I’m obsessed with the hotel bar scene because Shane is like fully flirting with Ilya the entire time and Ilya is too busy obsessively asking him if he’s still with Rose and trying to figure out if he’s entering his side hoe era or not
that scene cracks me up because you are sooo right their perspectives could not be more different 😂 shane is like WOW!!! I feel like a million-pound weight [the crushing burden of performing compulsory heterosexuality] has been lifted from my shoulders! I got myself a cute little outfit and I’m rolling up to the hotel bar to Get! My! Man! ilya meanwhile is like well the last time we made eye contact I was chewing on a hot woman’s ear and trying to communicate to you with my eyes that I hate you and don’t need you and have never needed you except then I went home alone that night and realized that I love you and I’ll die if I can’t have you so if you want me to crawl on my knees for a hundred miles through the desert repenting I’ll do it and if you want to fuck around on your girlfriend? fiancée? fuck is she already your wife? then I’m here and ready to make that happen and we can drown in the guilt of that together baby I’ll do whatever it takes to be the millstone around your neck. each bringing a really different energy to drinking their respective corona without a lime
"I like you" isn't just a stepping stone to "I love you" - it is a distinct narrative beat in its own right.
As the audience, we already know that Ilya loves Shane because we heard him say it in Russian. But we also know that love is not enough - Shane loves Rose but they weren't compatible. Sometimes love isn't enough, for a variety of reasons.
This is why Shane and Ilya are terrified of coming to the cottage. Because we still don't know if they're compatible beyond the incredibly hot sex and psychic level hockey passes. The tuna melt date was nice before Shane crashed out, but that was just one afternoon.
"I like you" is the missing piece in their relationship. I know that I love you and I desire you and we play good hockey together, but do I like you?
The cottage scenes answer: yes. I like playing with you and I like cooking with you and I like talking to you and I like sharing space with you and I like sleeping next to you and I like waking up with you. I like you.
I like you and I love you and I still have no idea how we can possibly make this work but I really want to figure it out.

we had it almost
“I never want to come back here again. I fucking hate it here. And they all fucking hate me. I pay for everything. I make sure everyone has clothes they like. I make sure the food is perfect. That father is buried next to his parents, that the tomb is perfect. And the only fucking word I ever hear is: i want more Ilya, i need more Ilya. More, more, more, more, more. And I have nothing for these people. I give them everything.. but I feel fucking empty. They don't care, they look at me and see a bank. Or an enemy. Or I don't even know what. My brother, he always hated me. And I know why... but it kills me. And it kills me that he took care of my father and I didn't. But I couldn't. I wasn't here. I still paid for it all. And he will never forgive me. For any of it. For existing. And it means... I have no one now. Well not no one, I have Svetlana. She loves me, and I love her. But not like... fuck me. But not like I love you. That's the worst fucking part of all this is. That all I want is you. It's always you. I'm so in love with you and I don't know what to do about it.

„You think we need to talk?” „No, after.” Heated Rivalry | Rose (1.04)
I've seen criticism of Heated Rivalry (both the book and tv show) for not showing enough of the rivalry between Ilya and Shane, especially since we get right to the heat.
I'd argue that it's not inconsistent or shallow writing, but an intentionally written conflict between how others perceive and talk about them vs how they actually are with each other.
When we see the media or the league play up the rivalry there's always a moment to counter it. The CCM commercial shoot tries to pose them in a stare down, but they break out laughing. The league tries pit them against each other at the all-star game and puts them in front of the press, but we get an endearing moment of Shane helping Ilya out with his language barrier. Even when they're competing against each for the first time in 2008, Shane takes the initiative to introduce himself outside the arena away from everyone else, despite the Canada vs Russia commentator starting to create the rivalry narrative.
Their friends and family also reinforce how much they hate each other and, in response, they cover up what they're actually feeling or experiencing. Hayden says "Shane hates Rozanov" just before we see Shane be happy for Rozanov's cup win.
Those around them also miss the fact that when they are competitive with each other, its not out of hate or anger, but joy and love. There is a mutual respect and understanding between them when it comes to winning and competing and they genuinely love playing against each other. It's not until they are on the outs in episode 4, that their performance goes down.
So, yes, they are not actually bitter rivals, despite their world claiming otherwise. That's the point.
