Big day for deranged evangelical freaks
I know, intellectually, that modern american christianity has absolutely nothing to do with the ideal concept of the church - but there is quite literally something in the bible about not doing this. Like this exact precise thing. This is an idol that is detracting worship from the lord.
wouldn't it be so cool if we built the golden calf from famous bible story "Don't Build The Golden Calf"
Cost of a passport: $160
Cost of an international flight: $500-1000
Sundry while traveling: $50-100
Cost of accommodation: $20 per night at a hostel if you’re aware hostels exist, $50-$10 per night at a hotel if you’re not
Food costs: experienced travelers $10, vacation on a budget $20, most people $50
The continental US is 3000 miles across. It’s 500 to 700 miles north to south. Each state has sovereignty and requires either air travel or a long drive to reach each other.
Why on EARTH would US citizens prioritize foreign affairs? Vienna and Amsterdam are closer than Atlanta and Chicago and easier to get to.
If you are in the South? Chicago is a foreign land.
I’m just sick of points like this being touted when the gerrymandered to hell and back corporate car and airplane lobbies running US transit has made Americans unable to get to members of their own country let alone across two different oceans or far enough from itself by car.
This a big land island and that’s by design.
I never fucking left Ukraine. I never, if not for the war, would have left my hometown for a long time. If I ever leave my country, it will cost me much more in time and money than to American, for the most countries in the world. Somehow, I did vote in my elections based on the respective candidates view of International politics
I don't think it's fair to say that US is designed to be uncaring about it's role in the world - because a) anything US is is designed by USians; b) USian international politics is not isolationist and never was; c) buddies you don't need to leave your state to be aware of what's going on and your role in it. You need just - go online, nowadays.
I dunno if Americans are provincial or what. But if you defend against this accusations with "yeah we don't give a shit and this is why" like. It's both doesn't add up and doesn't paint you guys in a better light.
I live on a fucking island that's the same size as the contiguous USA. A great many of us also never travel to other countries. "Oh well if we don't physically go somewhere then we can't remember it exists long enough to give it any consideration" are you a fucking toddler? Countries that have major roles in threatening the safety and welfare of other countries absolutely should be prioritising their behaviour towards those countries, and if your reasoning is "yeah well I'm never going to visit there because it's so far away, so why should I care what the foreign policies I voted for are doing to those places" then you are not the fucking good guy.
everytime I remember that lesbian couple that have a marble statue of the two of them embracing and sleeping on a bed together over where their graves will be because the artists didn’t believe they would be able to be married before they died, so what they couldn’t have in life they could have in death, I fucking breakdown
memorial to a marriage; patricia cronin
“on july 24th, 2011- the first day that same sex marriage was legal in new york state, particia cronin and deborah kass got married. that same year the marble ‘memorial to a marriage’ was replaced with a bronze version. rainwater pools in the space between their two sculpted bodies, and falling leaves catch on the metal in the autumn. the two women sleep peacefully through snow and ice, and the scorching days of summer. over time the hands of cemetery visitors will wear down the bronze, burnishing it into a smooth shine. one day this will mark the final resting place of the two women. and someday people will have to remember that there was a time, long ago, when this was a memorial to a marriage that two women never thought they’d have.”
- Caitlin Doughty, on the Death in the Afternoon podcast
For those curious:
Here’s the real-life couple in 2019 💖
happy 20th anniversary (nov 3, 2002) to patricia cronin’s marble sculpture that furthered art, advocacy, and lesbian breakdowns everywhere
I'm not learning to tailor my fucking clothes stop sending links. If they don't make clothes that fit I simply will not buy them. They should just sell clothes that fit. And if not I will continue to wear my sweatpants
