My baby actually my sweet sweet lillyyyy
Bro I HATE when people dog on Ponyboy for being biased and describing the Socs as prissy rich kids with no problems
Like DUH
This kid is fourteen. His parents are dead, his oldest brother works two jobs and his other brother dropped out just so they wouldn’t all go under. The first THREE PAGES of the book is him getting jumped with a sharp object (I can’t remember exactly what it was) to his NECK. HE’S FOURTEEN. And the next time he’s jumped, he’s BEING DROWNED. All by the Socs
So YEAH, I think he has a right to be angry and biased. Also, HE’S A KID. A fourteen year old in that kind of situation and mental space (remember, routine threats by the Socs, smoking at such a young age at the capacity he did, etc.) won’t look at kids richer than him that (in his mind) do everything in their power to make his and his friends lives miserable with nuance and understanding. NO. He’s GOING TO BE ANGRY. And he has every right to be, in my opinion
Sorry for the mini rant
Pony calls Johnny honeybee. Send post
this can go to two duos thats fine
hmm
baby steve who's young enough that his mama is still around, whose dad has always been a deadbeat, who watches his mama get mistreated by his dad every night when the man gets home from work or from drinking.
baby steve who starts to try and raise his voice and fight back like the action heroes he watches when he goes to the curtises to watch cartoons, whose mama always hurriedly sweeps him behind her skirt or urges him to go to his room when things get bad.
baby steve who wakes up one night at some ungodly hour to his mama sitting on the end of his bed crying. she's dressed in her long tan coat that she wears when they go travelling and she looks like an angel. he crawls into her lap and hugs her so tight. she whispers that she loves him and that she's sorry, but he's already asleep.
baby steve finding out the next morning that she's gone and she isn't coming back.
steve growing up wishing he could have gone with her, but never resenting her. steve growing up wishing he was strong enough, big enough, brave enough to save his mama. maybe then she would have stayed. maybe then his dad wouldn't treat him like shit.
canon-age steve who flinches every time a bottle breaks against a wall or a curse is screamed in his direction, but who thinks it's better him than her. canon-age steve who will never ever get over the fact that he couldn't save his mama but he can at least grow into being what he couldn't be. canon-age steve who is mean and who fights and who has learned to be the way he is because of how he grew up, because now he's big and strong enough to fight back.
ponyboy who goes to sodapop after his first break up all teary eyed, heartbroken too because he thought this person and him were going to last, and sodapop who holds him in the same way their mother did to him in the same scenario whilst he cried
and post
in 2026, remember how GOOD writing feels. remember how satsfying it is to get your characters to the point you have been dying to get to, where they will experience the love, fear, relief or whatever the feeling you want to bring to life may be. let this year be the year of writing, prgress and of satisfactory endings.

The book count rises…
This is a heinemann new windmills print 1996 if I’m not mistaken
Seems to have been a library book at “skinners’ company girls school”
There is a note in the back of the book saying “Marsha, Marsha you silly little girl”
Very interesting
I really like this cover and it makes me think a lot of Sam Emerson from the lost boys with the color choices.
I’m not exactly sure who the people on the front are supposed to be but let me know what you think!!!
I feel like, if Johnny had lived but still ended up disabled, in the scenario that Johnny gets a custom wheelchair (cant be bothered to look up whether that was a thing back then or the price), Pony would be with him at the lot whenever he learns new tricks and Johnny would always show Pony (and on occasion Dally) his new tricks first
i should Draw This

Omg plz do i wanna see Johnny doing wheelies so bad
Steve never hated Ponyboy. Sure the kid could be annoying and Steve wasn't good at being kind around anyone other than Soda, but he didn’t hate the boy.
They had grown up together, ever since he had first met Sodapop, ever since he found refuge in the Curtis home with Soda and Darry and baby Ponyboy and mr and mrs Curtis. Ponyboy was like a really irritating little brother to him. He'd never say it, but he cared.
So when Ponyboy was in the passenger seat of his car on the way back from school—Steve often picked him up, what with Two-Bit skipping so often—and Steve heard him mumble about being stuck with him he frowned.
"Ya got a problem wit' me pickin' ya up?" He asked, glancing at Pony.
Pony clenched his jaw and looked out the window. "You don't have ta bring me home. I know you don't wanna." He grumbled.
Steve's brows deepend. He kept his eyes on the road, keeping himself from staring at Ponyboy like he had grown a second head. What was he on about? Where had he gotten the idea that Steve was doing this for any reason other than the fact he had chosen to? Did he think Sodapop was forcing him or something?
"What are ya talkin' 'bout?" He asked.
"Don't play dumb. I know ya hate me. Soda's gotta force ya to play nice but I know."
That's when it dawned on Steve. Ponyboy really did think he hated him.
He was silent for a long time, driving more so on autopilot now as he pondered on how he could show Pony he cared. He didn’t want to go the full five yards with all the words from the heart bullshit. That wasn't how he was. Steve Randle was tuff and he had to play the part, even in front of the gang.
It took until they turned onto the street the Curtis house was on for Steve to figure it out.
He parked the car and locked the doors so Pony couldn't get out just yet. Ponyboy glared at him when the car door didn't budge.
"Ponyboy, I wanna talk to ya." Steve said, forcing his features to soften. He was tryna show he cared, not look angry. For once, he had to show at least a little vulnerability.
With a shrug, Ponyboy leaned back in his chair, staring ahead of him.
"Ya know I drive ya home by choice, right?"
No answer.
Steve sighed. "Ya might not remember this, but when you was small, and me n' Soda was just friends back in grade school, Soda got jumped by a couple o' Socs." They had been much bigger than Soda, and Steve had been with Darry and Pony when they found him crumpled up on the ground in the lot once those no good Socs were done with him. He had been so small and they couldn't have even really known much about the Greaser versus Soc rivalry just yet.
"Yer Ma and Pa brought him to the clinic n' you n' Darry had to stay home." Steve continued, watching closely as Ponyboy began to turn to him, listening to him talk. "Darry was scared outa his mind. You was too."
Steve remembered so clearly how small and scared Ponyboy had looked then. Eyes filled with tears, ready to bawl, asking about Soda while Darry paced.
"I asked ya if you was ok." Steve said, "And ya just started bawling." He hadn’t known what to do. He didn’t have a kid sibling of his own, he didn’t have any experience comforting people. Not really. But he remembered that Mrs. Curtis would always bring him into a tight hug whenever his father got to harsh with him and he'd hoped it would be the right thing to do for Pony too. "I picked ya up, hugged ya 'n everythin'. And you just bawled, saying Soda's name over 'n over again." With a small smile, Steve looked at Ponyboy.
He was older now. He still bawled but less than when he was a little kid. He still had the same big, almost pleading grey-green eyes and Steve could see his face softening as he took in Steve's words.
"Ya ended up falling asleep on me."
Ponyboy just stared. He didn't say anything, didn't scoff disbelievingly. He just kept his eyes fixed on Steve, confused.
Steve cleared his throat. "What I mean to say is I don't hate ya, Pony." He said, awkwardly. "You're like a annoyin' kid brother, but a kid brother all the same. My kid brother, blood or not."
For a moment, there was only silence in the car. Steve almost expected Ponyboy to try to leave again, even though the doors were still locked shut. But instead, he reached over the middle console and—
Hugged Steve.
He brought his arms up to wrap around Steve, hugging him for the first time since he was itty bitty. He was reminded of Mrs. Curtis' hugs, and Soda's. Warm, and tight in a way that made you feel grounded instead of trapped. Pony's hugs were like that, but a little awkward given both the console in the middle of them and the fact Steve wasn’t exactly known for his affectionate side.
Hesitantly, Steve brought his own arms up to wrap around the younger boy in turn.
@wearingpants look at what you've done to me

i like to imagine that ponyboy (before his paper is due) experiments with different writing mediums to tell his story. hence the outsiders book, musical, and screenplay. in every medium he loses johnny and hates himself so much that he makes sure that all of his written pieces gets famous so everyone sees how 'horrible' he is. hes so guilty that he immortalizes the story, the shame and the dread he feels for johnny (and dally) through the musical, book, and movie. hes punishing himself as he gives his story a life of its own. thats just me imagining tho idk cause obviously se hinton wrote it but its an interesting thing to think about
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TWO-BIT DON'T JUMP AND DALLY DON'T TELL YOUR BOYFRIEND TO DO A FLIP
He tellin him to khs
