The thing about Discworld, you see, is that it’s a very hopeful form of cynicism. It doesn’t just tell you that the world is crap, it says, well, yes, of course the world is crap, but that’s why you should be hopeful, and helpful, and kind, and why you have to be good, because maybe you can make it a little less crap.

Oh god are u kidding me? No. This is not “ a new hopeful form of cynicism” this is literally just optimism.

We’re surrounded by cynics who claim that optimism is stupid – that you have to be an idiot, or in deep denial, to have hope. That the only logical way to respond to the horror of the world is to give in to despair.

Cynicism’s become so trendy that people now accept the idea optimism = stupidity as if that’s the actual definition of optimism, and not just some bullshit fake definition a cynic made up to make their defeatism sound smart.

And you have people saying, “Well, I don’t wanna call myself an optimist, because I don’t wanna sound stupid. Optimists are stupid. I’m smart. Cynics are smart, so I must be a cynic. But not like those other ideologically defeatist cynics. I’m a NEW, SPECIAL breed of EVOLVED cynic!”

No. You’re an optimist. Own it.

Optimism is not pretending that the world is good. Optimism is believing that we have the power to make the world better. 

That’s what optimism has always meant.
