Diasomniaâs normally gloomy atmosphere has a lighter vibe on orientation day. New students had been given their dorm garbs after being shown their sleeping quarters, and a party had commenced to welcome the incoming freshmen. Green and black banners adorn the halls, and food is bountiful in the common area. Students converse with others and bump into one another, smiling at the thought of starting a new school year at Night Raven College. The floor is covered in footprints, not a space going untouched by a student. That is, with the exception of a ring around Malleus, Lilia, Silver, and their favorite incoming freshman, Sebek.
âOf course Iâd be sorted into Diasomnia,â Sebekâs voice carries across the student lounge. âThey would not dare put me anywhere else!â
âYes, yes, Sebek,â Lilia smiles, his white canines flashing. âWe are all very proud of you.â
âI agree,â Malleus nods, lips forced into the tiniest hint of a grin.
âThank you, my Liege.â Sebek all but sparkles at the dragonâs words. âThank you, Lilia.â
âThat being said, now that youâre here,â the pink-haired man trails off, âwouldnât you want to mingle with some of your new dormmates?â
âWhy would I want to do that?â Sebek scans the crowd that has kept him on edge since entering the building. âI must keep my Liege safe from any of these humans.â
âPerhaps to make new friends?â Silver asks, standing by Liliaâs side.
Sebek looks at him with a hint of disgust. âWith these humans? I think not.â
âSpeaking of making new friendsâŠâ Lilia turns to look around the room. âWhere is⊠ah!â
Sebek watches as Liliaâs gaze stops at the top of the stairs. Following his line of sight, he sees no one. But, that is not uncommon for him. Lilia, a former military general, has always had better sight than Sebek despite being several hundred years older.Â
âMuerte, come join the fun! Meet your new dormmate!â The fae waves his hands compellingly at a figure that Sebek cannot yet see.
âFatherâŠâ Silver sighs, looking down at the man. âYou know theyâre not that great with friends.â
âNonsense, nonsense.â
âWho are youââ Sebek starts, only to be cut off by Lilia.
âShh, Sebek, youâll see shortly,â he puts a hand up.Â
Grumbling, he turns to watch the stairs once again. From the stairs, Sebek watches as a black-haired person wanders down from the top platform of the staircase. As they make their way down, people part around them. If Sebek didnât idolize Malleus as much as he does, he would say that her presence is almost as commanding as Malleusâs. As Muerte descends from the stairs, their eyes catch in the moonlight. Yellow eyes stare back at him, an unnerving presence that he does not welcome. Subconsciously, Sebek reaches for the sword attached to his sideâa custom part of his dorm uniform.
âDonât,â Silver whispers to the green-haired boy.
Sebek only deepens his frown in response.
As Muerte draws closer, Sebekâs heart pounds louder in his pointed ears.
âLilia,â she greets the man.
âMuerte!â he smiles, nudging her slightly. âCome, come, meet Sebek. He just got placed in Diasomnia.â
âMm,â they nod, looking the boy up and down.
âIntroduce yourself,â Sebek all but demands. âAnd greet my Liege! Your disrespect will not go unnoticed!â
Malleusâs sigh is quiet, and goes unnoticed by Sebekâs indignation.
Muerte does not respond to Sebekâs callout, and instead chooses to stare at him a while longer.
âWell? Have you nothing to say for yourself?â
âYouâre loud,â Muerte states, her voice cutting his next statement short.
âExcuse me?!â Sebekâs expression turns into one of bewilderment. âWell perhaps if you were not so quiet, you would find my tone to be perfectly normal! The loudest thing about you are those windchimes you call an earring!â
âAnyone would find you to be loud.â
âWhat did you say?â Sebek taunts. âI canât hear you!â
âI had said, âAnyone would find you loudâ,â Muerteâs voice raises, her usually silent and offputting demeanor turning into something more aggressive.Â
âDo not yell at me!â
âI wasnât yelling, but if you insist maybe Iâll start!â
The two start a yelling match, causing the large gap between the group and the rest of the student body to grow deeper. Words on the verge of insults are said, and if the other three didnât like those two as much as they do, the argument would have been curbed much sooner. As the three that arenât bickering watch Muerte and Sebek, Lilia canât help but snicker mischievously to Silver and Malleus.
âTheyâre going to be great friends,â he mutters to his two pseudo-sons.
âYou say that about everyone, Father,â Silver says between yawns.Â
âYes, yes, but when have I ever been wrong?â
âThat is very true,â Malleus nods. âLilia is typically right about relations.â
âJust trust me, Silver.â
âIf you say so,â he sighs, his body giving up and slouching forward to lean on the man he calls his father.
Several seconds later, Sebek huffs in frustration from arguing with Muerte.
âFather, this person is rather ill-mannered and quite honestly a pain,â he frowns, creases evident between his eyebrows and atop his forehead. âI do not understand how you put up with such a person.â
âAre you sure you arenât talking about yourself?â Muerte suggests, equally as annoyed with the green-haired boy.
âCome, come,â Lilia sighs. âYou two will learn to enjoy each otherâs company eventually.â
âSeems highly unlikely,â Sebek says as he crosses his arms.
All Lilia can do is smile and send a knowing look to Malleus.
