On the topic of videogame romances; I can understand why some people would be put off by romance sim elements in a game like FF7,what with the whole "Aerith vs Tifa" debate.
Because Square do kinda play up the "love triangle" angle and maybe it feels like the game is just forcing you to pick and some people just don't wanna engage with that and have their own preferences, which is fine.
Like thats not something i'm into, but when people get unecessarily hostile/aggresive about shipping is when I tend to back away, and I see this with fans of both Aerith & Tifa.
It makes me wonder if some people would have a much more positive experience in fandom if they weren't so laser focused on just shipping and nothing else.
Personally, I wish the game gave you a path where Cloud could come to grips with having feelings for both Aerith and Tifa, and/or give him an option to let either one/both down gently. I don't like where your only options are "be an asshole to one of them for no reason" and "ostensibly lead one of them on." 😅
(To me, Cloud is a polyamorous man who doesn't know how to deal with that as a result of growing up in a society where healthy polyamory isn't a recognized, much less talked-about thing.)
I do think that a lot of misery comes from people taking unhealthy approaches to shipping. I think the biggest issue is when they think their preferred ship must objectively be the best, and that there must be something terribly wrong with any perceived rivals. So they distort the story and characters in their minds and come up with a bunch of complete nonsense, which is naturally going to lead to a lot of arguments once they start putting it out there in public spaces.
Another problem I see is people thinking that ships should be based on who "deserves" whom, as opposed to what you find interesting to think/write about. Like, it's fiction. The point of fiction is to explore things that interest you and/or serve the narrative. That's it. (Also, treating relationships as rewards instead of things that people sometimes decide to get into is pretty objectifying, if you think about it!)
So IMO, it's not that these people would be happier if they focused less on shipping; but rather that they'd be happier if they changed their fundamental views on shipping. Because the thing is, their unhealthy views are also going to come into things that aren't shipping. They'll be doing mental gymnastics trying to prove that so-and-so is the "real" villain of the story and getting super mad that so-and-so wasn't punished enough. And other such things that will make a bad time for everybody.
