Perhaps it was time that caused Kay to forget her name and when she was born. Yet she prefers to see it as side effect of her transcendence, that distinction that can be drawn between herself and other ghosts, when she let go of everything that remained of her human life and became a guardian spirit. She had been quite young when she died, something that had lent itself to her acceptance of her new form. What she did remember, was her death, though it was more like the memory of a story told once many years ago, gaps filled in with imagination and logic. The only reason she really remembered it at all, was because it was a story doomed to repeat.
She couldn’t have been older than fourteen at the time. People started disappearing, too fast to count. An epidemic that seized everyone in mere days. No one knew who had caused it, no one who could have known anything lived long enough to tell a story. Being a child, she was never told why people were disappearing, or what was happening. In truth, it was unlikely even the adults truly understood the powers that had been at work. Yet one with a true name like hers, was never going to sit idly by in blissful ignorance. So she investigated. She would talk to those who had contracted the disease and yet live, sneaking around at night, searching for clues. Needless to say, she too fell ill and met her end shortly after.
They so often say curiosity killed the cat, yet few knew the latter half of the expression, that satisfaction brought it back. Kay’s ghost had been wandering the earth for centuries, always gaining knowledge but never truly getting the answers she’d been seeking. Answers that she had died searching for. It was by a coincidence that some centuries later she happened upon a town, experiencing an epidemic near identical to that which had killed her. This time it was different though. She was a ghost, she could see the phantom, she understood what was happening. She understood why she, among so many others, had died. Her business could no longer be called unfinished. She expected to pass on as most ghosts did, but she did not. Instead she transcended. She had met a few guardian spirits in her travels, but never had it occurred to her, that she herself might become one.
That phantom, she later came to know, was referred to often as ‘The Plague’. Something that only appeared every fifteen years. Something that she feared was going to make its way to Port Ashborne soon. So she made her way there, unsure what she could do to help but resolving to try. In the mean while she spends her days at the Pisces, answering the questions of it’s patrons and in turn gaining more knowledge for herself.
Shanna Fischer (business partner): When Kay first arrived to the city, Shanna was generous enough to offer a place to haunt, the bar where mediums and exorcists frequent. They are more of business partners than friends, however.
Tracy Monahan (friend): as a Guardian Spirit of Knowledge, Kay is drawn to the woman who is could see the past, present and future. She visits the Crossroad often to discuss… well, everything. She is probably one of the few souls who could understand Tracy.
Exorcist Network (source): Kay assists mediums and exorcists seeking answers, giving them advice on dealing with any ghost or phantom that hurts others.
The Guild (source): Compared to her, most magicians in the Guild are like infants fumbling to the maze of arcane arts. She is revered by many magicians for her contribution to the Library, but at the same time feared for her vast knowledge in magic.
Though she ad been on this earth for a time that likely constitutes at least a millennium, Kay never really grew up. She still retains that childlike sense of curiosity and wonder that catalysed her death. She is friendly and outgoing, particularly for a ghost, and enjoys nothing more than talking with mediums. She doesn’t demand anything in exchange for the knowledge she provides, but appreciates it when others share their own information. Despite all of this, she is far from naive or innocent. If she, or someone she considers a friend, is threatened, she has centuries worth of magical knowledge she is prepared to use.
She never took to possession, but what she lacks in that is made up for in her skills with both poltergeist, and knowledge of how to achieve soul resonance.
Over the course of her existence, she has learnt many branches of magic. Though ghosts usually are highly unstable with magic, she has honed her skills and can now use most spells with relative confidence.
She holds nearly endless knowledge of the world, which she happily shares with those who truly wish to learn.
