I’m not gonna judge Nolan’s Odyssey movie until I see it but I sort of don’t understand why pretty much the entire cast is just celebrities. There don’t seem to be any debut actors in the entire main cast. Even I’ve heard of most of these people and even the ones I haven’t heard of have already been in multiple popular projects.

I mean they could’ve picked up like even one singular unknown actor is all I’m saying. Even one actor of Greek descent. I’ve got no issue with some celebrities being in this movie. It’s just weird that literally every single named role is filled by one.
The people cast in this movie are also in so famous that it’s distracting territory and that’s a casting decision that can be critiqued for such an important story. As someone who educates people about ancient literature as a bit of a hobby and through my own personal writing I have an interest in how this movie is telling this story because it’s going to be a lot of people’s frame of reference for The Odyssey in the future.
the first couple of practices with boston, ilya keeps hearing his new teammates call out “big red.” he’s still learning english but he knows enough to figure out it’s a nickname. and by the end of the week, he is annoyed and is like, “this is dumb name. not funny at all. you call me ‘red’ because i’m russian? so lame.” and then his teammates have to be like, “no, no dude. ‘big red’ is our nickname for marly because his first name is cliff, which is short for clifford.” and ilya’s like ???
and that’s how the entire team ends up spending their friday night watching clifford the big red dog with 19-year-old ilya rozanov.
and the fact that ilya kisses shane in front of david and yuna. ilya who has just met these people after being outed to them and after years of them believing he is both an asshole and their son's mortal enemy. and he already feels safe enough to kiss shane in front of them. we are good here.

My biggest tip for fanfic writers is this: if you get a character's mannerisms and speech pattern down, you can make them do pretty much whatever you want and it'll feel in character.
Logic: Characters, just like real people, are mallable. There is typically very little that's so truly, heinously out of character that you absolutely cannot make it work under any circumstance. In addition, most fans are also willing to accept characterization stretches if it makes the fic work. Yeah, we all know the villain and the hero wouldn't cuddle for warmth in canon. But if they did do that, how would they do it?
What counts is often not so much 'would the character do this?' and more 'if the character did do this, how would they do it?' If you get 'how' part right, your readers will probably be willing to buy the rest, because it will still feel like their favourite character. But if it doesn't feel like the character anymore, why are they even reading the fic?
Worry less about whether a character would do something, and more about how they'd sound while doing it.
I don't remember where I saw this piece of advice so I can't credit it, unfortunately
But it was along the lines of "instead of asking whether something is out of character, ask 'what would it take for this character to do this'"
Which I think fits really nicely with this advice of making the actual action itself also feel in character
when you find someone who's equally unwell about The Character

“Do it scared” “do it alone” are all great tips, but my biggest takeaway from therapy is do it messy. This is especially true if you’re getting out of a burnout, which I experience often. Literally just do it messy. You don’t need to pick the perfect trail to walk, the perfect playlist to listen to, whatever the fuck it is. You don’t need to have a meticulous to do list and wake up at the exact time you planned and drink the exact amount of water you planned to drink. Like the biggest thing for people like me to remember is sometimes it’s okay to do it messy. Put on a random yt workout and just get it done in sweats. Do 5 minutes of a daunting task and go from there. Sometimes just getting up is a win during intense burnouts or depressive funks. Literally just do it messy.
