i saw 'oppenheimer' and now i'm not interested in seeing nolan's the oddysey (2026):

dislike nolan's most recent work: 'oppenheimer'. every time i think about it since watching it, i dislike it more, i get frustrated just by the thought of it.

what i disliked most about oppenheimer is something that could mess up my experience of watching the oddysey. i hated oppenheimer as a character, i felt like the movie kept me at a distance from understanding how he felt, etc etc. and i hated the one-dimensional female characters

but what i hated most is that nolan changed these interesting complex women into that: flat, obsessed with him for some reason, only exist in the story to further his development. - and the oddysey has some complex female characters that can easily be turned into what the women of oppenheimer were

if i'm watching the oddysey i want to be experiencing the oddysey as it existed. this huge star of a director is taking a huge work as homer's oddysey is and making a mockery out of it with that fuckass steel-looking shit? in our bronze age greece? that damned viking ship from one of the trailers? is there a single greek or greek-descent actor there? even greek-looking would do.

i don't even care if telemachus calls odysseus 'dad'. apprently homer didn't actually write it in such a polite and impersonal way, that's the creation of the translators. but can it *look* how WE 100% KNOW it looked like?

idk if this is the fault of nolan or if filmbros did it on their own but the campaign online to pressure everyone to watch it in imax and that if you've seen it not in imax you've basically seen half the movie... fuckkk offf.

first of all, how elitist is that? there's literally a comprehensive list (on wikipedia) of all imax theatres in the world, that's how little there are of them.

second of all the movie was released in regular theatres. that's the end of my argument on why people are allowed to judge the movie if they saw it not on imax. the movie was released, it's a finished product and so it can be judged in whatever form it was made accessible.

Okay, on a more serious note about “Avatar Seven Havens”, the one thing I’m disappointed about with the series is that it seems like Avatar Studios is too afraid of continuing the thread from Korra. I feel like there was a lot of room to really explore the state of the world after Korra, such as the new Airbenders trying to form their own nation, new alliances being formed, the Avatar feeling more and more like a relic of the past due to the advancement of technology.

Instead, they went the post-apocalyptic route. Sounds interesting, but it also feels like it was done because the writers were either afraid of continuing the world expansion started by Korra or just didn’t know how. Personally, I’m leaning towards they didn’t know how considering how Legend of Korra approached more serious topics (coughnonbenderdiscriminationcough). So instead of dealing with things that are beyond their capabilities, such as complex politics, they wipe the board clean so that it’s back to spirits and magic.

That’s the one thing I’m disappointed by. I’m actually fine with everything else. Korra being a hated figure could work as a meta-narrative on Korra’s actual reputation in the fanbase. The Avatar being a hated figure is something I actually really like since that’s a natural development for this kind of character. If there’s a superhuman figure existing in the world whose main responsibility is keeping the peace between the nations, then none of the nations actually have freedom/autonomy since the Avatar is the world police. It makes sense that the Avatar would eventually be hated once the people realize they have to abide by this superhuman’s authority, especially since the Korra series introduced democracy.

But the post-apocalyptic setting…it feels like a cop-out. In my opinion, it feels like Nickelodeon didnt want the Avatar Universe to get too complex, so they reset the world in a way that the main focus will be on more cartoonish concepts. Sure, post-apocalyptic can still be dark, but the politics of Korra (and even ATLA) are gone now. Even though I have MAJOR gripes with how Korra approached politics, the show at least had the courage to take it on. But now, Nick seems to be pushing for the Avatar Universe to be a lot safer and to take less risks. I mean, look at the ATLA Netflix show, they took away Sokka’s misogyny because they thought it was too much for present day audiences.

I guess we’ll see how this goes. I like some of the ideas, but I’m skeptical overall.

I absolutely love Miya Cech, I follow her on insta and she seems adorable. But I doubt this is the right track to follow for a character like Toph. (I'm also certain this wasn't Miya's decision but rather the writers, but they are once again letting the young actors take the fall for them just like they did with the changes in Sokka's character, I'm noticing a bad pattern here.)

The whole point of Toph is that she was raised with femininity and grace forced upon her, manners and etiquette being an important part of high society. Being feminine for her also meant not being able to fully embrace her element, seeing as earth is often associated with brute force and strength.

Being feminine just wasn't her, and in running away and embracing who she really is she rejected it completely, learning to love herself in her own way. Toph being Toph drove forward the story! And yes, this came with a bunch of flaws. Toph had a big mouth, was aggressive, rude (which she chose to be), not hygienic, and chose to exhibit bad manners.

I once again notice this pattern of the Netflix writers taking any flaws a character might have and trying their damnest to erase them. Katara wasn't allowed to be a thief, or decisive, or angry. Sokka wasn't allowed his sexist -> feminist arc. Aang wasn't allowed to actually run away from responsibilities. And now Toph isn't allowed to be the brutish girl she is.

Netflix's Avatar the Last Airbender Season 2 is coming out soon and from the trailer it looks better but the problems with Season 1 wasn't anything that could be recognised in the trailer.

1st and foremost they talk too much. They keep and keep talking, the dialogue would benefit incredibly by being condenced, having more meaning in a smaller number of sentences (thinking about how Lin-Manuel Miranda said he wrote Hamilton. He'd write the lyrics and then see how the same idea could be said in less lines and hes'd repeat the process until it's incredibly tight). We never get to think about anything, they say it all outright.

2nd, they messed up every character's motivations and, well, character. Some are worse than other but all lack depth. Talking about your feelings and struggles is not depth.

For a series that's supposed to be for an older audience, it has much less nuance, no thinking, on the audience's part, at all. I'm not confident they will get out of that mindset for season 2.

can't stop thinking about how andy weir said that rocky is essentially baby talking to grace the entire time because the way he normally speaks is too advanced for their makeshift translator to understand (which makes sense, there is a limited amount of words inputted). so basically the entire time we've been treating rocky as if he's one of the dogs from "up", the ones with the collar that outputs their thoughts in human language. we've been treating rocky like a pet. when actually, rocky has been talking to ryland like a puppy the entire time.... even before y'alls fanon of ryland becoming rocky and adrian's pet human in his zoo enclosure.
