Father has recently taken to calling me ‘rotund’ or ‘greedy’ and offering unsolicited commentary upon my dining habits. A grievous slander, if ever there was one. Very well, then! I shall answer not with protest, but with action! I shall devote myself to the gymnasium until I possess not merely a six-pack, but a twelve-pack so magnificent that Father shall be forced to retract his accusations! He will rue the day he underestimated my determination!
Father took me to the park of amusement today. I found myself calling to him at every turn. ‘Father, look at me!’… ‘Father, watch!’ And, to his credit, he did. Every single time. I cannot deny that it made the day all the finer.
I only wish he understood one small thing… I do not befriend others to defy him. I simply find joy in the company of nearly everyone I meet. It is in my nature to greet the world with curiosity, not suspicion. Surely there is no great crime in wishing to call a stranger ‘friend’.
