flower urchins are such fanciful magical looking animals and the most whimsical part of all has to be the part where if you touch those pretty little cups you die horribly

Bottle rocket under ice
radÂ
Iâm pretty sure that the reason the ice fractured into six slices is the same reason snowflakes are often six sided and it has to do with the shape of a molecule of water and I just think thatâs so freaking cool.
How would it even stay lit though?
!!!!! it IS actually because of the structure of water molecules! Water molecules are fuckin weird, as are lots of other liquid substance molecules, because theyre shaped like fuckin HEXAGONS! hexagons are those weird, six-sided shapes that re very sturdy, but they dont tend to sit very well when stacked together. thats why, when you fill up a glass of water to its full capacity, it can go OVER the brim a little and not spill over. Itâs also why water beads.
anyway, so since water is essentially made up of a gazillion little hexagons, it tends to gather into larger hexagons as it shapes together. this is not visible unless the water is in a solid form, aka ice. when the water is split, it tends to crack around the established hexagons. that bottle rocket exploded in the PERFECT place to show this phenomenon and its geeking me out.
ALSO! the bottle rocket stays lit because the fuse was definitely waterproof and made with magnesium and an oxidizer of some sort. this means that they will burn underwater because they dont need the oxygen from the air to stay lit. thats so fucking weird isnt it. im tipsy and its the 4th of july. sorry for the science haha

You have to admire her audacity, if nothing else.
Literally my favourite thing about Rogue One is that it makes the opening of New Hope so funny. Like, Vader has followed Leia from a planet he just blew up seconds ago and pursued her across the galaxy and then sheâs just like:Â âIâm on a diplomatic mission to Alderaanâ
Vader: Youâre a rebel. I just had a fight with your entire rebel fleet and followed you here. Straight from the rebels. Of which you are a part
Leia: *dramatic gasp* rebel? Me???  I was just passing through. Diplomatically. Thought it was a five-space-ship pile-up or something going on thereâŚÂ
death star plans? on my alderaanian diplomatic mission? itâs more likely than you think
lmao
Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) is one of the best written characters and is a saint. Â She is a wonderful mother. Â You see that her son has a password for his fort. Â She remembered the password and respected his rules, and he trusts her with the password.
You see the pride she has in providing things her kids love despite her low income. Â âwhat kind of a mother canât afford markers?â Â You can tell itâs a struggle and that she wants the best for her kids. Â Will is missing a red crayon and not only is she is taking an interest in his art, she cant stand to see him limited.
I love she knew where Jonathan wanted to go to college since he was 6. Â My mom cant tell you things like that.
Sheâs over worked and underpaid but she takes the time to pay attention to her kids.
These scenes just break my heart and anchor her and us as the audience in her search for her missing son.

âParticularly prone to serious procrastination problems are children who grew up with unusually high expectations placed on themâŚor else they exhibited exceptional talents early on, and thereafter âaverageâ performances were met with concern and suspicion from parents and teachers.â
Holy SHIT
WELL THEN
Yep.
They actually tested me for a learning disability in high school because I was consistently failing math.
They discovered that I actually scored in the 80th percentile in that sort of learning.
Problem was, in every other subject, I was in the 99.8th percentile.
I had never learned how to study because I never needed toâand then, when something proved to be even the slightest bit challenging, my brain went
âLOL nope this is impossible abortâ
Meanwhile, this entire time Iâm scraping by in subjects like English. The assignments I did turn in, Iâd score top marksâbut Iâd avoid turning in projects I didnât think were âgoodâ enough.
Essentially, my brain had two settings: â100%â or â0%â.
This sort of Baby Genius shit makes kids and adolescents neurotic and self-destructive.
We learned about this in Child Development. And we learned to reward hard work and not good job. Like donât say to a child, âoh you are so smart.â Say âOh did worked so hard.â Be proud of the child, not the achievement.
Be proud of the child, not the achievement.
Decades of research have been done on this by Dr. Carol Dweck. When the emphasis is placed on effort (a factor people can control) rather than talent (an innate skill), itâs a lot easier to see mistakes as a learning opportunity rather than something you just wonât ever be good at. And kids who were encouraged by effort were also more willing to take on more challenging work and considered it a lot more fun, while the kids who were praised for their intelligence were reluctant to put themselves in a situation where they might lose that identifier as a âsmart kidâ by making mistakes, so they preferred to do work they were confident they could master. Also, the kids praised for effort wanted to compare their results to kids who got higher scores, to see where they made their mistakes, while those praised for intelligence wanted to compare their results to kids who scored lower, to reassure themselves.
Not only does this set up âsmartâ students for a lot of trouble when they enter college and start being regularly challenged, the effects last long beyond that. It can be very hard for the âyouâre so smart!â kids to unlearn as they become adults and struggle with even common adult things, and are afraid to ask for help because of that lesson they learned from misguided praise that they are supposed to be smart and supposed to know the answers.Â
âŚHonestly +1 here.  Itâs very well researched and documented and yeah.  Making the emphasis on âYou succeed and we are proud of you b/c you are SMART as an intrinsic quality!â makes failure/setbacks/difficulty -TERRIFYING- b/c if youâre âsmartâ it doesnât happen and if you fail that means youâre not smart and thatâs what everyoneâs drilled into you as your main point of worth.
And the rates of anxiety disorders among âgifted studentâ kids are kinda horrifying. Â Â
This is why âyouâre so smartâ means absolutely nothing to me any more. Itâs used as punishment as often as itâs used as praise.Â

Fake Service Dogs?
Youâre sitting at a cafe with your friend when suddenly a woman walks in with a toy poodle in her purse. The manager at the counter informs her âIâm sorry, but we do not allow dogsâ. She replies with a heavy sigh and a âSheâs a service dog. She can come with meâ. Not knowing much about service dog law, and worrying about getting sued for asking further questions, he sits this woman down at a booth. There, she promptly unzips her purse and places the dog on the booth seat next to her. When the womanâs food comes out, the little dog begs and she feeds her bits off her plate. This dog is not public access trained, and proceeds to bark at those who walk by. This dog is a nuisance and causes many in the restaurant to complain. The manager cannot do anything but inform the unhappy customers that this is a service dog, so he canât ask her to leave. In the end, itâs the customers who end up leaving.
Now I walk in with my highly trained service dog pressed against my leg in a perfect heel position, and Iâm quickly bombarded by the manager telling me âNo dogs! No dogs! We ALL know what happened last timeâ. Confused, I tell him âThis is my medical alert and medical response service dog. Her right to accompany me is protected under federal law.â With a sigh, he seats me at a table far away from others where my dog promptly tucks under my feet, out of sight. When my food arrives my dog is still tucked tightly under the table because she knows sheâs not supposed to eat when sheâs on duty. She stays there ignoring those who walk past for the remainder of my meal. When we leave, a woman by the door exclaims âWoah, I didnât know there was a dog here!â
See the difference?
Scenario number two occurs at a local grocery store when a man decides to bring his certified emotional support animal into the store with him. Upon entering he flashes a fancy ID card and certification papers. This dog is not as unruly as the first, but he still forges ahead of his handler, sniffs the food on display, and may seek attention from those who walk past. You find this dog adorable, and when he and his owner walk past you ask to pet him. The owner says yes and explains how all he had to do was go online, register his dog, and a few weeks later they sent him a vest, ID card, and certification papers.
Now I pull into the same grocery store. Iâm in a rush to get an ingredient for a dish Iâm making so I hurry into the store with my service dog next to me. Iâm quickly stopped by a manager who demands to see my service dogâs certification card. Remember, this is NOT required by law, and most real service dog teams donât have them. After 15 minutes of trying to educate, pulling up the ADA website on my phone, back and forth bickering, and drawing more of a crowd than I want to describe⌠Iâm finally allowed in. I grab my ingredient, stand in line (where my service dog obediently moves between my legs to make space for those around me), and I get bombarded by people asking to pet my dog. I explain that sheâs working, she has a very important job to do, and sheâs not allowed to be pet while on duty. People walk away grumbling and complaining about how rude I was when other handlers like the man they met earlier allow their dog to be pet.
Moral of the story? Fake service dogs create real problems. The ones who are impacted the most are the true service dog handlers who rely on their dogs every day to help mitigate their disability. How would you feel if everywhere you went, you couldnât make it 10 feet in the door because people were asking you questions? Imagine how much time that would take out of your already hectic day. Businesses lose customers because word gets out that there are unruly dogs in their store, customers become misinformed and start thinking some of these behaviors are okay, some people even start to believe the lies that anyone can just register their dog online and make him a service dog. The result? MORE fake service dogs. MORE real problems.
I will reblob this until I die because itâs one of the few things that constantly genuinely infuriates me
