I remember being a little girl and watching my mother pray. Her dupatta (scarf) delicately wrapped around her head as she stood on my favorite blue janamaz (prayer rug). She would lightly whisper, …

Conquer Your Interview Nerves
I don’t know about anyone else, but job interviews instill a whole new level of nerves in me. You’ve been applying to jobs and internships in hopes that someone will give you a chance. Once you get that one special email or phone call of interest, you become incredibly excited, but that excitement quickly dies down within a millisecond as the reality sets in. “I have an interview! How will I present myself? What questions are they gonna ask me? What did I even do in my past positions? Did I really graduate college?”Somehow all of these questions are doing laps in your mind and it seems overwhelming to say the least. “How do I even begin to prepare for this?” I wish I had some guidance on exactly how I should conduct myself and calm down my extreme nervousness for interviews when I first dived into the world of internships and jobs. They say experience is the best teacher, but let’s be honest; a helping hand along the way doesn’t hurt either!

I lay here wondering what’s keeping me from getting up. Is it the tiredness of my bones or the numbness of my soul? There is so much I have to do and yet here I lay. Thinking and over thinking, making the stress of it all eat me away. So I picked up the Qur'an and recited its verses till I had too many tears to wipe away. Its like Allah’s Word jolted my soul back to life. It penetrated my bones in ways medicine can not. They say that the Qur'an is a miracle alive. I can see why, I can feel how.

Reflections: Ways To Earn Barakah
What is barakah and why should we try our best in attaining it? In its simplest definition, barakah can be described as a bountiful, divine blessing from Allah (SWT). This world is fleeting, but what we do in this life will have a positive impact both here and in the akhirah (afterlife). Everyone wants their good deeds to outweigh their bad ones, so it is wise to do as much good as you can to earn barakah in this life. There are many ways to earn barakah for eternity!
Gift someone a Quran
Every time they read from it, you reap the rewards as well.
Teach someone a verse from the Quran
They might eventually pass that knowledge on and you will earn the rewards for every person who benefits from it.
Donate useful things to the masjid
You can donate abayas, scarves, skirts, etc. that you don’t use anymore. Donate Qurans, Quran holders, Islamic books, tasbeehs, etc. that people can use to further their Islamic knowledge and path.
Spread beneficial Islamic knowledge
When you learn about Islam you can implement that knowledge into your lifestyle and inevitably share what you’ve learned and help other people along the way.
Put in a water pump
There are many charities that you can donate to and they will put in a water pump/water well in your name. You will earn barakah every time someone uses it. Pious Projects of America is a charity that is currently working on projects like this.
Help build a masjid
Donate your time or money to a masjid that is in the process of being built. You can find GoFundMe pages for many new masjid projects!
Sadaqah/Giving to charity
Whatever you have, try your best to sincerely give to and help someone in financial need.
Feed those in need
Whether it’s a homeless person, a shelter, your neighbor, or even an animal do your best to give food to others.
Volunteer at a masjid
Whether it’s maintenance, administrative, organizational, or educational, try to make volunteering in the masjid an active part of your life.
Respect elders
Always be patient with those older than you. Respect them and lend them your time with a sincere, gentle attitude.
Be mindful of the great value and importance of barakah. Sometimes it feels so easy to get consumed within this dunya (worldly life). Do not let it distract you from trying your best to do good while you are here and remembering the deeds and characteristics that Allah (SWT) loves and blesses. If you have any other great tips for increasing your barakah, share them with us!

“I never fit in anywhere. I always felt like I was in a state of limbo. I’m too American for Pakistan and too foreign for America. Pakistan never understood me and America never liked me. My whole life, for as long as I can remember I felt like I have to fight for my place everywhere I go. You will never understand how much being a Muslim in America dictates my life; until you experience it for yourself.”

We are excited to announce that SpillTheChai is officially accepting writing submissions!
We are open to everyone who has something meaningful to say. To us, writing is a form of expression and empowerment. We want to make it known that this is a safe space for your personal thoughts, struggles, or even just a great food recipe you want to share with the world! We’re handing the microphone to you. We encourage and welcome anyone who wants to speak their truth.
Submissions may be anonymous upon request. If you’re interested and want to spill some chai of your own, email us at [email protected].
We look forward to hearing from you!
We should also take note of the many beautiful blessings that are being bestowed upon us right in front of our eyes. As a result of all this madness, people are united. Muslims are praying at airports and people who are protesting with them are cheering them on and even protecting them. We have become so used to Islamophobia that this out pour of support is overwhelming to say the least.

13 Simple Self-Care Tips
There have been a lot of intense events going on within the past week. Although it is very important that we fight back and resist this president, his team, and their racist, islamophobic, xenophobic, and sexist agendas, it is also important that you take care of yourself. It is important that we fight the system, but that is only effective if we are in a good state of being. Don’t feel bad about needing or wanting to step back and take some time for yourself. We all need to take care of ourselves if we really want to make a significant change. Here are a few effective ways to take care of yourself when everything seems to get a little too hectic:
1.) Step away from social media & the news
Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat and even Instagram can get stressful to look at after a while. Don’t feel pressured to constantly post and defend yourself against bigotry. Log out, and direct your mind towards something else. Also, make sure to not constantly watch or read the news. Turn it all off. It’ll do your mind well.
2.) Make some chai (or any tea you prefer)
Most teas have soothing qualities. Brew up your favorite one in a cute cup and sip your way to relaxation.
3.) Netflix & Chill
Literally. Watching a new show or movie on Netflix has proven to be a source of good rest. (Shout out to Netflix for keeping Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham on that Bollywood playlist!)
4.) Read a book
There’s something truly calming about stepping away from technology for a moment and delving into a good book. Allow your imagination to flow and break any tense boundaries in your mind. (I’m currently reading ‘Threading My Prayer Rug’ by Sabeeha Rehman and it seems like a keeper!)
5.) Take a warm shower or bath
Nothing is more physically and mentally cleansing than taking a nice warm shower or bath. Make it even better and treat yourself to one of LUSH’s amazing bath products. You’ll thank yourself in the long run.
6.) Eat a meal you enjoy
Whether you cook it or not, treat yourself to your favorite meal. Nourish your body and mind with good food!
7.) Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!
Sometimes all you need is a nice glass of water to make you feel better. Make sure your body is well hydrated by drinking enough water.
8.) Take a leisurely walk
Step outside and breathe in some fresh air. Take a nice walk around your neighborhood or park and appreciate all of the beautiful nature and life around you. Allow your mind to become one with it all.
9.) Talk to a friend or family member
Talking about politics and humanity all the time can be super draining. Hang out or talk to someone you’re close with who will take your mind off of everything that’s going on.
10.) Give yourself an at-home spa day
Put on a face mask, light some candles, and even take a nap just because! Physically treating your body can do wonders for your mental state as well.
11.) Exercise
Release those feel-good endorphins in your mind by exercising! You can go to the gym, or do some simple workouts right at home. Exercising allows you to release any tensions you may have and makes you feel good both mentally and physically.
12.) Do something you enjoy
Go shopping, go to the movies, or get some frozen yogurt–whatever it may be, treat yourself! If you prefer staying in, then chill out at home. Allow yourself to be happy in taking care of yourself.
13) Prayer
Take the time to be patient in your prayers. Try not to rush through each salah, but center yourself and bring your mind to focus on Allah (SWT) alone. In addition to the five daily prayers, learn something new about Islam. Read and make an attempt to understand the true meanings within the Quran. Make dua to Allah (SWT) and just talk to Him, cry to Him, pray for those suffering and pray for yourself too. Nothing is more peaceful and reassuring than the remembrance of Allah (SWT).
If you do not make it to every protest or rally, don’t feel guilty. If you are not constantly posting about it on social media, don’t feel guilty. Don’t allow yourself to become hopeless and feel as though things will not change. If you need a break from it all, don’t feel guilty. Self care is an important part of your activism. Don’t feel as though you have to sacrifice your mental and/or physical well being.

Fajr passed by as I dreamt on. Zuhr was lost in the day’s work. Asr got skipped as I sipped my tea. Maghrib flew by as I photographed the sunset. Isha was added to the forgotten list. Now here I lay, tossing and turning on my bed, wondering why peace escapes me.
