Once upon a time, in another universe. There are a little clown and a big bad bat wandering around in the darkness world together. Batman & The Joker -Â Kingdom of the Mad
Character designs for Gerard Wayâs concept of a six-issue Batman comic to be titled âKingdom of the Madâ that, despite being approved by the Vertigo imprint, was never actually written, although in 2018, DC produced a pair of collectible statuettes based upon Gerardâs Batman and Joker designs for the Batman Black & White line.Â
bonus: a possible cover design for the (once again, nonexistent) first issue, that would have been titled âRats.â
Way discussed his ideas for the comic on Twitter in 2013, describing his Batman as a vigilante who âhas ESP, can turn into a bat, and can see into the future.â Wayâs Batman also âeats rats.â Under this storyline, Albert is âthe leader of the Order of Hecate. Homeless knights that live under Gotham, who adopt Batman at 30 yrs old.â Although Way didnât come up with a drawing for Bruce Wayne, he did say that the design would have had a âhospital buzzcut.â Wayâs Joker was âthe youngest character in the book, about 19. A year or two younger than Robin.â Kingdom of the Mad Robin, by the way, would have been Dick Grayson.Â
Gerard stated that his favorite of the designs was Mr. Freeze, who âlike[d] to dress up as [his] dead wife in armor [he] sculpted out of scrap-metal from her car accident,â and that his least favorite design was Two-Face, who was "supposed to get a re-do,â although Way expressed fondness for the police uniform.Â
Way stated that there would have been no Harley Quinn in the book, but it would have included a âvery strangeâ Catwoman, with Way describing his concept for her as âvery âGrey Gardens.ââ Although Way said he had drawn a design for Catwoman, it was never posted on his Twitter.
Despite the concept having languished unused for roughly five years, Way posted images of the statuettes on his Instagram when they were released, and made this statement: âIt never seemed the right time in my life to write the book, as I feel you need to be in a very specific headspace to write Batman, but I am warming up to it again, and seeing these drawings brought to life as statues definitely inspired and helped. Maybe this can happen soon? Itâs definitely on my bucket list.â So perhaps there is hope for âKingdom of the Madâ yet.Â
