the way some of you interact with the casino royale torture scene you have got to admit ur kind of fucking weird and im so serious. why are you furiously masturbating over his nude genital torture scene
mike grell manufacturing reasons to draw the beautiful natural landscapes of western america
Honestly a better reading with Courier might be as a trans man, allegorically, not allowed to come back out.
absolutely! i am particularly fond of this reading especially with regards to allegories of transsexuality, and the interaction of shapeshifting fluidity with him having such a specific connection to his gender. big fan of slotting unconscious queerness into the narrative, i am.
it does make me wonder, though, whether jake would take any steps to regain his ‘male body’; if he could, would he? he’s using the name jacqueline in cable (2024). is jake fearful of presenting as a transman, as an other? he dreams of being normal. he can’t default back into it — but can shapeshift into charles xavier. gender affirmed ✓ — but can he change his new default? his cells are still frozen into the new template. would anything have an effect? how could he have any concept of his natural body’s ability to change, outside of using his x-gene, if before he could just shapeshift? all this to say that jacob gavin jr doing t shots in his gorgeous dc national mall apartment would be incredibly chic.
circling back, jake’s arc is rich with material for this interpretation. he is trapped in this unfamiliar body, so against what he should be, and he is recoiling. in trying to control a piece of himself, jake says, i can’t find me; it’s like a fundamental disconnect with this new body he’s been forced into, and he has lost control. the dream-scene with fontanelle: jake dreams of himself as a man. can’t i even get away from this body in my dreams?
in gambit #14, remy says jake’s natural state is a male body. it is, isn’t it? what interests me about this comment is he doesnt cast doubt on jake being a man, at all. narration boxes refer to him as jacob gavin jr (looking very much like a jacqueline now) and a young man — now trapped in the body of a young woman. he may appear to look like a woman, yes, but he’s referred to as being unquestionably a man (robert sapolsky’s lecture on the neurobiology of transsexuality is brought to mind).
or, as well, jake being not just allegorically a trans man, but rather him being now frozen away from himself, the himself that he’s finally gotten and settled into, and having to live through appearing as a woman again. so it would be, like, compounded transness, which, while somewhat horrifying for him, compels me immensely.
lowkey the constantine show reads as if they had azzarello rewrite the first eleven or so issues of hellblazer and didnt proofread it very much at all. i can see his trademark veneers of frivolous aestheticization and complete lack of depth to anything like its declawed so as to be completely incapable of saying even a single thing worth saying. and then theres an x-files rip off
ollie queen shouldnt even know what airpods are…take those out grandpa
bruce wayne forging common app essay prompts for damian’s secret gotham u application & u know it was the most grueling ordeal he’s ever had to undergo in his life
i do have a strong sort of inordinate fondness for farmer cape but the scene where he has wax up his ass is genuinely horrific. & it has haunted me for the past decade good lord he was prowling around like that EVERY DAY.?
lowk i do think courier is queer but a lot of the textual elements that contribute to the reading of him as a transwoman are…kind of fucking weird. the gender bender instant magic transition trope is actually quite revolting to me.
he has no agency at all like u have to recognize this as being like. fetish-y to a discomfiting extent. yes he’s stuck in a womans body against his will that is immediately sexualized within the narrative and is suddenly pictured in revealing feminine clothing and has to use a feminine name despite being outwardly distressed by being viewed as a woman. but we promise that no one involved in publication is getting off to this.
tangentially the narrative justification of “shapeshifters base body has changed” makes no fucking sense. he could redistribute his body mass to regrow a finger at the expense of his height, both of which were permanent changes. but suddenly goodbye malleability! the rules for fingers are different than the ones for tits, i guess,
zed as kiss in the dreamhouse tour siouxsie with the white streak & thats my honest personal truth. they shaved her bald but i still remember
genuinely desperate to know if this was an intentional reference to goldeneye OK
okay this panel in betsy braddock captain britain #3 irritates me so bad like. it’s genuinely very baffling because it’s out of character for pete wisdom; him and faiza are on a first name basis & he refers to her as dr hussain or excalibur professionally. why manufacture disrespect from a man just so a woman can then correct him? is it intended to be like…a feminist moment…? idk maybe im just not interpreting it correctly but i feel that it debases both of their characters to write this moment when their relationship is based on mutual respect. its way better to have a man consistently show a woman respect (as he does in all of their previous interactions) than it is to have him demean her for no reason except maybe to create this, like, solidarity moment. faiza already experiences derision i really dont see the point of making any come from him.
almost every single instance of faiza & pete referring to each other. btw.
if there is one truth i know its that ollie queen owns a stained crusty uncleanable 60 yr old green rival crockpot model 3100-2. it accounts for 40% of the flavor in his chili
people saying bruce wayne pretends to be stupid as if he’s the scarlet pimpernel📵like someone can be charming and well-liked and funny even if they aren’t stupid i promise you he is not percy blakeney with the mask of an inane fop..acting like he’s attending balls and sharing bon mots with crowds of admirers get a grip
simon tam being younger in firefly is such an interesting concept i need to think on. in the flashback scene in 1x5 (safe) their age gap seems to be 6-ish years. i’d say shorten that to about three years, making simon around 20. adjusting the timeline a bit, he’d be two or three years into an abandoned medical degree and spent the last year looking for river.
i enjoy the idea of him being much more out of his element with regard to medical expertise and experience. he would have to learn more battlefield medicine/improvisational healthcare in the moment and supplement his missed learning with folk medicine & techniques he studies from border planets. walk with me. dried herbs and flowers strung up all over the medbay.
he feels less secure about his place on serenity without the stability of being a doctor; he’s a medical professional, but only technically. while he may be the most qualified person there, he’s a fraud, a runaway medical student. he would posture a lot more when he first bargains to save kaylee, and i think that would complicate his relationship with mal initially when he realizes that not only did he exert authority over mal to stay on the ship, simon also exaggerated his ability to actually help kaylee to do so.
one of the best aspects of the show is the complex interpersonal dynamics. simon steps completely into the caretaking role for river, but now he’s barely older than she is. so he flounders. overcompensates. he’s used to being derided for his age, especially as his family denounces him, so he’s colder and more formal at first than he is in the show. no longer is he an adult man, secure in his medical expertise and the choices he’s made. would his old life be easier to give up for her? he’d still do everything to protect her, yes, but would he still make the same choices to do that?
i also think that this would affect his dynamic with his father. simon is abandoned by his family, his father especially, and he loses more. he has nothing to fall back on: no home, no money, no stability. and he’s young! he hasn’t settled into a career or a life! basically to say he has even worse authority issues. while mal might be gentler with a younger simon, i do think they would clash more frequently than they already do with simon’s authority issues and mal’s mistrust of him over dobson and endangering the crew.
i hate hate hate when non-lantern characters get a ring for any reason. no theyr not worthy they js handed those things out on a whim during a crisis…! this oversaturation, especially coupled with very little effort devoted to character work, weakens the concepts of the corps a lot — i think its lazy writing that disregards the actual lantern corps and their history shoutout geoff johns
wait this is overtly critical perhaps but if you genuinely say you dont like guy gardners bowl cut then idk if you can say youre a fan of him like im sorry it’s integral to his character. what do you know about ernie the battlin’ boy. i dont care if its ugly…..have a tasteful appreciation for it
