Distinguishing characters through fashion: how Sailor Moon does it right.
OKAY, so I was wondering whether I could find some place that posted Sailor MoonĀ screencaps or turnaround sheets so I could write about how it handles fashion, and it turns out thereās a website for exactly that. Tagged by character and everything. Perfect.
So letās continue our discussion about fashion as character design! Hereās a narrative that has to balance a large, female-heavy cast and make sure they are identifiable at all times, especially since they arenāt in their trademark color-coded uniforms most of the time. How doesĀ Sailor Moon tackle fashion and make it work in service of their characters?
Whatās particularly impressive is that the superheroesā civilian clothes arenāt limited to a single color, the way you might see in, say,Ā Power Rangers.Ā (Could you imagine wearing yellow outfits every day for the rest of your life just because youāre the Yellow Ranger? Blugh.) Instead, Sailor Scouts are recognizable in their civilian clothes because each one has a distinct silhouette, style, and palette.
Sailor Moonās civilian wear, for example, is overly childish and girly. She wears ribbons, bows, and overalls. Her clothes have cartoon mascots on them, particularly bunnies (a pun on her Japanese name, Usagi, which means ārabbit.ā)TheyĀ match her ditzy, immature personality.
Mercuryās modest skirts and pastel cardigansĀ match her quiet, straight-laced character, while Mars wears shorter, sleeker, more ladylike outfits that reflects her more sassy (and bossy) personality. Venus is all about bright colors and loose, sporty dresses ācause sheās got such a peppy, can-do attitude.
Jupiter is easy to distinguish from the others just by being taller and more physically imposing. I love the way they handle Jupiterās style because sheās portrayed as a gentle, feminine girl who is still undeniably āthe muscleā of the group. Her clothes are girly (frills! pencil skirts!) but theyāreĀ cut to accentuate her fuller figure and keep her looking large and powerful. I love that.
A lot of the charactersā fashions work well in pairs to contrast and work off of each other. Mini-Moonās pink, blue, and candy-stripe-red palette doesnāt pop quite so much until sheās juxtaposed with her friend Hotaru, who dresses in black and dull monochromes. Whatās more, as their friendship grows, you can see Hotaru start accenting her dark outfits with a single bright color.
And, of course, Uranus and Neptuneās amazing butch/femme combo.
Look at those classy broads.

I think the most painful mistake for me to watch artists make isĀ āsketchingā digital lineart.
Like the way to get nice smooth lines in digital art is to do quick flicks and to become VERY friendly with Ctrl+Z, but instead Iāll see peopleĀ āsketchā their lines, where itās this scribbly back and forth motion, or theyāll try to draw lines slowly like you do with traditional art, so their lines end up very wobbly and wiggly because digital art is very different from traditional art! Digital lines donāt work the way actual pens do.
Example:Ā
And itās a mistake Iāve made as an artist. Itās a mistake I think every artist starting digital art makes, but like ohhh thatās why itās so painful to watch.
Tip for digital artists? Learn to do fast quick flicks of the wrist for your lines. Itāll be hard at first, especially if youāre used to traditional art, but just remember that Ctrl+Z is your friend. Learn how to quickly Undo lines that donāt look the way you want them and just get used to that quick flick. Thatās how I do my art now, and I believe my art looks much better for it.
@my underage followers do not date anyone over 18. like itās different if youāre 17 and theyāre barely 18 and youāll both be 18 soon (given that youāve been dating for a while of course)
but like example if youāre 15 and your partner just turned 18 like⦠thatās a big age difference. itās just 3 years but the difference in maturity is HUGE. like i myself as a 15 y/o was nations away from where I am now as an 18 y/o
never let anyone tell you ālove has no ageā, and never bend to threats. your comfort zone matters and you deserve someone your own age. question why an 18+ year old would want to date a minor

DEAR DIGITAL ARTISTS
This is NOT okay, do ya`ll see how small and brittle the new nibs are?? I usually only draw in weekends (I don`t press hard either) and now I have to change them every 3 weeks.Ā
Complain. Tell them this isn`t okay. Don`t let big companies rob artists because they have the most reliable products.Ā
Wacom`s website Wacom`s instagram
How do they expect people to be able to afford that? This is ridiculous.
Donāt just reblog this!!
Comment on their instagram!! Message them!!
By doing this, wacom makes digital artists spend almost 50 dollars every year compared to MAX 4 dollars every year on NIBS. This is so wasteful and not something everyone can afford. Wacom is just getting away with this and giving absolute bullshit excuses.
If you all wacom users want change, you gotta do something about it.

I still remember the feeling of absolute loneliness. To be standing in pitch darkness. With only the moon reflecting the ocean. The faint sound of music. And small waves shining from its bounce to the sky. It was comforting. To see my place in the world. So small. Yet alive.
Sometimes itās a nice reminder to see how much youāve improved. :)
