Iām curious about some outside povs of the. Everything going on. Idk if youāve talked much about Gossan or anyoneās thoughts on Rhode and Odieās situation

i get it I get it!! ok so like. was thinking the other day about how the parts of odie's past that rhode doesn't know about would affect things & realised quite how scary all this would initially be for the founders (especially gossan. oh dear god.). this is very gossan & hornfels focused I fear I still need to puzzle out what I'm doing with slate in here.
odie and gossan have always had a Weird relationship. unlike rhode & their goss, gossan was more like. the mentor that stepped up for odie, on account of when feldspar vanished (odie was, say, about 14) and it's always been a little awkward--goss felt somewhat like a replacement, trying to fill the gaping hole where feldspar used to be, trying to assume a different relationship that odie, initially, was not interested in. it also does not help that the eye incident was smack dab in the midst of all this.
(cut because this post is. yap heavy)
we will now tangent into this universe's eye incident for reasons that will be clear later. directly following feldspar's disappearance odie really was not doing well. they were just trained enough to think they could help, not nearly experienced enough to be allowed to, told to just stay home and.. what? see the way they were pitied? listen to the adults murmur about how their parent was dead, that it was their own damn fault they died up there, that it was just a matter of time before something went wrong, somebody'd said, when they didn't think odie would hear.

odie was grieving and trapped and angry. so so very angry. why couldn't they help? why couldn't they do the one damn thing they were throwing their life into? so they. uh. tried to steal a ship & search by themselves. this decision was interrupted by gossan, and they got into a verbal fight (rhodonite my stubborn "son" of a fish <33) things escalated when odie tried to just take the ship & leave anyway, in the following mess somebody grabbed the ship's controls, and Something exploded.
(this was later found to be a mix of user error and a faulty patch job from after prior crash during the search, done poorly because they were Wasting Time. the one time you rush your engineer....)
odie spent. a very long time trying to recover from this decision. they feel they're still not quite seen as trustworthy in their mentors' eyes, even if they've very much grown and matured since this. there's some mistakes that're hard to fix, and sometimes you can get real wrapped up in repentance. they've been forgiven, mostly, even if gossan hasn't fully articulated that (ohhhh founders communication issues <3 this is the same communication issues that fuel the gosslate divorce both here & in rhode's timeline). it's a weird Thing and still hovering around every interaction they have.
leading up to all that, the founders were stressed out of their bloody minds & barely keeping it together themselves. hornfels was so focused on trying to run everything & not get anyone else majorly hurt & ignore the festering gaping wound in their chest where feldspar should be. they especially were trying to keep odie out of the search because they.. they really did not want odie to be there if they did find something. if things did go wrong out there. gossan is trying to be Responsible and hold things together which includes "make sure your best friends' kid doesn't die in space". could they have responded better? talked odie down? maybe! unfortunately everyone is stressed and upset and making baddd decisions. welcome to doubling time: bad decisions central.
now!! present day doubling time. this whole backstory becomes a certified Problem as rhode gets deeper into investigating & spirals more.
like imagine your kid comes back from space and they're. they're acting weird. they're on edge and stressed and forgetting things and that just keeps getting worse & worse. clearly something's wrong but you don't know how to help and they're not explaining and are acting like they're hiding something and are ignoring basic protocols to their own detriment.
as they see "odie" acting so weirdly secretive & stressed & afraid, the first thought is something of a "what if it Happens Again?" the last time they made Decisions in that mental state things went to shit and the idea of them getting themselves hurt is. not great. they probably should not be in a spaceship right now. thus leading to hornfels & gossan's decision that "odie" is grounded, effective immediately, due to medical concerns. rhode takes this extraordinarily poorly <3 their ship is really the only comfortable place left the only remnant of the world they knew (it jumped universes with them <3 we love you ship that I still need to name) and losing access to it is an absolute nightmare for them. how can they explore how can they understand anything if they don't even have that?
the mystery deepens a few cycles later, when marl approaches gossan, saying they.. just saw odie? still partially suited up, looking exhausted, saying they just landed? what?? the fuck?? they hear that odie ("odie"?? they don't know!!) ran off, searching for.. something? someone? the "odie" who's been here?? unclear! before they can track odie down and get any answers, they find out that Somebody just took off from timber hearth. oh no! meanwhile, hornfels heads back to the observatory in time to watch odie's signal vanish into dark bramble (they. shouldn't be flying. they're grounded their ship shouldn't be flyable right now. shit. fuck.). it's maybe half a loop worth of stress before it reappears, landing just at the crater's edge.
it's. a really strange time after that. unfortunately the combo of "feldspar is Alive and Here" + "there's Two Rhodonites" + ""real" odie was On The Moon and met A Living Nomai" is. a bit difficult to process. how do you even begin to. like. wrap your head around all that. odie is so so tired and so glad to be home (they're so happy to see everyone again <3 it's a very confusing reunion for hornfels considering the last time they saw "odie" they were staunchly refusing to talk and now odie's like. damn near tackle hugging them & saying they missed them so bad and they're maybe tired of space for a bit. marl and hal also get the aggressively affectionate greeting. their friends!! they get to see them!! yay!! hell even gossan gets a relieved greeting) but also. yk. the rhode shaped elephant in the room. it's a lot of weird confusion as two rhodonites are seen in the same space, very unsettling initially.
cause like obviously it's Weird seeing your hatchling act so different to how they were literally earlier today, they're talking about things that don't make sense if they were here and-- that's.. that's not the one that's been here. the one that's been here is lingering awkwardly behind them looking like they're about to be thrown into the ghost matter pit. if this is your odie your hatchling then.. who the fuck is that? what are they? why do they have their face? difficult things to get over I fear.
so yeah nobody's really sure what to do about them initially, rhode frankly has no idea what to do with themselves considering they straight up don't go here. lots of untangling of identities to be done as rhode is slowly coaxed into actually opening up. it's almost a little bit like how sol showing up would be handled in my postloop. you have to try and put aside the confusion and the fear and the uncertainty to give them any kind of space to be a person. they're so obviously unmoored and afraid and don't know what to do. and stars they have your hatchling's face (and maybe that isn't malice maybe it isn't choice) you can't watch them look like something terrible is going to happen to them because of all this.
it's... a slow process, getting to actually know rhode, making sense of what really happened all those months ago, what's been happening. unfortunately I am. low on thoughts regarding that. and this post is so very long.
(side note also like. in general with this au the idea of being caught as a "fraud" the one who was "caught" in the act is like. so visceral to me. might be the transgender. and the autism. something about being the wrong one the one who shouldn't be here who's wearing a false face. something about technically being that person but not in a way that you "should" be. don't look too hard at why that motif of identity keeps cropping up in my writing don't do it don't look at the ghost of who I was expected to become they live in poetry only)
huge fan of when characters love each other and are closely bonded in an explicitly nonromantic way. however āļø i am very much not a huge fan of what happens when characters like this are introduced to fandom
people hated my other post about this but idc it needs to be said, but in your obsession with making platonic relationships into romance there is very much a loss of the depth that actually makes the original relationship interesting. and i feel like this is in part due to the idea of a relationship hierarchy and romance being "more than just friends" framing it as something added on top of an already existing relationship making it somehow inherently deeper and more meaningful, when in actuality romantic relationships and platonic relationships are just different relationships of equal importance with no difference in depth or meaning. romantic relationships can be shallow and fleeting or deep and lifelong and so can platonic ones. neither one is more important or better than the other and they aren't interchangeable either. if you change the relationship you are inherently altering the character dynamic and this is often not a good thing
āAh sorry Iām just dumbā (having ADHD my whole life has meant that Iāve been criticised heavily for making mistakes that come part and parcel with the condition. Even the people I love most in the world have chastised me for mistakes that I spend much of my life worrying about and trying to avoid. Itās much easier to tell you Iām just a silly guy than explain to you that no matter how much effort, how much thought, how much stress I put into avoiding these same mistakes, I will keep making them over and over again. My brain is structurally built to thwart me throughout it all.)

Like it says on the tin, this document is a very simplified checklist / tutorial on how to turn off (generative) AI BS, improve your privacy, and protect your data (as much as you can, in this day and age) across specific platforms / devices.
Even if you're someone who's normally pretty on top of these things, I still recommend taking a look at your settings, especially if you use Google or Gmail. You'd be surprised what kinds of things are automatically turned on.
