well; Rafal couldn't say Chrom's response was unexpected, or that his nature rooted in humanity wasn't prone to such predictable leniency. To be human was to be lenient, the Fell Dragon might argue - soft in ways his cutthroat kin would not dream. Founded upon the noble Emblem to whom he had lent his likeness, Rafal's understanding of Chrom even extended to his reach for goodness, in all things, and for most matters. He ought to have anticipated his gruesome proposal would fail to convince and charm.
"A shameâI was more than prepared to do the lion's share of work," expressed Rafal, seeming mildly to mean it. His was no great disappointment, however, especially when a favorable alternative should surface for consideration: "But, a scare, you say? Now, that is an approach I would find most agreeable as well as greatly suited to my talents."
Nearly agreeable, rather. If only that scare had more to do with the threats of physical harm that his partner so spurned. Rafal could temper his might with ease, allow merely its whispering suggestion to fall upon terrified ears and cow their owners into total submission. It would be effective; there would be immediate results; where, oh, where, was the harm to Chrom's 'modus operandi' in that? But, nevertheless, he understood: dragons with fondness for terrifying methodology could not be choosers. This was ultimately not Rafal's deeply invested plight but Chrom's, therefore his to commandeer.
Lastly, there existed the fact he was present purely for the hero's sake. This inclination, above all others, stamped a seal over his decision.
A sigh; eventual and relenting. ". . .You've a forceful way about you that I must admire. If you insist, then so be it. We will exact your favored method. I've no true leg in this issue, and thus no qualms in following your approach." No threats nor acts of physical harm. Begrudgingly, he slipped his all-too-human hand into the grip of the other. . .only to exert a dragon's undeniable pressure. Whether this were purposeful or unknowing byproduct of his strength, Rafal released before the pinkish tinge of Chrom's squeezed fingers could evolve to an aggravated red. He stepped forward then shot a patient, ever so slightly questioning glance over his shoulder.
( unknowing byproduct, then. )
"âWhat are you waiting for? The manager disappeared into his office. As promised, I shall follow your lead. . .Professor."
Relief briefly takes Chromâs expression, when the two men seem to come to an agreement. Rafal was right, Chrom was a bit forceful in his approach; but it was necessary. There was a very real possibility of needless harm befalling an innocent soul if Chrom hadnât been forceful in his foolhardy plan.Â
âIâm glad weâve been able to come to an ag-â then, his face contorts as Rafal takes Chromâs hand into his own. âRightâŚâ he thinks to himself, having forgotten that the white-haired man before him carried the strength of a dragon in his grasp. It was a painful reminder, but one that Chrom wouldnât call to unnecessary attention. Instead, he offers a hearty shake, before vigorously shaking his own hand when their shared grip loosens. âGods damn it that stung!â
While still tending to the pain in his hand, Chromâs unwitting compatriot eggs him on, urging the professor to make a move. âHah⌠right, letâs make our move, professor.âÂ
If only Chrom knew exactly how he would scare them, thoughâŚ
     â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â  đĄ â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â
Now back inside the shop, the manager that previously shooed the two away truly had disappeared. A dour-looking employee replaced where the manager once stood, likely aware of the situation all the same. âAh, welcome back, sires. The manager is off, so if you are to cause another ruckus, I ask that-â
Chrom clears his throat, before leaning in, a much more quiet anger in his voice and expression. âDo you wish to turn away professors of the Officerâs Academy?âÂ
The employee raises an eyebrow. âAnd what exactly are you trying to do here, sir?â
Sighing, Chrom glances back at his compatriot, as if trying to give some poor excuse of a signal for backup. Perhaps this truly would require something of a dragonâs scare? At the very least, he would sound more convincing with both professors speaking upâŚ
steel and wits alike sharpened
âIf itâs pirates youâre dealing with, seabound combat will surely be in the cardsâŚâ | Mission Board: Aphotic | No Skill Point
Valter had put forth the effort to demonstrate the importance of prior preparation; and indeed, heâd come prepared with a plan of his own; but when the other is prompted to demonstrate his own idea, the Moonstone is pleasantly surprised to find Chrom does, in fact, have something to share.
He stands then, crossing the distance to have a look for himselfâand what he finds reveals itself in the form of raging fires: a brilliant blaze meant to burn to an even more furious end. Itâs bold, to say the least, and certainly unconventional, but a gaze inquisitive begins to sparkle shortly thereafterâthis was bold. (To gain the ships necessary, knowing they were promised for destruction, would be a very difficult task, but that only meant that most would never conceive of such a thing.)
âwhich meant Valter was a fan. (A very big fan, in fact.)
â The local merchants would never agree to it, ââsaid with a smile and an expression thoroughly amusedââ and the Church would be hard-pressed to find the funds to purchase the ships necessary. As much as the pirates plague the locale, no one wants to be the one to make the ultimate sacrifice. â
But I like it, is the implied ending, though itâd take a deal of effort to press the Moonstone to say it aloudâperhaps if it were possible, if only with his good word, but otherwise? His approval remains decipherable only through a rumble of laughter; a glint in his eye that shines on such mischief. Proper destruction to get back at their foes.
(What of an artificial fog of war to make the onslaught less predictable? He never learned it himself, but heâd heard of such a thing in his studies; was it a thing their arsenal of mages possessed?)
The thought is tucked away for some other time; perhaps, in better circumstances, they might cross minds with actual potential for such carnage.
But in the meantime, they are here, attempting to deal in less violent methods. â I do have my own ideas, â Valter confirms, stepping back again to resume his seat, â but Iâm saving those for the meeting proper. Youâll hear them when the time comes. â
â I will say for now though that yours isnât a terrible plan; just unfeasible. It relies on a generosity that does not exist, and though it may work in another situation, greed will have it fall under this time around. â
A sigh finds its escape from Chrom; ultimately Valter was right, the resources to pull off such an idiotic gamble would be the single greatest hurdle, and one that no reasonable merchant would find it within themselves to offer. When this plan went off once before, it was due to a desperation induced by times of war; these pirate forces were nuisances, verifiably so, but a sacrifice of ships was far from necessary. Still, the suggestion itself should open up further possibilities.
âYouâre right,â Chrom finally voices, âhowever there should still be a potential for creating some sort of fog of war, without the needless sacrifice. Thatâs where I must admit, Iâve faltered a bit in my planning.â Chrom was aware that rejection was always possible; but that didnât mean he would be so willing to give up on his plan.Â
Since Valter hadnât been keen on sharing his own ideas yet, perhaps they could try to brainstorm modifications to Chromâs initial plan? At least, the exalt hoped for some sort of cooperation. It seemed more plausible now, if Valterâs laughter indicated some sort of approval.
âSince youâre holding off on sharing your own plans, perhaps you can help me brainstorm further.â Leaning in, Chrom continues. âYou mentioned specializing in aerial combat, yes? Perhaps we could use that to our advantage? Casting some sort of shield of fog from the skies seems like a possibility, though one that may require others to provide help. Iâve known my fair share of Pegasus Knights and Wyvern Knights who utilized the air to their aid, am I correct in assuming you to be just as expert in that?â
Chrom sounded genuine as he spoke; wanting to hear further criticism and remedies to his proposition. Commander in his own right, Chrom knew best when to rely on others for their thought and expertise.Â
they're calling it the greatest seance of all time
mission board: infamous | wandering street performer... | chrom // shigure
A performer? Any performer? The bard that the stranger is addressing looks up and down the street, as if searching for anyone that might fit that description.
Anyone else, that is. There are many performers of many talents in the town of Garreg Mach, after all. But the innkeeper has been telling him, hadn't she, for a whole moon now, to market yourself more, young man, put yourself out there! Maybe now is the time to take a leaf out of that book, on a whim?
"It's no trouble," says Shigure with a warm smile. "Still, might you be looking for me, by any chance?" He dips his head in a shallow bow. "I'm Shigure, a bard who works most nights at the inn in town. It's a pleasure to meet you, sir."
Shifting to stand beside the man, he tilts his head in question. "My primary trade is storytelling, but I'm also a competent singer and dancer," he continues. "Likely best known for my singing voice, actually..."
A quiet chuckle to himself, deliberately free of bitterness. "If you require any of these services, I would be happy to provide."
The man who introduces himself does so with a polite confidence, as such Chrom wonders if he found the right person.Â
A fleeting thought, quickly replaced with an understanding that this had been a misimpression beginning to sprout. Quickly, Chrom shakes his head and waves his hands, though for some reason he feels slightly guilty in doing so.Â
âThough impressive as your abilities may soundâŚâ he sighs, now rubbing the back of his head in an awkward gesture, âthey do not seem to be the ones that tickle my curiosity. See, rumors have been spreading about a performer capable of bridging the gap between life and death.â When he says the words aloud, Chrom feels ever bashful, his face flushed with an embarrassment that canât be taken back. It sounds so ridiculous to say to another living person.
But he shakes away the thought; he hadnât been the only one seeking out such a performer, so it was wrong to feel embarrassment for doing so. After all, the rumor existed for a reason, hadnât it? âPerhaps you may have heard of them? Iâm sure other bards within your circles have spoken about this mysterious performer, have they not?â Presumptuous, but not unreasonably so. Even if Shigure misunderstood Chromâs intent with his inquiry, it wouldnât prove all for naught.
âIf not, then I offer my apologies for bothering you so suddenly!â
welcome to the thunderdome
âł anniversary 2025 | gauntlets +1
The pain from getting hit in the stomach earlier still stings but Chrom had apparently taken the worst of their beating when they were outnumbered.
"It's likely the satisfaction of winning your food that will make them taste all the better. I just hope it's a meal worth the fight."
But any pleasure he's taken from this dims as he hears Chrom's words.
"Let's get you seen to first. With how much this place is being talked about, I wouldn't be surprised to find healers nearby."
He continues, "And I'm Ephraim. This isn't the way I imagined meeting anyone but I am glad it was you at my back. Chrom."
Just as he is about to suggest that they begin their search, the restaurant's door pops open and a stout lady gestures at the pair.
"Good job on sending those louts packing! Get in here, we've got a healer inside for ya." She tsks. "Too many gettin' hurt because of those pack of animals. The monastery sent a healer over, he'll see to ya! And my cookin' will tend to yer bellies!"
Ephraim looks to Chrom. "Well then...shall we?" He gestures for Chrom to go first.
The honor of meeting a capable fighter outweighs the stinging pain in his cheek. âEphraim⌠Iâll do myself good to remember the name. Now about that heal-â
And, as Chrom does his best to offer greetings and agree in getting a move on, a womanâs call reaches his ears. He cannot help but laugh, though slightly pained it was, at the healerâs tone. It was oddly comforting, hearing someone congratulate them for something so otherwise simple. Chrom winces, but the smile never leaves his face. âRight, letâs be off!â
Continuing to rub his hand against his jaw, Chrom leads the way towards a healer. Honestly, there was something of a sadness in his eyes as he realizes more time would pass until the two men could claim their desired prize. Long would the wait be worth; it would be difficult to even enjoy any sort of foodstuffs whilst his jaw stung in such an incessant manner.Â
A gentle sort greets the two; âah, more participants within this little ring. Right this way, Iâll see to your recovery.â The healer sent by the Monastery seemed to bear no surprise, as he took the pained exalt to sit. A sigh escapes Chrom, when the healer begins to work his magics. It is one of utter satisfaction.
Whilst the healer took to humming to himself, Chrom chose to strike conversation. âSo, Ephraim⌠What exactly brought you to this place? I presume you to have been more intrigued by waffles than blood sportâŚ?â
Why This :Erk: So Angry?
Pearlescent | Belle de la Luna w/ Chrom
Erk feels his cheeks start to burn. He shouldn't have mentioned that he actually had a lover. Just saying he didn't need help would have sufficed. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Why was he so stupid? "That's none of your business."
Is what he manages to spit out through his embarrassment. He didn't divulge things about himself to his fellow professors because there was no point. They weren't friends, and he had no reason to want to talk to them. Therefore, he didn't tell them anything about himself. Simple as that. He didn't exactly appreciate that sanctity between them being broken.
Still, he does light up a little at the mention of unique tomes, embarrassing himself further by his interest in them. He didn't want to be here, and showing interest in what he would get if he remained meant that he would have to stay. He shouldn't have said anything at all about repayment even being possible. He could have been home by now.
But, despite himself, he mumbles out, "Okay... only if that is a promise. It's a deal... Let's do... whatever this is."
Though his efforts were rather forceful by nature, Chrom canât help but smile when Erk responds in embarrassment. Was this the sort of schadenfreude Chromâs own kid sister found whenever she would tease him? If so, it was something nice to divulge in, only in moderation. It was not in his character to let such teasing go by for far longer than necessary.Â
That being said, his efforts pay off. Chrom beams further still when he draws the realization. As such, he offers a light bow in return. âNaturally,â he says, confidence never waning, âI am not the sort of man who draws back on his word. Your participation in exchange for a few tomes.â Now Chrom had to hope that those of House Ylisse wouldnât⌠question the request when it comes to be. That was a later concern; at present, howeverâŚ
A gesture to allow for Erk to pass Chrom in their stride. He wonders, in this moment, what fortune would befall the young man. Possibly something he would rather scoff at and ignore, angrily lamenting at a time wasted, rather than something that may be personally useful. Chrom himself wasnât too privy to any sort of concrete fortunes; but he was human after all. Human curiosity never seemed to cease even in the most inopportune of moments.Â
As such, Chromâs curiosity couldnât help but manifest in a bouncing excitement when the two found themselves waiting in a short line for the fortune teller. So much so, that before he realizes it; they were next.Â
âGods,â Chromâs nervousness passes in a thought. He gently pushes Erk forward once more, urging the youth to go first. A whisper follows from Chrom as he does, âso you donât back out while Iâm not lookingâŚâÂ
leonardo da ylisse paints the mona grissa
mission board: infamous | flying+1 | chrom // griss
Friend? Now that was bold. Maybe even bolder than having a bloodstained Hound from the infamous Four Hounds stand as a model for a portrait, here or in Elyos. But if anyone could be the human stand-in for a wyvern, it was probably a criminal. The church couldn't have possibly known that though, and all Griss was really here for was to clear some debts his mercenary paycheck couldn't cover. Defacing property... stealing alcohol from the kitchen... They'd have to throw him in the dungeon if they ever wanted him to stop though.
The familiarity pulls a draconically toothy grin across his face, and without even trying. Griss has always smiled like that, showing off how half his teeth are sharper than most people's and unsettling just about anyone meeting him for the first time, but that's what makes him perfect for this assignment. Chrom's a lucky one, and that's why Griss doesn't put up a fuss at first when he's asked to be more wyvern-like. Obediently, but in a way that looks like this is his normal way of being, he bends at the waist and spreads out his arms, his unblinking, rust-red eyes trained on this wannabe artist the whole time.
Lines like bloodstains snake up both arms between the white lines of old scars, stretch from wrist to shoulder, and then streak down his shoulder blades to hug around his ribs. The full breadth of his tattoos is a rare sight, but there lies the problem. And the problem with this entire exercise, in fact. In this sterile, feature-less room, five models stand in a circle at the center with their backs facing one another, wearing nothing but smallclothes as a handful of artists stare at them from behind their easels. A man undressed, being nothing but soft skin and, at best, mild self-consciousness, is about the farthest thing from the hard, reptilian scales of a dragon of any species. While by no means one of modest dress, even Griss understood that the mantle he often wore across his shoulders could do a better job of impressing the shape of wings than his wiry, though well-defined arms stretched out in a line.
"Wait, I got somethin' better," he says, and doesn't wait for Chrom's approval. A crate sits between him and the young woman on his left painting a different model, and so Griss goes over to hook his foot around it and kick it toward the center of the room. Spare brushes and some other supplies that had been sitting on it scatter across the floor, and the young woman yelps in protest, but it's all too loud in this otherwise silent drawing studio, so she ducks down to hide her red face and gather up her runaway tools.
"Ahem. Please refrain from disrupting the other artists," the instructor calls from the other end of the room. He'd had his nose buried in a book until now, and searches blindly over the heads of those gathered because the crash had only alerted him of something happening, and not who had done it.
"Wouldn't dream of it," Griss says, grinning, and then drags the crate the rest of the way to his place in the middle. Here, he kicks out his leg and steps halfway up onto the crate and puffs out his chest, doing his best impression of a mighty lizard lifting its head from a rock.
It's a shameless display, all things considered. Chrom's a lucky one. For the church's requirement that all models wear smallclothes, that is.
His modelâs grin was perfect, everything Chrom needed in someone portraying a mighty wyvern. He continues his sketching, with little mutters along the lines of âgood, good, keep that up,â escaping his lips every so often. This man was a natural when it came to posing! Chrom had seriously lucked out in his endeavors here.
Then, Griss speaks out, and before Chrom could make any comment, he was already well on his way to kicking a random crate. âW-Wait!â But his efforts were futile; there was already a mess scattering across the room. A sigh lets loose, and Chrom is already well on his way to helping another stunned (and even more embarrassed) artist pick up the pieces.
And once he finishes, heâs well on his way to quietly apologizing to the instructor, who seemed far too bored to be here, but attentive enough to notice this. How could he not be? His peace was disturbed, and without a care in the world at that.Â
Following his subject along, who now had assumed the pose of a powerful, cocky sort, Chrom couldnât help but sigh before gearing himself to sketch once more. âI feel as though we should be working closer together on these sorts of ideasâŚ!â His voice is calm, not-at-all scathing, both to not disturb the atmosphere of the room further, and to continue their steadied cooperation. Though, Chromâs eyes widen as he continues to sketch. As much as he wished to chastise his chosen subject, he could hardly argue with results.Â
Once his initial sketch is finished, Chrom shows his partner his current progress. And for all intents and purposes, while Chrom expected something far from perfect, he captured Grissâ likeness as a wyvern rather impressively for a beginner. âThoughts? Things are coming along rather impressively!â
Chrom really could not argue with results, as much as he wanted to.
i'm 22 and just met my adult grand niece
Ophelia stares. Â Her heart skips a beat, then two - several beats.
Her eyes, for what must be the seventieth time, trace the familiar lines of the mark on the man's arm. Â It's the same shape she's traced so many times with her fingers, in time of great solitude, searching for the strength of a Chosen One to call upon.
She knows, by this mark, that she is staring at a hero. Â But what's more, she may be staring at family.
Her mouth is dry. Â Each footstep she takes towards him is heavy and slow, as though she's walking through knee-high snow. Â And then when he turns, Ophelia freezes.
He doesn't have the face of a liar, nor does he carry himself like a tyrant. Â There is no reason she should have to hesitate.
Still.
Her hand crosses her torso and comes to rest on the opposite forearm, with her palm warming her matching mark through her sleeve. Â He wears his brazenly. Â He has removed an entire sleeve of his outfit to show it off!
Their eyes have met, though, and she will not back down now. Â She musters all the bluster inside her and brings it to the forefront.
âHark! Â Yon with the cerulean locks - you carry the mark of heroes on thy shoulder. Â Know you its true meaning?â
@soulsaligned
It always is a shock, whenever someone randomly calls out to Chrom.
For a moment, he assumes that the person calling out, a shorter sort, with rather impressively long hair at that, was calling out to someone else. After all, there was no shortage of blue-haired men and women at this academy. Plus, she was unfamiliar to Chrom, though something about her, especially in her manner of speaking, felt so familiar.Â
Yet when she points out the Brand on his arm, everything clicks. How could it be anyone other than Chrom, especially when he wore his Brand so openly. He smiles at this point, wondering what could be the source of this curiosity on his âmark of heroesâ he wears.Â
âOh, hello.â He follows his greetings with a bow towards this student. âYou speak of my Brand, yes?â Chrom wonders for a moment, if it would be better to be honest about his lineage, or hide it. Yet, if this young lady knew enough about the Brand to call it out, perhaps she already held some knowledge of Ylissean royalty. âIt is the Mark of Naga, though it is most commonly referred to as the Brand of the Exalt. All descendants of the First Exalt share this Brand.â He nods along, finding a bit of joy in being able to speak of his family history without care. âAs the current Exalt of the Halidom, it is of no surprise that I bear this Brand on my arm. It is a symbol of my ancestryâs victory in arms with the Divine Dragon, Naga.â
With a final nod, he finishes his brief recounting of the story. Then, curiosity beams on his face. âMight I ask what made you so curious about it? I hope the sudden history lesson wasnât boring in any way. Oh! And what is your name, young lady? I am Chrom, professor for the Black Eagles.â

ÂŤÂ infamous Âť â zephia & chrom.
"You," Zephia says, evidently amused now, "are a very charming liar."
She knows pain when she sees it, no matter his attempts to hide. The tension in his jaw. The set of his shoulders. The way he bites back a wince. It's a good look on him in the way that the ocean is more beautiful when disturbed by the wavesâthough, she might have to admit to being a little bit biased. She had made it abundantly clear that she did not want to be here, wasting her time pretending like there was any entertainment to be found in spinning and twirling and giggling like this wasâlike she wasâsomething normal.
(Hundreds of years, thousands, spent toiling for a dream. And for what?)
"...But not a very good one. Sit and rest," she bids, drawing away from him and gesture towards one of the chairs laid out. "We can say it's so that I can reflect on my dancing. After all, I would feel absolutely terrible if you were to stumble your way through the actual ball because you were too considerate to ask me to spare your feet."
Unsurprisingly, it was obvious that the man who hates to lie was a poor excuse for one when he tried to be.Â
Wordlessly, he nods, and the facade of his well-being drops in full, pain contorting his face as though it were an ugly portrait finally revealing itself to the room. Chrom began to wonder in earnest just how someone could step with such ferocity, and so many times in tandem. Yet all concern of Zephia doing so intentionally washes away; her concern was clear, and it had been the sign of an individual that meant well.Â
But one that just could not back that up in song and dance.Â
âThank youâŚâ he breathes, and as Chrom finds himself growing ever comfortable in his seat, he bends, going to massage his feet. A quiet âdamn!â escapes his lips, as he tries to alleviate the sting. But he cannot be rude, so after a few moments, he sighs and looks back up, trying to continue idle conversation. âAh, yes! The Ball. Do you have any in mind, as a potential partner? I imagine you are rather popular amongst the faculty here, I would be impressed to see you unattended.â
He laughs, honest words finding themselves rather easily; Chrom may not have found personal interest in her, but he still had eyes. Zephia was pretty, and she was kind enough to boot. She didnât have to take a partner into dance in order to have a good time at the Ball. âOh look at me, gossiping with fellow faculty. It feels rather simple, albeit nice all the same.â
the stick hunt decree.
mission board: anniversary | sword +1 | chrom & elffin
Chrom nods along, satisfied that Elffin seemed to take his advice well. Talking to him was easy, and perhaps that was thanks to the shared goal of finding the best possible stick. Yet, as they chatted along about childish things such as finding the perfect stick, it almost felt as though Chrom was speaking to a friend of old. It was something nice, comforting and easy to embrace.Â
Then Elffin chimes in with a follow up question, and Chrom thinks it over. There is a fair point to consider â for someone who has little experience with a weapon proper, how would they go about finding the best stick in the context of it being like a weapon? It was a difficult question, at least on paper. Though, when someone as simple minded as Chrom gave it significant thought,
âWell, then I still think it would matter if it felt comfortable in your hands, at that point. I suppose it is a more subjective idea then, when put that way.â His answer is as earnest as the question posed, and Chrom continues. âWherein lies your expertise, Elffin? Perhaps your ideal stick could be something similar to an instrument you were accustomed to?â
But before his question could be answered, his compatriot pointed out another stick. Or rather, a branch would be a more fitting comparison. âSturdy looking build, even I could tell from a distance.â Nodding, Chrom walks over to lift it from the ground, setting aside the sticks that already rest in his hands. There was heft to this branch, but not enough to deter Chrom from carrying it. It carried a similar weight as Chromâs own signature blade, though perhaps it was a smidge lighter than the Falchion had been.Â
Chrom took a careful few swings, making sure to stand far enough away so that he wouldnât hit Elffin in the crossfire. A satisfied hum escapes his lips, as he allows the stick to come to rest in his hands. âA fine pick, I say. This one feels right. Comfortable, easy to swing around. Just like a blade may be. Good eye, Elffin! I think youâre taking to the âlessonâ well!â Thereâs a sort of pride in Chromâs voice as he gave praise, happy to see that this was going well as swiftly as it had been.
"An instrument I play" His harp certainly came to mind, but if any branch could come close to mimicking its feel, he'd have to wonder at how poorly he would recognize balance. It would certainly make a poor weapon- far too fragile to deal damage to anything save itself. "I'll think about it."
But for the time being, he contents himself with watching the professor wave around the branch he had pointed out. Perhaps if he were generous, or if he squinted, he could claim that he could see the forms being done, but the truth was he was simply too unfamiliar with swordplay to even guess at them.
If Chrom said that he was using legitimate sword wielding techniques, Elffin would believe him just as much if he were told that he were just waving it about for fun.
Either worked, for the purposes of this exercise.
"Will you be using this one for the tournament, then? Or shall we keep searching?" There's a sense of accomplishment, Elffin thinks, at being able to guess at something that he otherwise could not determine.
It was a harmless sort of pride, as long as he was aware of it- and there was not much he could say for himself at being able to guess at a good stick to play-act as a sword. Paired up as they were, Elffin didn't have to concern himself regarding an entry for himself, either, only considering it for the sake of conversation. "We could try finding something of a similar size and shape, if you'd like backups."
Chrom hums a response in satisfaction, âthough I am not familiar with the instruments of Bards, as I stated, something that would feel comfortable to you would be the most effective stick of them all.â Perhaps an instrument may have been a poor example, though, regardless of Elffinâs profession. How would an instrument be translated in the form of a stick?
âRegardless,â Chrom swings his stick once more, and hums happily when he does. âItâs perfect.â He practically sings the response, as he lets the stick rest at his side. âI will be using it in the coming tournament, though I cannot allow you to go empty-handed, Elffin.â Thereâs something childish about Chromâs excitement; truly, had he been set inside Ylisseâs royal walls with such a friend, would Chromâs adolescent days have felt less lonely?Â
Such thoughts need not be explored, now. âA backup would not be necessary. I would be far more comfortable knowing you were able to take a stick of your own home, even if you hadnât partook in the tournament yourself.â It was the right thing to offer Elffin, at that moment. Chrom would take his prize home, regardless of any victory or loss. So of course, Elffin deserved to be afforded the same luxury.Â
âSo, letâs continue searching. Of course, that is unless you wish to call things to an end here? I would not wish to force you on a foolâs errand you wish to have nothing to do with.â That would also hold true. Chrom wasnât the sort of person to force someone to do something against their will.
who let the dogs out?
mission board: infamous | laundry | chrom // m!corrin
Corrin didn't exactly expect for his laundry to be swapped with someone else's, but he had known instantly when he was handed a different set of clothes than his own. On account of said outfit containing shoes. He's not certain that he even owns a single pair of shoes to accompany any of his wardrobe.
So he sets off, determined to find his belongings and return these clothes to their proper owner. They were a little baggy, but other than that, they still fit reasonably well. Even so, he'd rather they be back with who they belonged to than sticking around with him. They didn't really suit his style anyway.
He's walking about the monastery, boots slung over his shoulder because even if there was a mixup, he'd be damned if he was going to wear these shoes, when he hears someone call out to him. The owner of the clothes maybe? He could only hope.
He turns quickly, a polite smile across his face as he nods a hello to the man talking about... a reunion? He doesn't look familiar, but maybe... nah, that didn't sound right at all.
"Um... do I know you?" Oh, darn, that sounds so rude, maybe he should start with something a little more polite. This man seems to know him at least. "Er, sorry! But nope! Got no idea what happened! I'm glad you found me though, because I was starting to trip over your pants."
A look somewhere between confusion and disappointment lights itself in Chromâs eyes. He understood that it was possible, but to not even be recognized by a comrade he briefly took to arms with? Lest he was mixing him up with another? But that would be impossible, for Corrin didnât seem to reject the name, either.Â
Whatever the case may be, Chrom did not have any reason to call it to question, for now. It would be a confusing bridge to cross later. âHm⌠perhaps I did mistake you for another⌠but my clothes! Yes, you have them!â Gesturing to himself, Chrom laughs, awkward as he does. âAnd I yours, I imagine. Please, tell me that you have the rest of my laundry somewhere? I had set yours to rest within my roomâŚâ Though, he was horribly uncertain whether or not that would mean that it was still there. For all Chrom knew, someone couldâve been pulling a prank on the both of them.
A sigh escapes his lips at the thought; such a prank would only be more of a hassle than itâs even remotely worth. Yet he could not stand any second longer without shoes to grace his feet. How could Corrin walk along barefoot all day? It was beyond uncomfortable!Â
âPerhaps, wherever they are⌠we could walk to them. And soon⌠please? Your clothes are incredibly tight.â The more Chrom stands and speaks, the more the differences in their respective figures begin to draw ever clearer. Corrin was far smaller than Chrom by comparison, to an uncomfortable degree at that.Â
  âPlease.â
practice makes perfect
toaball2026 w/ @soulsaligned
Alear is almost surprised at the fact that Chrom so quickly falls into a rhythmic sway that almost perfectly accompanies the music that rises and falls in the background-- she supposes it makes sense, with him being royalty of Ylisse. His experience far outweighs her own, and she almost feels a little sheepish at the idea that she's a bumbling fool when it comes to dancing in comparison. Clearly, he doesn't seem to mind as he holds her close; the warmth of his body is .... relaxing, for some reason. The scant distance between them has her tilting her head with an attempt to see his face. For whatever reason, he doesn't seem to be too keen on looking at her, and she can't figure out as to why. "Hey, no apologies! I'm the one who messed up. Either way, I... did have fun. We went out in style, don't you think?" The lilt of her voice remains teasing as her arms round his neck to support herself to continue following his steps. This time, she's trying extra hard not to misstep, and she seems to have found her own rhythm. "Partner? Ha! I think I like the sound of that!" Equals, allies, friends. It's then that her voice dips in volume and tone, her head tilted down to hide her expression. It's embarrassing, just a bit, to be as open as she is with her thoughts, especially when they seem to be a jumble in her head anyways. "You know, when the war in Elyos ended... all of the Emblems faded when their power was spent. That included you. If I had to be honest, I never thought I'd have the opportunity to talk to you again." The song drifting from the ballroom has shifted into a slower tempo, and her movements have become sluggish as a result. At this point, she's barely keeping up with any sort of a dance, instead keen on staying within his space. "... I'm so, so happy that it wasn't the end then. I really am. Coming here with you is certainly more than I could've asked for!" She blinks a few times before realizing that her cheeks are burning, finally moving to look up at him as she sputters. "I-I mean-- Just-- gah!" @soulsaligned
Chrom finds it rather difficult to steady his heartbeat as well as he is able to his footsteps. Especially as the conversation draws somewhere more serious, thanks to his careless words. Yet, as it becomes ever clearer that Alear was merely existing within Chromâs space, he chooses to do much the same; merely opting to hold her, rather than continuing their dance. It was something resemblant of an unspoken agreement, something that seemed to be constant with them, this night especially.
Especially when the words chosen cause Chrom to flush in warm red. He tries to find the best words to reply, thinking carefully on everything he can say and wants to say. He wants to back out; tonight was awful for Alear in every which-way possible, and making this moment about his own feelings was far from ideal.Â
Yet, the looming threat of Veyle chastising him if he didnât at least try, pushes Chrom forward, rather than allowing him to stumble backwards.
âYeahâŚâ he says, quietly. âIâm honored to have been able to come here with you.â Heâs honest, and in some ways this moment feels like deja-vu. âEven more so that you were able to find me again, even if there are slight differences to be found here and there.â Weird, it was, to acknowledge someone elseâs desire to find him. It made Chrom feel so warm, a warmth that embraced him with everything that could in that moment.Â
A warmth that breaks briefly, as Alear stammers something in response to her own proclamation. He laughs, and it is an earnest laugh. One that takes him out from the nerves that envelop him so coarsely. âIt seems as though Iâm not the only one embarrassed!â He sighs, relieved by his laughter, the brief freedom from his own nerves giving a gentle encouraging push as he finally finds it in himself to look at the woman before him. âItâs cute. I think I adore that the most about you.â
And now, it was his turn to feel embarrassment about his choice of words. The respite offered by his own nerves was only brief, soon wrapping him once more. He stammers, something akin to an apology being intelligible. âF-Fuck- uhm! Sorry! Agh!â He inhales, then exhales once again, catching himself as he does. âIâŚâ
Heâs unsure what to say next, without digging a hole deep enough that he cannot remove himself from.
