FIRST PLACE: darry curtis!! • this is self-explanatory!! he’s a big guy - all the more arms to squeeze you with. very comforting and grounding hugs, like a hug from your dad. i had a dream about hugging him and it was wonderful, so maybe im biased, but a bear hug from darry would probably make me calm down instantly.

SECOND PLACE: soda curtis!! • soda is very understanding and a sweetheart ❤️. he probably enjoys hugging people the most out of the gang. he can read the mood of the hug perfectly and never holds on for too long or too little! he always knows how to cheer you up.

THIRD PLACE: two-bit mathews!! • two-bit’s hugs aren’t usually long or emotional. it’s a one-armed short squeeze as you’re walking down the sidewalk, maybe he ruffles your hair. they’re friendly hugs that somehow always make you feel completely welcome. only downside is he sometimes smells like beer 😅.

FOURTH PLACE: dally winston!! • he would be mortified to be anything but last place on this list, but honestly, dally’s hugs aren’t that bad! they sort of feel like prizes - like if he dares to get that close, you’ve really accomplished something. of course, he only does anything close to a hug about once in a blue moon. they’re always lightning-fast, one-armed, and most of the time you get poked with a blade sticking out of his jacket pocket, but their infrequency only makes them more meaningful!

FIFTH PLACE: ponyboy curtis!! • pony is more used to being the hug-ee than the hugger. if you’re sad, he sometimes tries to cheer you up with a hug, but he’s always been better with words. his hugs are kind of awkward and clunky because he second-guesses himself while he’s doing it, but he means well!

SIXTH PLACE: johnny cade!! • johnny is similar to ponyboy in the way he is never quite sure if a hug is the right remedy when you’re upset. he knows all too well that sometimes well-meaning physical touch only makes things worse! when he is bold enough to do it, his hugs are soft, loose, and gentle, if not a little tense. when you’re lying in the lot together and he’s feeling especially relaxed or sleepy, he might pull you in to keep warm. they’re never sudden and he never squeezes too tight. but he’s not big on touch unless it’s with his closest friends (even then he jumps most of the time), and it takes a while to get to know him, so his overall aloofness puts him this low on the list.

LAST PLACE: steve randle!! • steve simply doesn’t like hugs. he’s not big on touchy-feely stuff anyway (unless it’s soda-). besides, most of the time he’s kind of dirty - motor oil, chocolate cake, etc. we’ve all seen he’s a bit of a messy eater. i love steve, but i can’t see him as a big hugger.
