Camp Blue Side - Part One - Part Two - Part Three - Part Four
~~~~~~~
Itâs been a hard few days at Camp Blue Side. After the very humbling experience of having the LCT lay into you in front of Hoseok, youâve decided to let Mack take the reins on all future activities. Itâs helped you avoid conflict with Hoseok during team games.Â
Unfortunately, Mack had some kind of stomach issue this morning, so you are flying solo. Well mostly solo, you are under the watchful eye of Namjoon. Heâs checked in on you during every activity. Today, all three teams are on the field for a giant game of capture the flag. Namjoon is explaining the rules, in great detail, to all the campers.Â
âEach team will nominate one person to hide their flag, make sure itâs in a spot where it can be reached and defended.â Namjoon explains before passing out the colored flags.Â
Team Two nominates Matthew, who has made a speedy recovery from his injuries and is now back at all activities. Namjoon hands the green flag to Matthew who takes off to your teamâs allotted area to hide the flag. Then, all the teams gather at their respective bases before the game begins.Â
âThree, two, one, go!â Namjoon shouts and blows his whistle to announce the start of the game.Â
You watch carefully, a few feet away from the base, as your campers take their positions. Some are staying back to defend the flag, but most of them have run off to attempt to steal another teamâs.Â
âY/N! Y/N!â Jessica comes running up to you, calling for you.Â
âAre you okay?â You ask, crouching down to Jessicaâs eye level.Â
âHoseokâs team is cheating!â She wines.Â
âWhat are you talking about?â You ask, trying your absolute best to keep your cool. You havenât had to speak to him since the meeting, but your blood is starting to boil.Â
âThey hid their flag in a tree! I canât reach it!â She explains.Â
âIâll take care of it.â You reply.Â
Hoseok wants to win so badly that he would cheat. Doesnât this go against Camp Blue Side rules? Isnât this the kind of competitive bull shit that you just got scolded for? You march over to Hoseokâs teamâs base and look around for him.
âHey! Hoseok!â You shout when you see him leaning up against a tree.Â
âWhat?â He spits, walking to close the distance between you.
âI heard youâre cheating over here.âÂ
âExcuse me?â He replies. Out of the corner of your eye, you can see Namjoon and the Team Three leader running across the field to see whatâs going on.Â
âYouâre cheating! You canât put the flag in the tree!â You yell.
âStop yelling in front of the kids! Itâs not cheating!â He yells back.
âYes it is! The kids are supposed to be able to reach it, and Jessica couldnât reach it!â
âWell itâs not our fault that Jessica is shorter than the average kid!â Hoseok retorts.
âWhy canât you just play fair? You are ruining the summer!â You may be projecting a bit, retelling the things that you have been accused of the past few weeks.Â
âWhy are you being such a bitch?â He responds, clearly too heated to remember there are kids around. Namjoon tries to interject, but thereâs something spilling out of your mouth before you even realize it.Â
âWHY DIDNâT YOU EVER CALL ME?â You shout. Namjoon whips his head around to you and there is a chorus of gasping from the kids caught in the crossfire.Â
âI TRIED. YOU GAVE ME THE WRONG NUMBER!â
âWhat? No I didnât! You ghosted me!â You reply once again, but this time Namjoon steps between you and puts his hands up. But thereâs no point, the realization is starting to sink in.Â
Hoseok tried to call you. An image flashes in your mind, it takes you back to last summer. You hadnât swapped phone numbers yet. You didnât need to because you saw each other everyday. On the last day of camp, you thought it would be cute to write your number on his hand. But apparently you either wrote the wrong number or it smudged.Â
âOkay letâs have everyone return to their bases. Team One will adjust their flag and we will start again.â Namjoon says after a beat of silence and realization. âCan you two get yourselves under control?â He adds under his breath.Â
âYeah.â You and Hoseok reply in unison. He meets your eye and for the first time all summer, they look like the eyes you fell for last year. Soft, sweet, welcoming.Â
You canât quite focus during the rest of the game. Youâre really just processing the information youâve just learned. Once the game is finished (Team Three managed to grab Team Oneâs flag), the campers all head to their cabins to wash up for dinner. Hoseok is hanging back to collect the equipment, but since Mack is out today, you have to go with the kids back to the cabins.Â
âSo, youâre basically saying that he never ghosted you and youâve both been being stupid all summer?â Margo asks, mouth full of pizza.Â
âYes.â You confirm. The girls at the table are engrossed in their own conversations, so you and Margo can talk about the events of the day. She looks over your shoulder and across the Mess Hall to Hoseokâs table.Â
âSo, can yâall start dating now?â Margo questions.Â
âHe still has a girlfriend as far as I know, so no I donât think so.â You reply. The pizza on your plate doesnât seem very appetizing. You canât stop thinking about how one small mistake has messed things up so much. Misunderstanding or not, Hoseok has moved on already.Â
âHeâs coming over here.â Margo says, almost choking on her drink.Â
âWhat?â You gasp, but itâs too late. Hoseok has made an appearance at your table. He is standing, waiting for your attention.Â
âHey, could you meet me at the lake tonight? After lights out?â Hoseok whispers so the campers at the table canât hear it. The quiet tone of his voice sends a chill down your spine.Â
You canât form words, but you nod, agreeing to meet him later.Â
~~~~~~~
The sun sets, the lights go out, and you are exhausted. The anger that has been fueling you for the past few weeks has fizzled out. Youâre not sure what to expect from Hoseok at the lake. Probably an apology. You hope heâll apologize for being a dick to you and calling you a bitch.Â
Despite your heavy eyelids, you slip on your shoes and quietly leave your cabin. When you arrive at the edge of the beach, you can see Hoseok standing out by the waterâs edge. Heâs facing the lake, watching the last slivers of sunlight disappear. Crossing the sand, you close the gap between you and stand next to him.Â
âIâm sorry I called you a bitch.â He says.
âI forgive you.â You reply. You probably should offer up an apology of your own, but you get the feeling he has more to say when he turns to face you.Â
âI made her up.â He says. âI donât actually have a girlfriend back home. I just wanted to save face after finding out you gave me the wrong number. Or well, you know what I mean.â
âSo, youâre still single?â You ask.
âYeah, I am.â He replies.
You canât help the laughter that bursts out of you. Maybe itâs the only way your body can react to the mix of emotions and relief youâre feeling right now. Hoseok looks a little dumbfounded by your reaction, so you just decide to do the one thing youâve been dreaming about for the past year. You grab his face with both of your hands and lean in to kiss him.Â
It doesnât take long for Hoseok to catch up. He grabs your waist and pulls your body toward his and deepens the kiss. It has been a year since youâve felt his full lips pressed against yours, but somehow it feels like all that time is being erased.Â
Hoseokâs hand slips under your top, his fingers gently gracing your skin. His lips travel down the side of your face to your neck. You decide to throw caution to the wind and pull away to take off your top. Hoseok follows suit, taking off his shirt to reveal his toned stomach.Â
You lightly drag your finger nails down his stomach and he sucks in a breath. The action drives him to sit on the ground and to tug on your shorts. You follow him to lay on the sand. It wonât be fun to clean up later, but it doesnât matter. You need to feel his body against yours.Â
Before you can think about it, you are on top of him. Each of you exploring the otherâs body with your hands. Itâs familiar, but novel at the same time. Hoseok grabs your breast over the fabric of your sports bra and it sends a jolt to your core.Â
âIs this okay?â He asks, pulling away to catch his breath.
âYes, I want you so bad Hobi.â You reply, and heâs on you again. He pulls down your shorts, and discards them. His fingers trail your body from your belly button down to your pelvis. His touch gives you shivers and when he comes in contact with your wet slit, you gasp.Â
He circles your clit a few times, spreading the wetness around before he takes over with his tongue. Licking at your most sensitive spots. He sucks on your clit, making you moan loudly before he releases you.Â
âPlease, Hobi.â You urge. Hoseok pulls away, leaving you almost fully exposed on the beach. He returns quickly, now fully exposed himself.Â
âReady?â He asks, positioning himself over you. You nod frantically, body anticipating the feeling youâve been missing since last summer. Hoseok leans forward, teasing you with the tip of his hard cock. The moan you let out convinces him to slip it in just a little.Â
He continues slowly, painfully slow. When heâs almost all the way inside you, he pulls back again and begins to find his rhythm. Your arms are wrapped firmly around his body, pulling him as close as you can as he thrusts into you. The feeling is so full and so good that you clench around him. He groans and you know it wonât be long before youâre both climaxing.
As his rhythm begins to become uneven, you can tell heâs close. You drop your hand from his body and find your clit, helping yourself get there at the same time as him. He stops his hips and you can feel him cumming inside your throbbing pussy.Â
âHobi!â You call his name as youâre pushed over the edge. After giving you a moment to come down from your high, he pulls out of you and lays flat on his back. He pulls you over to lay against his muscular chest.Â
âThat was amazing.â He smiles.Â
âYeah it was.â You nod in agreement, still feeling the phantom motion of your bodies.
âI canât believe we could've been doing that all summer.â He laments, gently rubbing your back.
âWell weâve got the last three weeks of summer. Weâll just have to go back to Cabin 13 like we did last year. I do not like having sand in my crevices.âÂ
âOh hell no. We are never going anywhere near that place. Itâs haunted.â Hoseok replies.Â

Camp Blue Side - Part One - Part Two - Part Three - Part Four
~~~~~~~
How did it come to this?
You are walking slowly to the camp office where you will meet with Hoseok and the LCT. The two of you will likely be reprimanded, but could she fire you? Would she fire you halfway through camp? Sheâs had a stick up her ass all summer, but would she actually go as far to remove you from Team Two?
This isnât who you are, the yelling and screaming. But the competition, wanting to crush Hoseok, has affected you too much. Itâs affecting the kids too, and it honestly makes you sick. As you drag your feet to the meeting, the events of the past three weeks unfold clearly in your mind.
~~~~~~~
Kick Ball
âWho wants to beat Team One?!â You shout to a crowd of campers, and they cheer in response. Youâve got a great group of campers this year. Itâs still day one, so everyone is still pumped and not too tired to give it their all.
Jessica, an athletic 13 year old, is up to pitch the kickball to Team Oneâs first kicker. The anticipation builds as she finds her grip on the rubber ball. Hoseok is muttering something to his kicker, some kind of pep talk as he walks up to the plate.
âGreat pitch!â Mack yells as Jessica throws the ball down to home plate. Hoseokâs kicker strikes himself out and youâve never been so stoked to see a child fail to kick a ball. You wouldnât let them see it, but youâre beaming inside.
âYes! Great job Jessica!â You cheer from the sidelines.
âThatâs alright Braden, youâll get it next time buddy!â Hoseok comforts his kicker as he returns to the back of the line. You feel a little tug on your shirt and look behind you to see a short boy looking up at you. What is his name again?
âY/N, can I pitch in the next inning?â The scrawny boy asks. Jessica has already managed to strike someone out, taking her off the pitching mound would risk the game.
âWell, uh, champ, letâs see how Jessica does and then weâll decide, okay?â As the words come out of your mouth, you feel dirty. You know this isnât what camp is about.
But Jessica strikes out two more players from Hoseokâs team before they can score any points. Hoseok has his back turned to you, talking to his players, but Yeonjun looks frustrated already and that feels fucking great.
âLetâs keep it going! Who are my strong kickers?â You ask everyone, not addressing the camper in front of you again. The boy sulks away, and doesnât ask to pitch again.
~~~~~~~
Egg & Spoon Race
An American classic event, the egg and spoon race. It is simple, but by no means is it easy. Especially not when the spoons are held by uncoordinated children. Luckily, Seokjin protested the waste of real eggs and the kids are using ping pong balls instead. So at least there wonât be a huge mess.
The first week of camp is almost over and youâve had the chance to get to know your campers a little more. Currently they are taking turns running down the field with the spoon. They have to run down the field and come back to tag the next person in line. So far, they are pretty even with their opponents, Team One and Team Three.
âHey, Y/N, Jakobi said he doesnât want to do this activity, what should I do?â Mack asks.
Jakobi, poor Jakobi. He was the kid that you turned down for pitching in kickball earlier this week.
âIâll go talk to him.â You reply. He is standing out of the line of campers, and you jog over to him. âHey buddy, whatâs going on?â
âI donât want to play this game.â He sulks. âIâm not fast enough.â His explanation hits you in the chest. This is your fault, isnât it?
âThis game isnât about being fast! Itâs about having a steady hand.â You reply cheerfully.
âWhat do you mean?â He asks, looking up at you with his big brown eyes.
âHere, hold your hands out like this.â You put your hands out in front of you, and he follows suit. âSee, your hands are frozen, not moving at all! You wonât drop the egg, and thatâs more important than being fast.â
Jakobi, pleased with this response, gets back in line and waits for his turn to help the team. You hadnât been paying attention to the race for a few minutes, but it looks like your team has actually managed to pull ahead of Hoseokâs.
âAlright Jakobi! You got this!â You cheer as he gets tagged in. Jakobi begins walking down the field. Slowly. âMaybe a little faster, champ!â You cheer again.
âYou said I could go slow!â He stops in the middle of the field to talk to you.
âYou can, you can! Just keep going please.â You try to reassure him, but you know the smile isnât convincing.
âJa-kob-i. Ja-kob-i.â You begin chanting, and the rest of your team does as well. Jakobi, still walking at a slow pace, makes it to the end of the field without dropping the egg, now heâs just got to make it back.
Unfortunately, Hoseokâs team is now on their last few campers. You look over and see Hoseok grinning like a fool. Heâs pleased because he knows heâs going to win. You can feel the urge to scream at Jakobi to run, but before you do you lock eyes with him.
Heâs beaming.
âI didnât drop it!â Jakobi celebrates as he finally returns to his team and tags the next person in line.
âYou did a great job Jakobi!â You smile and give him a high-five. Your team may lose this game, but at least they all played.
Team Oneâs last player crosses the finish line, then Team Threeâs, then Team Twoâs. The winning team cheers gleefully, celebrating their victory. The campers disperse from todayâs Team Game and head to their cabins to get ready for dinner.
Hoseok is collecting the supplies from the game to return to the equipment. Your kids handed you the spoon and ping pong ball, so you have to hand it over to him. Heâs already walking toward you to gather the supplies.
Heâs wearing a white tank top and his beige bucket hat. Somehow he makes it look like high fashion. Just a few days into camp and heâs already gotten a tan. His golden skin glows in the sunlight.
âHey Y/N, great game.â He laughs, words dripping with sarcasm. You stop about five feet away from him and drop the spoon and ping pong ball on the grass before walking away. âCome on, donât be a sore loser.ââ
âDonât be a sore winner, Hobi.â
It stops you dead in your tracks. The nickname that you called him last summer just slipped out in your frustration. A lump forms in your throat, and before you can even think about what to do, your feet are running away from him.
~~~~~~~
The Prank
Early in the week, a few counselorâs decided to sneak into cabin 13. Of course Jimin and Jungkook were involved, along with the two female counselorâs theyâve been wooing. Seokjin told you that they were found out because they ran screaming from the cabin after they saw a ghost.
Cabin 13, the long abandoned cabin at the edge of camp, has been used for smoking weed, secret rendezvous, and pranks. Officially, itâs on standby in case the infirmary fills up or if something contagious breaks out.
Several times last summer, you and Hoseok snuck out about a couple hours after lights out to chill and smoke weed. The weed he brought to camp wasnât very strong, so it really just took the edge of things. The conversations you had there are what cemented your romance. He loved to talk about the stars and what lies beyond them, and it filled the air with mystery.
âGuys, guys! Guess what!â Ryujin approaches you and Seokjin outside the Mess Hall, just after dinner.
âWhat is it? I donât like to guess.â Seokjin responds.
âYeonjun asked me to meet him at cabin 13.â Sheâs beaming. Her excitement reminds you of the feeling you had when Hoseok first asked you to go there with him.
âShh!â Seokjin hushes her. âDonât let anyone hear you say that. Especially not those two.â He adds, pointing at Namjoon and the LCT.
âWhat? I thought you guys went there.â
âYeah, sometimes. Itâs an open secret, but you still donât want to get caught there.â You explain.
âBeing out past curfew is technically against the rules too, and Namjoon is a stickler for it.â Seokjin adds.
âOh, well... Hoseok will be there too, he goes there like twice a week. Weâll be careful!â Ryujin turns and walks away.
âDid you hear that Jin?â You ask, a devious smile spreading across your face.
âOh god, what are you thinking?â Seokjin replies nervously.
âWell, as Lead Counselor of this fine establishment, I think you should be in charge of ghost hunting.â
âGhost hunting?â He questions.
It wasnât quite ghost hunting you had in mind, actually. But manufacturing a ghost. One thing you know about Hoseok is that he firmly believes in spirits. Itâs honestly surprising that heâs still willing to visit cabin 13 after Jungkook claimed to have seen a ghost there.
A little after midnight, Seokjin taps lightly on the door of your cabin. You open the door slowly and tiptoe out, white sheet in tow.
âWhat is that? Theyâre not gonna fall for that.â Seokjin whispers.
âYes they will, once we prime them for it.â You respond.
Sneaking across camp is a little nerve-racking, but you manage to make it to the side of camp with the boys cabin and then to the north side of camp when cabin 13 is located. You hold up your hand to stop Seokjin from moving any closer.
Holding a finger up to your lip, you signal him to be quiet so you can listen. You can hear giggling coming from the dark cabin, theyâre in there.
âLetâs move.â Your whisper is barely audible.
As you approach the cabin, you can hear the group more clearly. Yeonjun is giggling and Ryujin is coughing. Hoseok, is muttering something you canât make out. His voice is monotone, mellow. Seokjin and you lean up against the side of the cabin, under the window on the back wall.
âOkay so whatâs the plan?â Seokjin whispers.
âWeâre going to start by making scratching noises and thumping noises, then youâll get in position.â You explain.
âWhat do you mean Iâll be getting into position?!â Seokjin whisper-shouts.
âShh! Did you hear that?â Hoseok asks from inside the cabin.
âNo, what was it?â Yeonjun asks, holding back his giggles.
âJust thought I heard something.â
Seokjin rolls his eyes and takes the sheet and wraps it around his shoulders. You search the ground and pick up a stray stick. You tap it against the wall a few times, but thereâs no reaction from it. Instead of tapping it, you decide to scrape it against the wall slowly.
âOkay I heard it that time too.â Ryujin says.
âThere must be something outside.â Hoseok replies, voice wavering.
âYeah, itâs probably just an animal.â Yeonjun says.
You motion for Seokjin to cover himself with the sheet and crouch in front of the window, ready to jump. There is some whispering inside, so you decide to bang your fist against the wall loudly.
âFuck!â Hoseok shouts.
âJust look out the window, itâs an animal!â Yeonjun replies. You hear some hesitant footsteps inching closer, then Seokjin springs up from the ground.
âGHOST!â Hoseok wails, and then you can hear the three of them scrambling to get out of the door on the other side of the cabin. The footsteps fade away as they sprint back to their respective cabins.
You and Seokjin fall on the ground, shaking with laughter.
âI canât believe it workedâ Seokjin gasps for air between laughs.
You stand from the ground after the laughter settles. Standing on your toes, you peer into the cabin window.
âOh shit he left his bag of blunts! He must have really been scared.â
The two of you walk around to the front of the cabin and inspect the cabin. Thereâs a few empty beer cans and chip bags and the bag of blunts.
âAre you thinking what Iâm thinking?â You say, and Seokjin smiles.
~~~~~~~
Red Rover
In the heat of the afternoon, your campers are lined up across the field from their competitors, Team One. After a long day of singing, crafting, and other various outdoor activities, your campers are exhausted. Itâs a triple digit day, and even you canât deny that youâre feeling sluggish.
Red rover is a simple enough game, but Team One has more older boys and youâre afraid that your team wonât stand a chance, especially when they would much rather be cooling off in their cabins. Mack is currently attempting to give everyone a pep talk.
âI think weâre ready, Team One!â Mack yells across the field to Hoseok and Yeonjun. Both groups of campers hold hands with each other and prepare to hang on tight.
âYâall won the last game, so go ahead and start us off!â Yeonjun announces.
âLetâs call for Tony.â You say in a loud whisper to your campers. You donât trust them to pick an appropriate runner from the other team.
âLet them play.â Mack hisses at you. You look over at him, puzzled. âThey are tired and you just need to let them play.â He must be grumpy from the heat.
âFine, fine.â You raise your arms defensively.
âRed rover, red rover, let Tony come over!â Team Two shouts in unison. Tony, one of the smaller boys on Team One, does his best to sprint the distance between the two lines of campers. He tries his best, but does not manage to break through the bond on Team Two, so he is added to the line.
âRed rover red rover, let Hyuka come over!â Team Oneâs rebuttal is to take another small boy. Team Two naturally cheers for Hyuka as he runs over to Team One and he is successful in breaking through. He grabs a member of Team One and drags them over to your team.
âGreat job guys! Keep it up!â Youâre a little surprised that your team is actually winning right now.
After a few more rounds of red rover, the kids are really starting to sweat in the heat. But Team Two is still winning! Even after Jessica got taken into Team One.
âHey campers, why donât we go ahead and grab some ice pops in the Mess Hall!â Namjoon enthuses, practically sneaking up behind you.
âWhat? No! Weâre winning!â You protest.
âY/N,â Namjoon says, tilting his head at you. âItâs over one hundred degrees out here.â
âAh... yes. Letâs go inside!â Itâs embarrassing to let Namjoon catch you not putting the kids first. Even more embarrassing to watch him write something down his clipboard before motioning for the campers to follow him back to the Mess Hall.
âGod, can you believe that?â You whisper to Mack, letting a good amount of distance fall between you and the flock of campers.
âYou know, I honestly canât believe you.â Mack stops in his tracks, glaring at you.
âWhat?â You gulp.
âListen, you know I want to win games as much as the next guy, but youâre not putting campers first anymore. Weâre almost halfway through the summer and youâre letting your stupid competition with Hoseok ruin the summer for our kids. Iâm tired of it, Y/N.â
Youâre completely speechless. Youâve never heard Mack yell at anyone before and now here he is, and Junior Counselor, berating you for ruining the summer?
âJust do better.â Mack says before jogging to catch up with the campers.
~~~~~~~
Freeze Tag
âIf you see one of your teammates get frozen, make sure you help them get unfrozen. Does everyone understand?â All the campers agree to the rules of the game, and to the small bit of strategy you offered up.
This time, your team isnât just up against Team One, but Team Three as well. Itâs every man for himself, last man standing, truly a free for all. Though, youâre not too worried about Team Three. Their leaders are... distracted.
One of them is a young JC and the other is Jungkookâs new love interest. You donât envy her. Every girl at this camp, campers and counselors, want a shot at Jungkook, but sheâs the one who caught his eye. She did have an unfair advantage though, they were childhood friends or something like that.
âReady, set, go!â The LCT yells and then blows her shiny whistle. The kids are off, scrambling every which way, trying not to get tagged. You are watching your campers closely, but they are getting tagged left and right.
âAVERY!â You shout at the top of your lungs. âNikki is on your team, you donât have to freeze! And Nikki, donât tag your teammates! Ugh!â You should rather loudly. You shake your head and continue watching your team. You notice Hoseok talking to the LCT and she jots down something on her obnoxiously decorated clipboard.
She looks up from her notes and over at you, giving you a little nod. She walks away, clipboard in hand and you have a feeling sheâll be observing your activities a little more closely. Hoseok turns his attention back to the game.
His team is doing well, only a few of them seem to be frozen and the rest are still zooming around the field. Your team, however, is not following your advice. Theyâre too worried about being tagged to find teammates to unfreeze.
âJessica, can you please go unfreeze some of your teammates?â You say as Jessica runs by your post. She stops and turns back to you.
âWhat did you say?â She asks.
âI said go unfreeze your teammates! Wait, look out!â Just as youâre explaining yourself, a Team Three camper comes up behind Jessica and freezes her. You let out a sigh. âThatâs alright Jessica.â
âItâs just a game! Hopefully someone will come by and freeze you!â Mack jogs up to where you and Jessica are standing. âItâs just a game.â He says again, directly to you this time. Heâs annoyed.
âI know youâre right, I just want to win.â You sigh.
âWell we have already lost. All of our campers are frozen.â Mack replies.
âWHAT!â You screech. Mack puts a firm hand on your shoulder as a reminder of his earlier words. You try to take a deep breath and you search the field to find Hoseok. Heâs looking back at you, a smug grin on his face.
~~~~~~~
Flag Football
The rules of traditional American football have always gone over your head. The flag version of the game is a little more simple, but you still opt to let Hoseok explain the game to both teams. Youâre listening intently to his explanation, and heâs doing an annoyingly good job of putting it in terms that the kids (and you) can understand.
Once his explanation is completed, all four team leaders help the campers put on their flag belts. They could probably do it themselves, but everyone wants to make sure that the belts are as secure as possible.
âHuddle up!â Mack calls to your team and everyone forms a circle around him as he doles out assignments for offensive players and defensive players. He was very insistent on doing this part himself. Perhaps itâs because heâs a football buff, but it seems more likely that he wants to evenly spread the assignments and doesnât trust you to do it.
Mack has been taking more of a leadership role on the team because he thinks you are compromising the team due to your own selfish desire to win. Itâs hard to admit, but you know heâs right to some degree.
The teams are lined up across the field from each other, Team One starting with the ball. Your teamâs defensive line up is good. Yeonjun blows his whistle and the game begins. Bodies are running all around the field, every which way.
The kids are just aiming to grab flags, they arenât being strategic at all. They are snapping flags left and right and before Team One can get their ball very far, more than half the field has been de-flagged.
âWow, their lack of strategy is actually working for them this time.â You laugh.
âYeah, itâs amazing what happens when you let kids be kids.â Mack chides.
You sulk away from him and walk down to the other end of the field to get some distance. From here, youâve got a great view of Hoseok. Always wearing his bucket hat.
Suddenly, the whistle blows loudly and Hoseok sprints to the middle of the field where you notice that one of his kids is down. Heâs clutching his knee and holding back tears. Hoseok runs to the child and takes a look at the injury.
It canât be more than a scratch, but Hoseok scoops the camper up in his arms and walks him off the field. He comes to the Team Two side, simply because itâs the fastest way to get off the field.
âDo you want me to take you to the nurse to get a band aid or an ice pack?â He asks as he sets down the camper.
âNo, I think Iâm okay. Can I just sit out for now?â The camper replies.
âOf course you can, Iâll sit over here with you until itâs time to get ready for dinner.â Hoseok pats the camperâs back. Â
Mack walks over to see how things are going and chats with Hoseok for a moment. He gives you a look.
âAre you taking notes?â He asks you loudly, in front of Hoseok and everyone. If you could give him the middle finger, you would.
The Obstacle Course
The heat between Team One and Team Two has hit an all time high. Earlier this week, your team scored bonus points by staying in the Mess Hall after dinner to scrub the tables after a particularly messy spaghetti night. But after hearing about this, Hoseok decided his team would take some of their free time to tidy up and organize the equipment storage room. This earned Team One even more points.
Youâre determined to take him down at todayâs obstacle course. Itâs already been set up by Seokjin when the teams arrive. The LCT is here to observe the event.
There are different obstacle courses almost every week. This week, itâs your turn to demonstrate the steps for the kids. Crab walk here, hula hoop, hop on one leg, weave, run, skip, and sprint back to the start.
Once the demonstration has been completed, and you are thoroughly sweaty, Hoseok announces that he will flip a coin to see who gets to start off on the practice round.
âHeads, Team One, tails, Team Two!â You yell over at Hoseok and the LCT who are searching for a coin. She has one in her pocket and she flips the coin. Come on tails!
âGoing first is... Team Two!â The LCT says, and you cheer. You always like having the edge and going first, even if it is just a practice round for now.
âAlright, Team Two, in a line!â You shout, leading the campers to the starting point. You decide to go through it again, showing them how itâs done one more time. Leading by example, pointing on the tricky parts as you go.
Hoseok is watching you closely. Heâs learning too. When itâs his teamâs turn to do a practice run of the course, he stands to the side and letâs them run it themselves. He points out the hard parts and cheers them on as they go. Itâs frustrating how natural he is at these things.
Hoseokâs team lines back up, going first for the timed speed round. You feel nervous, you know they got through faster than your team, some of them are tired out now, so it will come down to can your campers pull this off and win?
âAlright, Team One, letâs go!â Hoseok cheers and his kids cheer back, letting him know theyâre ready. âLCT - youâve got the stopwatch!â He looks over at the LCT who is either doodling or jotting down notes on her colorful clipboard.
âOh!â She says, grabbing her phone in her pocket. âIs this Grease? Do I wave a flag?â
âJust count down and say go.â You respond, rolling your eyes at her reference.
âOn your mark, get set, go!â She yells.
Hoseokâs team gets off to a good start, but they have a few fumbles. Someone trips and another is painfully bad at hula hooping. It takes everything in you not to do a happy dance when one of Team Oneâs campers stops in the middle of his turn to slowly tie his shoe back up.
When itâs time again for your teamâs turn, they all line up at the front. You and Mack cheer for them to get them hyped up, and now all you can do is hope for the best.
So far, not bad. They are all doing their best and that is surprisingly good. By your own mental clock, they are not far behind Hoseok. After Nikki finishes, Matthew will be up next, and of course youâre a little nervous. Heâs notoriously clumsy, but heâs done fairly well this summer. Jessica is behind him and she will likely make up for any time he loses.
Matthew starts off strong with the crab walk, but anything that takes place on two feet slows him down a bit. The backwards running, though, is what takes him down. He trips and lands on his back on the grass.
âGet up!â You shout, trying your very best to sound encouraging. Get up! Keep going, come on! Just a step further! You can do it Matthew, come on!â By the time you finish your encouragement, itâs turned to full blown yelling. But Matthew is refusing to get up and heâs started crying.
You turn away for a moment, rubbing your eyes in frustration. At Matthew and at yourself.
âYou canât yell at a kid!â Hoseok snaps at you as he runs over to Matthew to comfort him. All of your team has huddle around him on the ground by the time you walk over.
âI didnât! I thought he could have still gotten up!â You reply defensively.
âYou yelled at him!â Hoseok reiterates.
âYou yelled too!â
âI did not!â Hoseok replies, defending himself against your claim.
âYou did! Youâre the reason why weâre -â
âLeaders!â The LCT shouts from her post about ten feet away. Youâre in trouble now.
âYeah?â You ask, already tucking your tail between your legs.
âWhatâs up?â Hoseok asks.
âDuring your breaks, I will see you both in my office. Do not go to your cabins, do not hop to the Mess Hall for snack, do not stop and talk to anyone unless they are Seokjin or Namjoon, do you understand?â She is breathing fire. Scolding you in front of your campers. Itâs embarrassing, but you canât say you donât deserve it.
Hoseok agrees and you can barely get a word out, so you just nod and mutter an agreement. The LCT instructs you to get back to the campers. Mack has already started walking Matthew to the infirmary.
Your campers look concerned, so you offer them a heartfelt apology. Hoseok suggests that everyone lines up together, both teams, and does one last run through the obstacle course for fun. You agree.
The Meeting
You know you deserve to be here at this meeting. Standing outside the office, you have a hard time taking any further steps. You donât know what fate awaits you behind that door and you are not looking forward to finding out. Especially with Hoseok sitting next to you.
âHey.â You jump. Itâs Hoseok. âWe should go in.â He says.
You take a deep breath and turn to look at him. Your competitor, your enemy, and previously your lover. His eyes are soft. He doesnât look angry, just tired. He reaches past you and opens the door to the LCTâs office and letâs you step in first.
âSit.â She says before you even have a moment to take in your surroundings. Youâve never been in this office before. You and Hoseok both slide into the chairs in front of the desk. She pauses for a moment and you look around the room. Itâs just an office with supplies and paperwork. The only thing in the office that has any personality is the clipboards hanging on the wall behind her. A collection of decorated and personalized clipboards. How nerdy.
âLetâs talk about what hap -â The LCT starts.
âI just want to say that - that I didnât mean to yell at him, and that Iâm -â You cut her off, wanting to get ahead of the scolding. You know youâre in the wrong here.
âDo you plan on interrupting me this entire time?â She snaps at you, and you sit back in your chair, a little caught off guard.
âIâm sorry, I just, I made a mistake and Iâm sorry.â You try again.
âSorry for interrupting me or sorry for your behavior on the field?â She interrogates you.
âBoth?â You reply, a little dumbfounded by her attitude. âI was just -â
âI donât care what you were âjust.ââ She stops you again. You know you deserve punishment, but who pissed in her fruit salad? âWhat I witnessed today on the field was completely unacceptable. There is no situation, no occasion at Camp Blue Side where how you two interacted and treated your campers is acceptable. You are so lucky I was the one who witnessed it, instead of Seokjin or Namjoon.â
Hoseok is fidgeting next to you, but youâre paralyzed. Youâve never been spoken to like this from someone you considered a peer. And sheâs wrong, if Seokjin had seen it, he wouldâve been on your side.
âYou are also so unbelievably lucky that your camper isnât too scarred from your blatant disregard for his wellbeing. You mustâve been graced by the gods today, that all he suffered was a bump on his head and a scratched arm, because if it had been worse, a concussion, a broken bone, a skull fracture, there couldâve been legal ramifications.â She pauses and sighs before continuing. âI cannot believe that either of you have worked yourselves up to such a high level of competition and competitiveness that this was the result.â
âI didnât mean to yell.â You whimper.
âWeâre sorry it got out of hand.â Hoseok sighs.
âI feel awful.â You add.
âWe were too into it.â Hoseok sighs, shaking his head.
âI donât care what you were. Thatâs the inherent problem with you two, and I knew, I knew this was a possibility of having you on opposing teams, but I hoped it wouldnât happen. I hoped you would be mature enough to handle this.â
âHoped?â Hoseok questions.
âYes, because clearly not only was I wrong, but Seokjin and Namjoon too. I donât know whatâs going on between the two of you, if itâs just tension, or some sexual repression, but what happened on that field is not Camp Blue Side.â Her words send a chill down your spine and a blush across your cheeks. How could she say that in front of him?
âYou both have been here long enough to know whatâs acceptable Camp behavior and what isnât. I never thought Iâd have to have this conversation with you, but this summer is full of nasty surprises. Do better, both of you. Now, get out.â
You and Hoseok waste no time in exiting that office and shutting the door behind you. All you want to do is run back to your cabin and bury your face in the pillow. But you know you owe Hoseok an apology.
âIâm sorry.â
âYou better fucking be sorry.â Hoseok replies, bitterness coating his tongue. âAnd that will never happen again.â He adds before walking away.
Itâs a slap in the face on top of a punch to the gut. You are guilty, there is no denying that, but you arenât the only one. How dare he act like he didnât start this whole thing. He ghosted you. All he had to do was say âHey, sorry, I'm actually not interested.â But he didnât even have the balls to do that.
You have to tone down the competitiveness, but this is certainly not over.
Camp Blue Side - Part One - Part Two - Part Three - Part Four
~~~~~~~
The staff parking lot is filled with cars and this yearâs counselors are celebrating each otherâs arrival. Each time a new car pulls up, usually honking loudly, the group cheers. Just about everyone has arrived already, Namjoon is fiddling with his clipboard and pen. Everyone should have been here by now.
Hoseok arrived about ten minutes ago. His beat up old mazda pulled up and you did your best not to look in his direction, only stealing a glance as he exited the car. The only way to describe that man is bright. Neon green shoes, rainbow tye-dye shirt, and his dazzling heart-shaped smile.Â
Somehow, he was even more beautiful than you remembered. You had spent the past school year hating him, but now heâs here, in the flesh, and you just want to feel his arms around you. You tore your eyes away from Hoseok, and you felt Seokjinâs hand on your shoulder. It grounded you back in reality.
As the final car, holding Jimin and Jungkook, pulls up, half-hearted cheers ring through the crowd. Not that you arenât all excited to see Jimin and Jungkook, but no one likes to see an angry Namjoon.Â
âHey! Itâs Jiminâs fault, okay? I even got to his place early!â Jungkook jumps out of the car, hands held defensively in front of his body. Jimin, screaming his rebuttal from inside the car, is cut off by Namjoonâs announcement.Â
âNow that everyone is finally here, we will give cabin assignments and you can all get settled in before dinner.â Seokjin, standing a good two feet away from Namjoon, produces a clipboard from his backpack and begins listing off the cabin assignments. Two counselors of the same gender identity per cabin.Â
Of course, you already know who your cabin mate will be this year. Youâve learned a lot of privileged information by arriving early with Seokjin.Â
âMargo! Hey! Weâre paired up this year in Cabin 2.â You whisper, not wanting to speak over your friend.Â
âOh hey, thatâs awesome! Letâs go!â Margo picks up one of her bags and you reach to grab the other. The two of you walk off to Cabin 2, making casual small talk about the past year away from Camp.Â
You were stoked to see a familiar name next to yours on the cabin list. Although you and Margo barely kept up with each other over the summer, you had gotten to know her quite well the year before. She was a first year counselor, and you were only a second year. You knew what it was like to feel alone, so you tried to take her under your wing and show her the ropes.Â
She ended up being a great person to talk to about your crush on Hoseok, and well now you have a lot of tea to spill.Â
âAnd he just... never called? Or texted?â Margo asks, eyes wide in disbelief.Â
âNope.âÂ
âBut heâs here now.â
âYep.â
âAnd youâre going to be competing against him in team competitions.âÂ
âExactly.â You share a devious smile.
âThis is going to be an interesting summer, isnât it?â Your cabin mate asks with a sigh.
âYou bet your ass it is.â
~~~~~~~
After Margo got her belongings unpacked and stowed away, the two of you head to the Mess Hall for dinner and to catch up with your fellow counselors. Youâd be lying if you said you werenât nervous to see Hoseok and to have to explain to everyone why the two of you werenât... together.Â
But it appears that Hoseok may already be handling that himself. A group of male counselors are sitting at a table where he is recounting some tale, and they are all listening intently.Â
You canât quite make out what he is saying, but you spot Seokjin sitting at a different table with Yoongi and a young guy you donât recognize. Must be Yeonjun, the new JC who will be co-leading Team One with Hoseok. Youâll be keeping an eye on him. Seokjin waves you over and Margo follows you.Â
âWhat has he been telling everyone?â You hiss at the guys when you sit.Â
âWell...â Seokjin starts and your heart begins to sink. You know that tone.
âHeâs got a new girlfriend.â Yoongi says, ripping the bandaid off in one swift motion. It stings. âHeâs been bragging about her to all the guys. Sheâs hot and they met at work, or something like that.â He adds.Â
âAh.â You try to breathe through the feeling of your stomach dropping out, and Margo pats your bag gently. You spent the past year hoping he would call, processing the fact that he wasnât going to, and burning with righteous fury. And now... you just want to cry.Â
But you canât let anyone see you cry. Especially not here and not now. Hoseok may have hurt you, but you canât let him know youâre in pain.Â
âAlright everyone, while weâre waiting on our dinner, letâs pair up in our activity groups and get to know each other a little better!â Namjoon announces and the room begins to buzz as everyone finds the people they would be working with this summer.Â
You look around for Margoâs twin brother, Mack. He is going to be your co-leader for Team Two this year.Â
âHey Y/N!â Mack says, extending his hand for a fist bump.Â
âWhatâs up! You excited to crush Team Two and Team Three this year?â You may be over-enthusing to make sure you donât seem... sad.Â
âYeah! Iâm sure you are too. Especially to beat Hoseokâs team.â Gulp.
âI do love some friendly competition, haha.â You reply dryly.Â
âWell arenât you guys together?â
âUh...â you pause, color draining from your face.
âOh god. Iâm so sorry. He was talking about some awesome girl heâs been dating. I only caught part of the conversation, I thought he was talking about you.â Mack, looking mortified, tries to explain himself.
âNo, itâs okay. He ghosted me. I haven't heard from him since last summer.â You clarify. Mack looks so sorry he mentioned it.
âWell I guess we really do have to beat his team now, donât we?â He says with a smirk.
While Mack makes some more small talk about the plan for the coming weeks, your eyes scan the room. Everyone is paired off in their little teams. Yoongi is with Xavier, his Music co-leader, Taehyung with his Arts & Crafts co-leader, but his eyes are across the room on the Lead Counselor in Training who is chatting with Namjoon and taking notes on her clipboard. You spot Hoseok all the way on the furthest side of the Mess Hall from you. Heâs talking to Yeonjun, facing away from you and that feels intentional.Â
When the cook, Heather, steps out of the kitchen with a large sheet pan full of pizza, the counselors cheer. Then they immediately run to get in line, but before they can be served, Heather goes back into the kitchen.Â
âHow are you doing?â Seokjin asks, lining up behind you.
âFine, Jin. Just fine.âÂ
âSo, not fine, then?â He quips, laying a hand on your shoulder.Â
âHeâs gotten ahead of the narrative.â You reply, but he gives you a puzzled look. âHeâs already told everyone about a girl and now I just look... pathetic.âÂ
âYouâre not pathetic, Y/N.â Seokjin replies, giving your shoulder a pat.Â
Heather returns from the kitchen with a tray of side salads and a tray of desserts, a choice between a sugar cookie and chocolate pudding.Â
Unsurprisingly, you can see that Hoseok has secured a spot at the front of the line. Against your will, you watch him closely. He grabs his pizza, two slices, grabs a side salad, and reaches for a pudding cup. Something in your stomach twists, and you just want to get out of there.Â
âHey, where are you going?â Seokjin asks, but youâre already out the door.Â
You try to hold back tears as you walk toward your cabin.Â
He used to give you his chocolate puddings. Who is he going to give it to now? Why would he pick it up if he doesnât even like them.Â
When you make it back to the cabin, you throw yourself onto your bunk and let the tears flow into the pillow. Seeing Hoseok has been harder than you anticipated.Â
~~~~~~~
âHey, Y/N, you okay?â Margo asks, tiptoeing into the cabin.
âYeah, you should head back, isnât everyone still hanging out?â You ask, bring your head up from the pillow. Itâs dark outside already.
âWell, no. Itâs kind of late. Did you eat anything?â She asks.
âYeah, I had a protein bar.â You reply, but your stomach growls, as if to say, that wasnât enough. Margo reaches into her bag and pulls out a package of oreos, holding it in your direction.Â
You cave, holding your palm open for a handful of the cookies. Your nearly empty stomach accepts the sweet treat and settles.Â
âDid everyone notice I left, they must think Iâm so pathetic.â You pout.Â
âYou wanna know what everyone noticed?â You nod in response to Margoâs question. âEveryone noticed that Hoseok left as soon as he realized you were gone.â
~~~~~~~
CPR training is a vital part of the yearly annual counselor training. Everyone needs to know how to resuscitate and potentially save the lives of the campers. Though it is a very serious topic, itâs hard to take the CPR dummies seriously. The faceless, limbless, lifeless dolls look very much like... blow up dolls.Â
âIf I hear one more moan out of you guys I will dock your pay!â Namjoon shouts over the chorus of immaturity. Very suddenly, the room goes quiet, âI thought that might get your attention, now Seokjin, please continue with the demonstration.âÂ
âYes sir.â Seokjin replies, holding back a smirk.
He begins pumping the inanimate heart to the beat of a song and your eyes wander to Hoseok across the room. Heâs giggling and whispering something to Yeonjun. Those boys will be fierce competition.Â
Itâs something you thought about this morning on your run. As you were jogging on the wooded trail, you realized Mack was right, you have to do everything in your power to take Team One down. The fire of competition will get you through the sadness of Hoseokâs betrayal. And tonight, youâll get your first shot at beating them in the game of glow in the dark capture the flag.
Standing from his kneeling position, Seokjin asks, âAlright, who is up next?â
~~~~~~~
The sun has set and the teams have been divided for a game of capture the flag. Hoseok ended up on Seokjinâs team, and although you wish you were on your friendâs team, youâre relieved you didnât end up on Hoseokâs.Â
âOkay, Y/N, youâre a runner, I want you and Ryujin to be in charge of trying to get their flag. The rest of us will try to distract their team and protect our flag.â Namjoon orders in the huddle. The huddle breaks and everyone waits for the final ray of sunlight to fall behind the horizon.Â
âIâm nervous.â Ryujin whispers to you while you stretch your calves.
âAh yeah, you probably should be.â You joke. âListen, all you need to worry about is getting tagged. Just donât let anyone touch you and do your best to stay hidden. If you get your hands on the flag, just sprint back to our base.â
âYou make it sound easy.â She laughs.
Seokjinâs whistle sounds and you take off. Ryujin, poor girl, runs straight for the field between the two bases. A rookie mistake. You, however, have played this game before. You run to the trees on the side of the field to take cover and watch the game unfold.Â
Itâs hard to see, but you can just make out Ryujinâs form running around the field dodging other bodies. It looks like so far your team is doing a good job of keeping the flag safe. Namjoon tackles a member of the other team and you decide to make a run for the other teamâs base while everyone is distracted.Â
You can hear your heart beating in your ear as the blood rushes to your legs. Youâve almost run the whole distance of the field behind the trees when you hear something. Suddenly a pair of neon green shoes catches your eyes. Hoseok.Â
Holding your breath, you take cover, crouching behind a tree and hope to god that he doesnât come over here. If he knew it was you, maybe he would spare you both the confrontation. You count to 60, slowly, and when he doesnât come, you decide to stand up, intending to run for their base in a hail mary attempt to win.Â
But youâre cut short. Just a few feet away, Hoseok is standing, waiting. He doesnât move at first, but after a few breaths, he takes a step, and another. You can finally make out his eyes in the darkness. Itâs the first eye contact youâve made so far.
There are no words shared between you. At this moment your mind is blank. Having your old summer fling within arms reach is overwhelming. You feel the pull to reach out to him. Heâs eyes are looking directly into yours and for a moment it looks like heâs going to speak. But he stops himself, his brows furrow for a moment, and then, he runs.
~~~~~~~
After a long week of training, morning runs, avoiding Hoseok, and trying to figure out what happened between you and him during the capture the flag game, you are really looking forward to lake day. A day off from training before final camp preparations take place. The campers will be arriving in just two days.Â
You are one of the first ones to show up at the beach after lunch. You wasted no time changing into your bathing suit and slapping on some sunscreen. Jungkook and Jimin, the aquatic leaders, had already arrived as well.Â
Other counselors trickle in and you get to watch their interactions. Itâs only been a few days, but everyone is already back into the Camp Blue Side swing of things.Â
The JCs all tend to head straight for the lake, while the older counselorâs chill on the beach. Youâve opted to sunbathe for a while before cooling off in the lake. You expect Seokjin will take a spot next to you when he arrives.Â
The LCT has found a spot on the sand with Yoongi and Taehyung, no surprises there. Sheâs delicately rubbing sunscreen on Taehyungâs back. When she finishes, Taehyungâs Arts & Crafts co leader calls him over and he puts sunscreen on her back. Youâre pretty sure you can see steaming coming out of the LCTâs ears.Â
Someone lets out a joyful shout as they run from the edge of the beach all the way down the dock and jump into the lake. Hoseok.
âHe really is still a camper at heart, isnât he?â Seokjin asks as he sets his towel out next to yours.Â
âIf you mean to say heâs a child, then I can agree with that.â You roll your eyes. He is horsing around in the water with the JCs, no wonder they all look up to him. Yeonjun, his co-leader, is trying to pull his head underwater, but Hoseok isnât budging.Â
He hasnât changed much and it takes you back to last summer. The campers would climb all over him during lake days, and he would let them. Once the two of you had become... a thing, you would always notice that he didnât rub in the sunscreen on his nose. It became your responsibility to make sure the lotion was rubbed in all the way.Â
âY/N, Jin! We need one more for volleyball!â Jiminâs invitation brings you back to reality. Seokjin consults you before claiming the spot. You follow him over to the net to watch the game. Hoseok is playing.Â
At first, you try not to watch him, but when the game gets going, Hoseok steps up his game. He serves, he sets, he dives, itâs hard not to watch him. You notice, toward the end of the game, that Hoseok has his signature white streak across his nose. He catches you looking, but instead of looking away, you point to your nose.Â
Hoseok, still looking at you, misses a ball that lands right next to him, losing the game for his team.Â
âHoseok! What the hell man?â Jimin shouts, frustrated by Hoseokâs lack of attention.Â
âSorry, sorry. I got... distracted.â Hoseok replies, picking up the volleyball. âRound two anyone?â
~~~~~~~
âAll right campers, letâs give a big round of applause to Heather for cooking our dinner tonight!â Seokjin announces over the microphone. The children, hyped up on carbs from dinner, cheer loudly for the Camp chef. They all arrived just a few hours ago, descending on camp like a swarm of buzzing bees.Â
Youâre a bit of a nervous wreck. For some god forsaken reason, you decided that you could volunteer to give a presentation at the camper orientation, and now youâre about to have to do that. Your notecards are organized and you rehearsed your talking points with Margo twice, but it doesnât feel like enough when there are close to one hundred people in the audience.Â
âOkay, now that weâve gone over the basic camp rules, letâs give it up for Y/N, the Team Two leader who will be discussing the team games!â Seokjin says cheerfully, stepping off the stage and handing the microphone over to you. This is it.Â
âHey everyone! Whoâs excited for the team games this year?â You ask, a big smile across your face. Of course everyone, counselorâs included, cheer loudly.Â
âYeah, that's great to hear. I am also very excited. As you can tell I took a lot of notes to make sure I give you all the important info.â You joke, but thereâs only a few scattered laughs. You have to tuck the microphone into your arm awkwardly so you can flip your note card over to find the right page.
âOh well theyâre out of order, so I guess...â You look out into the crowd of expectant faces. Some of the campers are already not paying attention, youâve lost them. As always, Hoseok catches your eye. He can see youâre floundering already, and he smirks. He fucking smirks. âIâll have to wing it.â You finish your thought and toss the notecards to the side.
You manage to get through it, even working a few jokes in here and there. And it seems like the kids are really pumped for the team activities and the competition.Â
âOkay, I think next up is Jungkook with some information about water activities and lake day!â The kids cheer, the girls squeal, all too excited for Jungkook to be on stage.Â
âHey, that was pretty good Y/N!â Seokjin whispers as you step back down from the stage.
âYou missed a few talking points though-â Namjoonâs critique is cut short.
âYou were GREAT!â Seokjin reaffirms.Â
~~~~~~~
Hushed whispers can be heard in the cabin, but itâs the first night and youâre not going to try to enforce lights out. You would probably be struggling to fall asleep either way.Â
Your interactions with Hoseok thus far have been quite puzzling. He has been confusing, rude, and annoying, but what does it mean? You keep thinking about the look in his eye that night during capture the flag. You could feel a spark between you, but he almost looked pained. But heâs the one who caused your pain.Â
Maybe heâs just trying to get under your skin to make sure his team wins. Well tomorrow is day one of camp, and youâll be damned if you let him win.
Summary: Last summer, sparks flew between you and Hoseok. He had an unforgettable smile, and you were putty in his hands. By the end of the summer, promises were made and you shared your phone number. But he never called. This summer, you're back at camp with a vengeance. Ghosted or not, you're ready for some friendly competition. He may be a Camp Blue Side veteran, but you won't back down.
Itâs 7am and the air is already a warm 70 degrees: perfect weather for running the trail down to Lake Blue Side. The dirt under your sneakers is a familiar and welcome feeling. Back home, youâre always running on pavement, so the cushion of the ground is a nice change.
The trees that surround camp are lush and brimming with birds and insects. Just above this hill, the greenery will give way to the beach. It puts an extra spring in your step, and you push through the incline, sprinting until your shoes hit the sand.
The blue ripples lap at the shore line while the sun, hovering just above the horizon, warms the cool dark water. You walk toward the edge of the water, attempting to catch your breath from your uphill sprint. The past two years at Camp Blue Side, this lake has been your happy place. Most mornings, you sneak out of bed before sunrise and run the trail to this very spot.
The calming effect of the lake helps you make it through the hectic days at camp. Wrangling campers from sunrise to sunset (and then some) is tiring and doesnât leave much room for your own thoughts to get sorted out. Your near-daily trips to the lake became even more important last summer.
~~~~~~~
As a JC, in your first year, you spent most of your time playing lackey to the Sports Leader. You had registered late (at the urging of your dear friend Seokjin), and the only position left for you was equipment manager. Between checking in on your campers and lugging sports and outdoor equipment around, you barely had a moment to breathe. It ended up being a good summer, but you knew you wanted a chance to try something different.
Year two, you got assigned to co-lead Team One and it was, somehow, an even more hectic summer than you had expected. Being responsible for the fun and safety of so many campers every day was fulfilling, but youâve always valued alone time. Your trips to the lake increased ten-fold last year.
And thatâs when you started noticing Hoseok.
Of course, you had seen him around camp and even made small talk with him in passing. You were friendly with all your fellow counselors, but aside from your Team One co-leader, your cabin mate, and Seokjin, you hadnât had time to get to know anyone that well.
Every time you went for your run, you would spot Hoseok doing the same. At least most of the time. Other times, he would be doing push ups or lunges on the field. And when Hoseok exercises, he glows. When you run in the heat and humidity, you sweat. But Hoseok glistens.
So naturally, you began noticing him more, and he noticed you noticing. One thing led to another, and the casual group conversations transformed into less-casual solo conversations. Hoseok became Hobi, and he would always give you his chocolate pudding. He didnât like it, and he knew that it was your favorite dessert. Around week five, he asked if you wanted to go on your morning run with him, and it ended with a kiss right here at the lake.
At the end of the summer, you gave him your number and he promised to call. He lived a ways away from camp, but only about an hour away from your university. There was definitely something there, and you were excited to see where it went.
But Hoseok broke his promise. He never called.
~~~~~~~
âHeâs on the docket, just like the past several years. Heâs not going to just not show up, Y/N.â Seokjin pointed at the Camp Blue Side staff list on his clipboard.
âI know that, Jin.â You roll your eyes at him. âBut Iâm just saying...â
âIf you didnât want to see Hoseok, why did you sign up for another year? You couldâve just stayed home.â
âI canât let him win!â You shout, your voice carrying through the open windows in Seokjinâs office, disturbing the pre-camp peace.
Seokjin looks at you in silence. Relaxing your shoulders, you apologize silently.
âLook, you cannot let your petty energy affect your performance as a counselor. Thatâs not the way we do things around here, I know you know that.â You nod along with your friendâs gentle scolding. âAnd if your competitive nature is going to be an issue this summer, I need you to let me know so I can reassign you.â
âReassign me?â You reach for the clipboard in Seokjinâs hand and read it over.
Jung, Hoseok - Team One Leader
Y/L/N, Y/N - Team Two Leader
âOh, hell yes.â You pass the clipboard back to Seokjin and make your hasty exit, running from the office. You can hear him calling after you, probably afraid of whatâs going through your head. But your head has actually cleared for the first time in months. There is only one thought now.
Warnings: blood, choking, coughing, vomiting, hanahaki disease, relationship issues, fighting, mentions of cheating, mentions of sex, mentions of hospitals and medical treatments
The ICU waiting room is suffocating. The room is small and plain and full of people waiting to visit their loved ones. There is a family with about six kids to your left. The youngest children are roaming around, giggling happily. They donât understand the implications of being in this place.
You shuffle around in the stiff chair, waiting for Yoongiâs doctor to come and speak with you about his condition. The Generic Hotel Art catches your eye. A field of flowers spreading out to the horizon. Itâs a little too on the nose. Last night, you saw the illness taking over your boyfriend but you had no idea just how bad it was.
âMaâam, youâre here to see Min Yoongi, correct?â A man in navy scrubs approaches you, a clipboard in his hands. âIâm Dr. Kim, please follow me this way.âÂ
The doctor leads you through a set of double doors and down a hallway. You can smell the crisp clean scent of the hospital. You can see into each room and with each passing patient a lump grows in your throat
âLetâs stop here for a moment and talk about Yoongiâs course of treatment.â Dr. Kim stops suddenly, a few feet away from what you assume is Yoongiâs room. You can make out a lump in the bed, but the sheer curtains blur his face. âAs Iâm sure you know, his diagnosis is acute hanahaki disease.â You nod along, images of flower petals invading your mind.
âUnfortunately, the disease is so severe that the typical treatments we use to stop the spread will not be enough.â The doctor pauses as though he wants you to chime in.Â
âSo will you be performing the surgery?â You question, chewing on the dry skin around your thumb nail.Â
âThe surgery is either a very early intervention, or an absolute last resort.â He stops and you realize there is something not clicking in your brain.Â
âI donât think I understand.âÂ
âIt would take several hours to remove the growths from his lungs and since he is already so weak, his odds of survival are about 25% at best.â The doctor gives you a moment to process the information, to realize how dire this situation truly is. He brings his hand up to squeeze your arm and it hits you like a ton of bricks.Â
Your legs start to give, but you cling to the wall. The doctor grabs your arms to help steady you. Tears are streaming down your face, each carrying the pain you feel just imagining life without Yoongi.
âWha- what can you do?â You stutter, waves of sorrow shake your body.Â
âWe need to track down the person heâs in love with and see if there are any feelings there. At this point the safest way to heal Yoongi is the natural way. He needs to feel that his love is, in fact, requited.âÂ
~~~~~~~
Youâve never seen Yoongi so pale. And thatâs really saying something, seeing as he never goes outside. His hand, that youâve delicately placed in your own, is clammy. You can tell heâs really uncomfortable, but he still manages to sleep.Â
For the past hour or so, youâve been doing two things: waiting for Yoongi to wake up and trying to figure out who stole his heart.
It has to be someone at his job, heâs always either at work or home. You knew a few of his work friends, but there is one name that sticks out. Someone heâs been working more closely with lately.Â
âBaby?â Yoongiâs hoarse voice cracks, his throat damaged by the foliage growing up from his lungs. He weakly squeezes your hand, and it sends a fresh wave of tears spilling over your lashes.Â
âIs it Jungkook?â You question him bluntly. He closes his eyes and tries to swallow. âI need to know, itâs your only chance at getting through this.â
Yoongi is unresponsive to your sudden interrogation, so you ask again. âIs it Jungkook?â
He nods.
~~~~~~~
âIâm sorry maâam he is unavailable for the rest of the afternoon.â The receptionist responds to your inquiry to speak to Jeon Jungkook without even looking up from her computer screen.Â
The lobby of BH Music Group is familiar to you, though the receptionist must be somewhat new if she doesnât recognize you. The sleek black leather furniture and a wall to wall mural from a local street artist havenât changed, though. The speakers are playing a chill lo-fi beat track, no doubt created in house.Â
When Yoongi first got his job here, you visited him quite frequently. He had a little set up in an office with the other newbies, but it wasnât long before he had his very own studio space. Genius Lab he called it. A bit cocky for an assistant producer, but it fit his brand perfectly. He started getting busier, so your visits became few and far between.Â
âIs there something else I can help you with?â The reception asks, cocking an eyebrow in your direction.Â
âYes, sorry. I really need to speak with Jungkook.â You stress your words, trying to make her realize the urgency. âIâm Min Yoongiâs girlfriend.â Her eyes grow wide, and she nods before picking up her phone.Â
âSir, Min Yoongiâs girlfriend is at the front desk asking to see you.â She pauses and you can just barely make out the sound of someone talking on the other line. She turns her attention to you.Â
âMaâam, heâll see you now.â She gives you a sympathetic look and hangs up her phone.Â
Two doors down from Genius Lab is Jungkookâs studio, Golden Closet. Standing outside of Jungkookâs studio feels a bit surreal. This isnât your life, it canât be. Your boyfriend loves you and only you.
This is the reality you must face though. You reach forward and knock firmly against the door. It takes a long moment of eerie quiet for the door to open. A tall man with big bright eyes looks down at you from behind the door. His skin is flawless and his dark hair hangs, slightly mussed, next to his sharp jaw.Â
Heâs beautiful.Â
And that makes you hate him even more.
âHi, Y/N, please come in.â Jungkook bows his head and stands back from the door. You enter, slowly walking past him. His studio looks very similar to Yoongiâs. Speakers, mixing equipment, a computer. Heâs got a keyboard with red backlighting and a handful of little tchotchkes lined up in a row under his monitors.Â
âWould you like to sit?â He motions toward the leather sofa on the back wall of the studio. Crossing your arms, you shake your head and lean against the wall instead.Â
âYoongi is in the hospital.â You blurt out, eyes avoiding Jungkookâs. The emotions are already building up again, creating pressure in your chest. âThe ICU, actually.â
âOh god. Iâm so sorry.â Jungkook sits down in his desk chair. âWhat can I do?â He asks after a momentâs pause.Â
Something about the sincerity in his voice breaks you. You crumble onto the floor and let out a sob. Jungkook, seemingly unsure of what to do, moves down to the floor next to you and opens up his arms.
What he offers is a hug, some comfort. What he gets itâs a dozen slaps to the chest and more crying.Â
âDid you know?!â You cry out between sobs. âWhy did you do this?!â
âNo! What?â He asks, not fighting you, but pulling you closer. âI donât know what you mean.â The sobs take over and you give up fighting him. His arms are strong, but not smothering.
Jungkook, practically a stranger, holds you while you cry. It must have been two or three full minutes before youâre calm enough to speak again.Â
âYoongi has hanahaki disease.â You can feel Jungkookâs chest jolt, his breath catching. âDid you know heâs in love with you?â
[Thursday Night]
Tonight isnât the first night that youâve shown up at Jinâs door sobbing. At this rate, it probably wonât be the last. He still hasnât read your texts about needing a place to stay, so heâs probably asleep.Â
You knock loudly a few times, careful not to disturb the floral wreath hanging on the center of the door. And after a few moments you can hear some footsteps inside the apartment. Thereâs some more silence and then you can hear hushed whispers.Â
The door creaks open and Jinâs boyfriend Namjoon is standing before you.Â
âY/N, what are you doing here?â Namjoon sighs sleepily.Â
âYou scared us! I even got my old tennis racquet out of the closet!â Jin complains before he pokes his head around Namjoonâs broad shoulders. The tear stains and redness of your face instantly catch his attention. âOh no, what happened?âÂ
For a moment, you canât say anything. Your chest fills with emotions. Pain, frustration, sadness, heartbreak. The words canât get past your trembling lips, and soon you feel Jinâs arms envelop you, his sweater absorbing your burning tears.Â
Somehow, through all your blubbering, Jin has been able to understand what happened with Yoongi. Heâs rubbing soothing circles on your back, guiding you to the couch that will be your bed for the next few nights. Namjoon has brought over a pillow, blanket, and a glass of water for you.Â
âWhy donât you lay down and try to sleep now? This isnât going to be resolved tonight, unfortunately,â Namjoon interrupts Jinâs comforting whispers.Â
âHeâs right, Y/N, I can tell youâre exhausted. Try to get some rest.â Jin helps you get settled in bed before following Namjoon into their bedroom.Â
Jin was right. You are completely exhausted, emotionally drained. But every time you attempt to close your eyes, all you can see is him, the flowers, and the blood.
~~~~~~~
[Thursday Evening]
Something is off. Heâs been coming home late everyday for the past few weeks. You hoped that today, of all days, he would make an effort. But here you are, alone, surrounded by a table full of his favorite foods. From the moment you got home from work, youâd been on your feet cooking. As if your job waiting tables wasnât strenuous enough.Â
Lately it feels like youâre the only one making an effort in this relationship. He leaves for work before you wake up, returns after youâve gotten into bed for the night. He doesnât even take the lunches you pack for him to work anymore. You never would have suspected Yoongi of cheating on you, but his behavior is making you question everything you thought you knew.Â
Today will be the final straw, you told yourself. If he didnât make it home in time for dinner on your three year anniversary, it would be time to confront him. But as six turns into seven and seven into eight, you decide to pack the meal into tupperware.Â
You expected tears to come, but they didnât. Your cheeks are bone dry while you pile the rice into a slightly warped plastic container. Youâre in disbelief, or perhaps you just expected this all along. The containers of untouched anniversary dinner stack neatly in the refrigerator.Â
The sound of keys jingling against the door signals his arrival before he opens the door. You lean yourself against the kitchen counter, grounding yourself.Â
âHey babe, happy anniversary!â Yoongiâs smile shines, like it always does, but his eyes arenât as bright. Heâs carrying a bouquet of small sunflowers.Â
âHappy anniversary.â A faint smile crosses your face as he hands you the bouquet. He looks a little puzzled by your lack of gratitude. But then he notices the pile of dishes in the sink.Â
âOh, did you make dinner?â You nod silently as Yoongi shuffles the pots and pans around in the sink. âI made us reservations at The Table. Did you eat already?â Your eyebrows shoot up.
âNo!â You try again, this time suppressing the surprise in your voice. âNo, I havenât. That sounds really good.â Maybe things arenât as bleak as they seem; at least he didnât completely forget.
The ride to the restaurant is nearly silent, some tacky radio advertisements playing quietly. Heâs holding your hand, but youâre looking out the window, focused on everything but the uncomfortable quiet. Yoongi breaks the silence and mentions something about the project heâs working on at the studio.Â
The studio, you think to yourself. Of course thatâs all he can talk about. His passion has always been music. You were both thrilled when he got an entry level job at a music studio, and at the beginning things were good. But Yoongi always strives to be the best, and he moved up the ladder to Assistant Producer in less than a year.
Whatever album heâs working on now has kept him away from you for far too long.
âSo when is that album releasing anyway?â
âLater this summer, but our work on it is almost done.â He says, and you breathe a sigh of relief.Â
âSo youâll be back home at normal times?âÂ
âWell...â Yoongi glances over at you. âJungkook wants me to work on another project with him when this oneâs over.âÂ
âIâm glad your boss likes your work, but hasnât he ever heard of a work-life balance?â
âJungkook is NOT my boss. He's-â Yoongi starts.
âWell heâs not your girlfriend either!â You shout. âYouâre never home anymore Yoongi.â Your hand slips from his and you cross your arms.
âThis is my career.â Something catches in his throat, he coughs a little. You knew he loved his job, but you never heard him get emotional about it.
âSo I just need to accept that Iâll never get to see you again?â Yoongi pulls up to the front of the restaurant, in line for valet parking.Â
âDo you want to go home and keep fighting or do you want to get dinner?â He asks, still trying to clear his throat.
The restaurant is very nice: a robust wine selection, a pianist playing in one corner, and a sleek menu. The other tables are talking in quiet voices to retain the romantic ambiance of the place. You and Yoongi are doing your part by not speaking at all.Â
Heâs making it tough though; he keeps coughing. You hope heâs not getting sick.
âAre you okay?â You ask, passing him a tissue from your purse, trying your best not to sound angry.
âYeah Iâve just got something stuck in my throat, excuse me.â Yoongi snatches the tissue from your hand before walking toward the restroom.Â
When he returns, he looks a little worse for the wear. His skin looks paler, his hair mussed, and a wet spot on his shirt.Â
âAre you getting sick?â You have to ask him now. âWhatâs that?â You point to the wet spot just below his collar.Â
âI got some spit on my shirt. I do think Iâm coming down with something, but Iâll be fine.â Something doesnât seem right. He looks more than sick, almost paranoid.Â
Through the rest of the night he coughs here and there, but he seems to regain his composure. His long dark locks get tucked behind his ear, and for a moment you can forget how hard things have been lately. He asks about your work friends and hobbies and seems to listen intently. The curve of his smile draws a smile out of you too.Â
Between dinner and dessert, Yoongi reaches across the smooth table cloth to take your hand in his. His thumb gently strokes your fingers.Â
âYou know that I love you, right?â He asks, his smile faded to a straight line. You squeeze his hand.Â
âYouâre going to have to do a better job of showing it.â
~~~~~~~
Youâre not sure if itâs the best move, but you want to show him that you havenât given up yet. When you step out of the bathroom, wearing a revealing chemise, Yoongi is sitting on his side of the bed, facing away from you.Â
âHow are you feeling?â You ask, climbing onto the bed. He sighs, and you reach for his shoulders. You begin rubbing his shoulder muscles, feeling the tension in them slowly releasing. Kneading his back muscles with your fingers, you lean forward to lay kisses along his broad shoulders.Â
âBaby, can we not tonight?â You freeze, not sure you heard him correctly. âI know itâs our anniversary, I just donât feel good.â You remove your hands from his body.
âYeah, of course. Thereâs some cough medicine and painkillers in the bathroom if it will help.â You reply, leaning back against the headboard, scrolling through your twitter feed so you can hide your embarrassment.
âIâm going to take a shower. You donât have to wait up for me.â He gets up from the bed and enters the bathroom without glancing your way. You settle into the blankets and try to relax.
You can hear him coughing again once the shower turns on. You turn over in bed, his sudden cold demeanor reminding you of the trouble your relationship is really in. Itâs hard to fall asleep to the sound of your boyfriend coughing violently, but you manage to drift away.
~~~~~~~
[Friday Morning]
The sound of Namjoon leaving the apartment wakes you. It must be around 7:30 or so. Jin is in the kitchen quietly making coffee, still in his pajamas.Â
âJin, are you not going to work today?â You say in a half-whisper, not wanting to startle him.Â
âI called in sick. I wanted to stay with you today,â Jin explains, walking over to the couch with two mugs of coffee. He made yours just the way you like it, almond milk and a little bit of sugar. The warmth of the drink momentarily soothes your sleepy body.Â
Jin reaches across the coffee table and picks up the tv remote. He turns on a morning talk show, some washed-up celebrity talking to slightly less washed-up celebrities about what projects or life events they have going on.Â
âAnd later on in the show we will be joined by Jackson Wang, who will share his story of heartbreak and unrequited love that ultimately lead to the creation of his latest single, 100 ways.â The audience cheers for a moment before Jin switches the channel.Â
âSorry.â He sighs.Â
âI donât think thatâs what the song is about...â You joke, sarcasm seeping through the pain in your chest.
Jin chuckles at your remark, but he sits uncomfortably at the end of the couch picking at his fingernails.Â
âListen I wanted to say something...â He starts.Â
âJin, do you think I could shower before we get into anything? I just need a minute to wake up and I feel kind of gross.â The mascara stains from the night before are beginning to irritate your skin, and a hot shower could do wonders for you. But truthfully, you just arenât ready to talk about it yet.
âSure, Iâll grab some sweats you can borrow.â Jin sighs, getting up from his seat.
 The hot water melts away the tension in your muscles, but the tension in your mind remains. Itâs difficult to keep the images of Yoongi coughing up dozens and dozens of yellow and orange petals from flooding your mind. The drops of blood on the petals and the floor just showed you how far the disease had progressed. How long heâs been in love with someone else.
The floral scent of Jinâs lavender body wash is a little too reminiscent of the smell from the night before. Sickly sweet flowers with a hint of acidic bile and metallic blood. The clean water rinses the suds but the scent remains on your skin.
When you close your eyes to rinse shampoo from your hair, the scene from the night before plays out in vivid detail.
~~~~~~~
[Thursday Night]
You had been awakened by the sounds of Yoongi retching in the bathroom. You called out for him, but he didnât answer, so you let yourself in.Â
He is doubled over the toilet. A dozen or so brightly colored petals scattered around him, some smeared with watery blood. The moment you burst in, he tried to hide the extent of it, tried not to let you see but he knew it was useless. He let himself lean against the wall in defeat.Â
The violent episode he was experiencing seemed to come to a halt.
âAre you...â You pause, there are too many questions to ask, but you know there is only one you can ask in the moment. âAre you okay?â He closes his eyes and nods slowly. You take a moment to examine his face. Itâs red, and there are tear streaks clear down his chin. Thereâs drops of blood and sweat on his bare chest. His heavy breathing is slowing back to normal.Â
And then you have to leave. You canât stay and look at him and his flower petals any longer. It looks like heâll be okay for the night, so you grab your purse and phone and walk straight through the door.
~~~~~~~
[Friday Morning]
Bumps rise across your skin as you exit the shower and step onto the cold floor tiles. You wrap a towel around your body and sit on the edge of the bathtub. Your phone, face down on the counter, buzzes again, and you decide to face the messages you ignored last night.Â
You scroll through the usual email and social media notifications to get to the dozens of texts and missed calls from Yoongi, still unsure if you should even hear him out. How can he still be in love with you when heâs been growing flowers for someone else?
A phone call interrupts your thinking. The number has a local area code. A sudden feeling of nausea tells you that something is wrong.Â
âHello?â Your voice echos against the tiled walls.
âHello we are trying to reach Ms. Y/L/N Y/N.â
âThis is her.â
âYou are listed as an emergency contact for Mr. Min Yoongi. He has been admitted to the ICU at Grace Regional Medical Center, how quickly can you get here?â
