Things I Love About Performance Poetry

1 - Creating and sharing

It feels great to make up a poem and then share it with the whole world! (or at least a few people in the back of a pub). It's a way to get instant feedback. I can usually tell whether a poem has worked or not. If the room has emptied by the end of my poem, it's safe to say it wasn't successful!! (That has never happened by the way - most audience members are very friendly and encouraging!). But I love to see how people react when I perform.

Fantastic gig last night at "Big! Poetry", hosted by the amazing samantha_boarer and @robertdgarnham (above). It was my first visit to The Blue Walnut Cafe in Torquay, an extremely welcoming and cosy venue which includes a twenty three seat cinema! I definitely recommend a visit. The open mic was brilliantly varied, from the moving and poignant to the hilarious. The audience (many of whom had come to listen rather than perform) were very warm and friendly, and the evening had a lovely community feel. I did a 25 minute set and was really pleased with the pacing, and the balance of longer poems, shorter poems and anecdotes seemed to work well. The audience seemed to enjoy themselves - there were lots of laughs and I got some very positive comments and feedback afterwards. I had a great time, it was well worth the journey. I arrived back at Vosper Villas at 1.15am still buzzing!
