Eddie hated talking to people some days. And that went double when the person he had to talk to was the attractive owner of the building who could probably turn him into a tree or something equally greek myth worthy. But, some things had to be done, and here he was, approaching juniper selene by the pool. “Erm, I think one of the residents had a bit of a.. magic flare up? there um, some sort of tree growing up  out of the eight floor library. I took the books out of the way so they wouldn’t get damaged -” because what else would he have done, “ But the tree is. There”

Juniper snarled as she grabbed her book and stuffed it into her bag. She stood up and slipped her flip flops back on her feet. ‘‘Puppy, baby, can’t you just pee on it and leave me be?’‘ June rolled her eyes as she grabbed her stuff. ‘‘Thank you kindly for saving books no one reads.’‘ She pointed her bag in the direction of the building. ‘‘Go. Lead the way.’‘

‘‘I hope you have a really fucking good reason for bothering me right now.’’ June sighed as she pulled her book off her face. ‘‘Can this wait? I’m obviously busy.’‘

“Don’t worry, I’m sure Lucas’ll look out for me.” She said, although she was quite sure that Juniper wouldn’t actually worry considering the whole just met, gonna move on whatever thing. She formed a small ‘o’ with her lips as she put the pieces together. “So I have a job, don’t ah… worry about the rent… checks. Gonna do great with that whole thing.”

If Juniper didn’t care for her residents the Rose Gardens would have gone out of business years prior. She made it her business to know everything and anything about the people she lived with and when she couldn’t – she paid others to find information for her. She rolled her eyes at the young girl in front of her. ‘’Well, I expect you will, otherwise, safe haven or not I will evict you.’’ She offered a polite smile. She turned to leave before turning back around and making a tutting sound, ‘’If you and your brother are going to run with the pack during full moon nights, make sure you don’t track mud on your way in.’’

“I’ll try to remember that.” Yochi smiled, and stuck out a hand. “Yochi Cantrell, total Noob. Don’t tell the dude with the pamphlets?”

‘’That dude with the pamphlets probably was a ghost or a troublemaking super. I don’t have a pamphlet person. New-comers meet with Cathy at the front desk or one of my siblings – like I said, you really must watch yourself. You look sweet and certain types enjoy that.’’ Juniper scrunched her nose but tried to offer a kind smile. Fresh meat, indeed. She raised an eyebrow at the Cantrell name. Great. Another one of those.  She shook the girls hand with less than normal effort before introducing herself. ‘’Juniper Selene, your rent checks go to me. ‘’

“Ah, Roses spawn, you’re back” Ciara responded, with a sneer, not looking away from her reflection. She could practically feel the scales of her other form shifting, ready to destroy the woman if she proved a threat to the objects in the shop. “Perhaps you should. Rose certainly knew the value of fear.” At her words, Ciara just shrugged, stepping away from the mirror slightly to shift the way a picture hung every so slightly. Taking the polaroid out of curiousity more than anything else, she stared at if for a moment, lost in thought. “I remember it. Tommy Kiegan and Sarah Liea got caught on it once. Cause quite the scandal” She recalled, before waving a hand airly. “Unfortunately, I can’t help you. It no longer exists, in that form at least. Rose gifted it away one holiday season, and last I saw it it had been completely redone, turned into some decorative coffee table or something. Waste of a perfectly good chaise” She snorted, shrugging “ I could get you one like it, but it will cost you” At the comment about her age, Ciara just smiled sweetly. “You can have that one if you like. Might help you to keep an eye on those wrinkles you’re getting. You shouldn’t frown dear, it makes them worse.”

Juniper bristled slightly at the Rose Selene comment but gave Ciara a toothy smile anyway. She gave a slight laugh as she walked away -- not out of fear or a sense of self preservation, but out of a way to stop herself from striking the other woman. She decided to browse the shelves. ‘‘Rose was an idiot, no wonder you like her so much.'' Rose Selene had infinite potential but squandered it for friendship, love, and a dream that she never carried to fruition. No, her children and their children and their children's children -- including Juniper-- had made the Gardens as successful as they were. Rose had simply given it a name. ‘’As long as the one you find is in the same color palette. The room requires one. I’m sure you’ll be able to find an acceptable replacement.’‘ Juniper rolled her eyes at some antique chests in the corner that she recognized from her youth before walking back to the dragon. At the age comments she let out a humorless laugh before pursing her lips. ‘‘Yes, well, not all of us are made from dust and scales, you know.’‘

“So I totally got lost on my way back, but that’s like, not a problem. Cause there’s a few road signs and Rose Gardens is really well lit and everything but can you just tell me real quick if I’m on the North or East side? Or… West or South.”

“Alright,” Jason growled, stepping into the commons and brandishing a pair of sparkly pink booty shorts. His gaze swept around the room, trying to pinpoint who he suspected the owner of the shorts was. “Where’s Kalina Young? By the time I’m done yelling at her, she’s going to be Kalina Old.”

Juniper pulled her glasses onto her head and bit her lip as she contemplated  the plant display in the corner of the commons. She hated the more tedious aspects of her job, but without her, the Rose Gardens would fall into complete chaos. She moved one pot over an inch and now that she was satisfied, smirked and moved away. She checked the item off her task list on her IPhone and turned around. ‘‘Was that a funny joke to you, vampire?’‘

Ciara was, technically, the fifth owner of this antique shop, though two others had also been her, just under different names and identities, while the other two had been humans she had hoarded who helped to hide her secret. Still, the shop was just as much hers as it had ever been, cramped and cluttered with things the dragon had no desire to hoard anymore. So, she occasionally allowed others in to take from it, as long as they paid her handsomely. The shop had gathered a reputation for having no set hours, a series of strange owners, a tendency to close for months, and a nearly perfect chance that anything you bought was, in fact, an original antique (or at least a reproduction so perfect many humans couldn’t tell). Like the mirror in front of her, some rococo thing covered in gold, which she was pretty sure she had gotten as a courting gift from some duke when it was popular. Never authenticated, but authentic all the same. The bell above the door chimed, and the awareness of something not-hoard in her hoard drifted up her spine, but Ciara just continued to fix her makeup. “We’re closing in thirty minutes. You break anything and I kick your ass before you buy it”

‘‘Hush, Ciara, you don’t scare me. ‘‘ Juniper browsed the items on display with a raised brow. It was all paltry trash to her, but for some reason the old coot adored the mess. The clack of her heels on the floor  were the only sound she made until a non-committal hum. ‘‘Unfortunately, Ms. Travers, I require some of your expertise on a personal matter. ‘‘ June approached the woman and dug around in her designer bag. ‘‘I’m refurnishing the seventh floor relaxation room and I need this particular item.’‘ Juniper handed the photo to Ciara. It was a Polaroid of an antique chaise longue in a floral pattern. ‘‘If you don't already have it, I expect you to get it. ‘‘ She sighed before flipping her long hair over one shoulder. She ran a manicured hand along the edge of the spectacular mirror. ‘‘Still collecting all this old junk? Does it remind you of your youth you, old bag?’‘
