War Games Drabble

“Edward, you need to slow down. You won’t have anyone to play baseball with if you kill us all on the way there!” I shouted angrily from the back seat. I could feel the excitement emanating from him as he pushed the Volvo faster and faster along the highway.

“Oh come on! Bella! Loca! He can see way better than any of us, we’ll be just fine,” Ridoc chided from the other side of Violet. I could feel her shifting uncomfortably next to me in the middle seat of the shiny silver Volvo as we sped along the winding mountain road. We should have ridden with Esme, but Sawyer and Rhiannon get carsick easily, so we were stuck with my speed demon boyfriend.

Edward turned around to face me, maintaining the car’s speed. “Bella, we’ve been through this a thousand times. I won’t let anything hurt you, myself included. Besides, if we get into any real danger, we have an entire riot of dragons to help save us.” He chuckled to knowingly himself and he turned back to the road.

“I hate when you do that,” I muttered soft enough so only Edward would hear. He smirked at me through the rear view mirror.

“I’m just glad we’re actually going to get there in time to play some ball before it gets dark this time,” Xaden piped up from the front passenger seat. Of course he would side with Edward. What is it with boys wanting to go fast all the time? Don’t they realize we’re winding through a forest? That trees don’t move?

“Well if you wanted to get there so fast maybe you two should have just taken Sgaeyl instead of encouraging Edward to drive like we’re running from something,” Violet quipped from next to me. Xaden turned back to glare at her. We all knew the dragons hated Edward and kept from burning him and the rest of the Cullens only at the request of their riders. They didn’t trust any vampires for a second around their riders, vegetarians or not, and worried about them losing control and killing their riders or trying to turn them. It was a miracle their dragons even let them ride with us to the field, even if they were close overhead.

“How much longer to this field anyway? And why does it have to be so far away?” Ridoc asked, earning another dark glare from Xaden for asking again so soon.

Edward lightly chuckled again as we turned down a small forest road, the road barely wide enough for the Volvo. “You’ll understand when we start playing. Ask me if we’re there again in a couple of minutes.” He started to pick up speed quickly now, slicing through the forest like a silver bullet. I squeezed my eyes shut and a moment later I felt a cold hand squeeze mine. Violet was scared too. Xaden looked back at us, and I could have sworn I saw fleeting guilt in his eyes. They must be having another one of those weird thought conversations again. Maybe an argument?

Just as I was about to insist on walking the rest of the way, the trees started to thin and the field came into view. We drove right up to the edge of the treeline and Edward whipped the car around as he skidded to a stop, giving everyone a view of how large the field was. The view was fleeting as 3 gigantic dragons landed right in front of the Volvo, eyeing Edward and making sure their riders were still safe after sharing a car with a vampire.

Edward and Emmett had been talking about this game for weeks, ecstatic to finally have new competitors that actually had a chance of beating them at their favorite game.

My submission for ArtOrder’s Tiny Dragons project! This was made with my usual mess of watercolor, ink, and colored pencil on 8x8″ hotpress watercolor paper…this time I really tried to pin down the value structure of the whole piece, and I’m feeling good about that aspect of it. :D

Hi Tumblr, its been a few years. Me and my artist friends animated this ENTIRE TOURNAMENT for you guys and the video is under performing because it has ‘SEXY’ in the title.  Care to share it around?

@milksolid​ I am DELIGHTED that you said this because it was the perfect excuse to talk about how much crocodilians love to play. As a whole, the group has an amazing sense of play, and what’s more, their play is even sometimes social, which isn’t common in reptiles at all! Crocodilians will give each other rides for no apparent reason. This is observed in creche-mates (hatchlings around the same size, not always from the same parents) as well as in adults! Rides can be part of courtship but are also observed outside of courtship behavior. Sometimes it’s just fun to get a ride from your buddy.

(Social play isn’t limited to crocodilians- turtles will also play with each other, and so will some species of juvenile lizards. In The Secret Social Lives of Reptiles, the authors explain that social play might be important in territorial species that hatch communally because it lets them explore boundaries and social behavior.)

Crocodilians are also known for how much they enjoy novel objects. In Vladimir Dinets 2015 study on play behavior in crocodilians, he noted that they like to play with streams of water and flowers that fall into the water they’re swimming in. They especially love pink flowers and will ignore other floating objects to specifically find the pink ones and push them around or carry them on their noses.

Locomotor play is also seen in crocodilians, which is really neat because as ectotherms (cold-blooded animals), they typically conserve their energy for moving in bursts when capturing prey. But sometimes they’ll invest energy in movement that just seems to be for funsies- especially if they have the option to slide down a slope. Sliding has been seen in alligators and crocodiles, and in captive and wild animals. That one viral video of the Nile crocodile sliding down a slope? That’s play! He did that because it was fun!

Crocodilians often have a bad reputation- people think they’re mean, or that they’re mindless killing machines. But that’s not actually true! Yes, they are predators who deserve respect. No, they are not domesticated animals- you can’t treat them like dogs, that’s how your hand bitten off. No, you should not have one as a pet. But they are incredibly complex and have a really neat social intelligence that we’re only just now beginning to really understand. They play! They have paternal AND maternal investment! They have some really interesting communication! And yes, sometimes they just like to go down a slide.

If you want to know more about how much fun crocodilians have, in addition to the sources I linked, I highly recommend the book Dragon Songs by Vladimir Dinets. It’s an incredible look at the social customs of the world’s crocodilians– the guy went everywhere to study as many species as possible. Gordon Burghardt’s stuff in general is also good if you want to know more about the importance of play in animals!
