I am totally in LOVE with the cover for my new zine Bear Escapes, designed by the incredibly talented @spacejays!! Sam was super easy to work with and made the whole process really fun. I definitely recommend them for art commissions or design projects!
Bear Escapes is a sweet, weird fairy tale about a dancing bear and an organ-grinding monkey who escape from the circus, inspired by the Joanna Newsom song “Monkey and Bear.” I haven’t released a zine since since 2017 and I’m doing things a little differently with this one. Bear Escapes will be released as a limited-edition print zine based on the number of people who pre-order. Each zine will be numbered and hand-mailed by me directly to you. It’s unlikely that I will do a second printing so get your name on the list so you don’t miss out! Official release date has yet to be set, but I’m aiming for October 2020.

Hope you don’t mind my posting this as a way of saying that I’m always keeping an eye out for blogs who like the same things I do, so don’t be shy! I may not be able to get around to everyone, y’all are so kind and I’m just a terrible recluse but I do enjoy poking around here when I can :>
So let’s just say I got a quick idea and then went way overboard. The result being this SU/ATLA AU, or half-crossover, or fusion of some variety! I’m positive that I’m not the first one to do this, but still wanted to try my hand at it without any cross-contamination. I haven’t gone seeking out anybody else’s versions yet, apologies if I’m stepping on any toes but I hope my take is welcome here!! You can tell I had a lot of fun with this, I’ll explain the basis for anyone who’s interested/confused.
This started from my love of both series but isn’t a true crossover either, more like The Last Airbender-flavoured Steven Universe. The characters are all from SU, sticking to their original personalities but with deviations arising in their backstories (and slight clothing redesign to match). But before anyone asks, they are not meant to directly replacing any single ATLA character!
While it’s fun to draw certain parallels--which is pretty much the whole point of this--it’s clear that there is no perfect equivalent here. If we go any further beyond this scene the SU characters would end up acting very different than the originals, stepping out of some roles and straying into others.
So this is how I imagine Steven and the rest would act if they appeared in a plot similar to The Last Airbender, but with some wonky worldbuilding that lands somewhere between the two.... In which I may have gone much deeper than I intended. To be clear, this isn’t some full-fledged AU, just an idea on the side! For now I’ll keep running with it between other things, but let me know if you have any thoughts in the meantime :)
Since it slipped my mind to actually make a public update, I wanted to thank everyone who entered the giveaway over the weekend!! The two winners have been notified and confirmed their commissions, so the contest is officially closed. While working on those first, I’ve also got more SU and SPOP pieces on the way when time permits! There are a few larger projects I have in mind, but for now here’s a messy WIP...
With that I’ll quit with the annoying updates for the time being (but if things ever get too quiet here I usually save my spam for my sideblog)!
So I admit I didn’t have anything prepared for milestones because I wasn’t expecting—well. I’ll just say a big thank you again to my 250(!!!) followers, as well as anyone who liked, reblogged, commented, and appreciated my work in any way! Even if that might not seem too large in the grand scheme of the internet, it means a ton to me that so many of you would decide to stick around and I’m truly grateful.
I don’t know if anybody would be open to an art giveaway of sorts? But I’m going ahead anyway, so it’s too late to stop me now! Details are below the cut, and thanks again to everyone who has supported me thus far :)
Every note on this post (likes and reblogs included) counts as an entry. I’ll DM 2 winners in 2 days (Sunday around 8 p.m. eastern, with 24 hours to get back to me and accept the prize!) If the random generator lands in your favour, you can choose to request one of two things:
a) a full-body colour drawing of one (1) character of your choice, and yes that includes OCs! I’ll need a reference image and will take any pose requests into consideration, but since it’s not a paid work I won’t be checking in throughout the drawing process. So make sure to choose wisely! (and as always, subject matter must be SFW)
b) a simple comic or sequential art story of your choice! One full page at max, number of panels is up to you. This will be an uncoloured sketch of comparable style to my doodles above, but I’ll be willing to add background elements and multiple characters!
You can give me any level of information to start with... have an exact scenario in mind, down to the layout and speech? Perfect! Want to provide a short prompt and let me fill in the rest? Sure thing, but it’s preferable if I’m familiar with the characters from a fandom I already know. Otherwise it’ll be up to you to fill me in; doesn’t have to be a 10-page typed essay, but I doubt you want to see what I come up with after a 30-second google search (unless that’s what you want??)
And since I realize I never mentioned it before, I am also a fan of Good Omens, The Last Airbender, and am a novice at D&D, so there’s a good chance I’ll be making my own art for these at some point! If there are followers who are only here for a specific fandom then fear not, I always get back around to my main interests and I haven’t finished with anything just yet. But I do try to tag everything in case you tire of the inconsistent content, so let me know if there’s anything I miss!
I know this only a small way of reaching out to a larger number of people, but I would still love to interact with any of you who may have been hesitant (assuming the public sentiment isn’t to just shut up and draw, but I guess this is the way to find out!) My ask box and DM’s are open to anyone who wants to chat, as well as if I neglected to mention anything about the contest.
Also a visual representation of what She-Ra did to my life upon discovering it the last month. I adore this ship (pun intended) and drawing these two is practically catharsis! Hope I’ll get to draw more for this fandom soon, it won’t be hard when practically every character is my favourite...
Another one of my interpretations of the SUF finale, because I love this gosh darn episode so much apparently! Also a good excuse to work on my illustration of environments and dramatic scenes, dunno if this one worked out too well in terms of clarity though. I’m putting it down for now because I’m proud of it otherwise, but critique is welcome!
