Since I’m being loud today. 

Stop calling people fake when their younger alters “don’t act their age.” 

Alters act the way they do for several reasons, and age is not super concrete for them. For one, some alters are a certain age, and do not age beyond that. Some alters have been seven years old for decades. They can drive, write books, do taxes, etc. 

Some alters just don’t match their age maturity wise because of trauma. Some alters don’t match their age maturity wise because their body is that of an adult and they just sort of have a similar maturity rate. Pepper, one of my youngers, is 8 years old. She acts like she’s about 13-14. She is mature for her age. So fucking what?

This goes in the other direction too. Older alters can act “younger” than they are. Let’s take Casper–Casper is ageless. You’d assume an ageless alter would be sort of this mature, godlike being, right?

WRONG! 

Casper ranges from the maturity of an immature adult to a fucking two year old. That’s right, putting my boyfriend on blast here. I have a friend who has a two year old daughter, and sometimes, Casper is just as difficult as that two year old. It’s infuriating. 

Anyway, my fucking point is, don’t expect alters to act their age. And don’t use them acting not their age as “evidence” of faking. Buzz off.

speaking of being a massive ecology nerd, guess what season it is, folks! That’s right, it’s FLEDGLING BIRD SEASON here in North America, which means it’s time for an annual reminder that most species of birds have almost no sense of smell. Someone probably told you that if you touch a baby bird, the mother will smell you on it and reject her baby. THAT IS NOT THE CASE. 

Pictured: a young Mourning Dove, after being rescued from the tender mercies of my dog, circa spring 2005. It’s a fledgling! Note how it has most of its feathers, but still looks a bit awkward and scruffy, and, being unable to properly fly, can be caught by an elderly husky or a child. 

Hatchlings: IF it is covered in fluffy down (or partly naked) and cannot flutter successfully, it’s a hatchling, and has fallen from its nest prematurely. Look for the nest- if you find it and can reach it, return baby and then gtfo and let the parents return. If you can’t find the nest, or if you find it in pieces on the ground, use a small box lined with dryer lint or dog hair or similar fluff and attach as close as possible to where you found the bird or where you think the nest was. Return baby!!!! 

Fledglings: If you spot a young bird covered with feathers on the ground, chances are it’s a fledgling (bird tween, can flutter) who is not doing well in flying 101, but it is probably NOT injured or sick. Hanging out on the ground is part of the learning to fly process! If it looks like it’s in immediate danger (i.e. of being run over, stepped on, or eaten by a cat or dog), the best thing you can do for it is to gently scoop it up and place it in the branches of a nearby tree or shrub, and then LEAVE. The parents are likely nearby, and will return once the coast is clear of humans/predators. If it flutter-hops away from you and you can’t catch it, then don’t worry! It just successfully avoided a predator (you), and therefore can probably continue to do so. 

DON’T DON’T DON’T: Try to feed it, bring it into your house or car, or take it to your local vet or animal shelter. 

IF it IS actually for-real injured, you can catch it and contact a local wildlife rehabilitation professional (and then listen to whatever they tell you), but keep in mind that they get a LOT of fledgling birds, and those birds have a pretty high mortality rate. They may tell you that there is nothing you or they can do but allow nature to take its course, and that’s hard, but important to hear and respect.

Be aware that the bird should be considered to be injured if a cat has touched it with teeth or claws, even if it doesn’t look like it’s hurt. Cats’ saliva is full of bacteria that have an extremely high infection and fatality rate for small animals like birds, and it’s usually also on their claws. Contact a wildlife rehabilitator and let them know there was a cat involved.

Apologise to kids

Everyone who spends any time at all around children is going to eventually do something that requires an apology. You might be snappish to a kid, or forget something important to them, or trip and bump into them. No one is perfect, and when these things do happen, it’s important that adults – parents, especially – be able, willing, and ready to apologise to children.

It shows them that they are important to you, their feelings are important to you and that you care enough to try not to hurt them. (Everyone needs this knowledge in order to feel safe in a relationship.)

It models healthy ways to deal with conflict - how to keep a relationship a happy and safe place even after something bad happens.

It models for them how to take responsibility for actions you regret, instead of just pretending those things didn’t happen.

It teaches them that even authority figures can be held accountable for harming less powerful people.

It shows them that the thing you did that requires the apology is a wrong thing to do and that they should not mimic that behaviour.

It teaches them to expect the people around them to be accountable for their own behaviour, and it teaches them not to internalize blame for how other people treat them.

When adults routinely fail to apologise to children, children notice. They learn that the function of an apology is to pacify an authority figure, because that’s the only example they get. They learn that they are not respected or heard and that their feelings won’t matter to others until they, too, have control over someone less powerful.

Children learn from your example even more than they learn from your words. Teach your kids how loving and respectful relationships feel, so they can take that knowledge with them into the rest of their life and make better choices because of what you taught them.

Not a feel. I was just wondering how other people "see" their headspace/otherwold. Does it seem as vivid as meatspace and/or does it feel different in other ways? (I can barely visualise my headspace bc i'm front-stuck, so I thought hearing other people's experiences might help)

Personally, I see my headspace somewhat vividly, since the biggest thing in there is the “fronting house”.

6 months ago I moved in with my parents to be a live-in caregiver for my dad. He almost died last year from leg amputation surgery. I take care of him every single day, 24-hours on call. I have never had a day off. They will not allow me to get another job so I have no income coming in. A condition of my rental agreement was that I live here rent free in exchange for taking care of my dad.

Things have gotten really bad at home over the past few months. The environment has become very toxic and I am being emotionally and physically abused on a regular basis. My time is completely taken advantage of as I am not allowed to prioritize myself, my schedule is controlled as I’m not allowed to have a second job and bring income in. This has caused me to feel an overwhelming amount of stress, sadness, and anxiety. I feel like I’m losing myself.

My boyfriend has offered me to come live with him in Ohio. The plan is to have me move out there in early July, however if I’m able to reach my goal before July, to move out as soon as possible. Unfortunately a few weeks ago I received a traffic ticket for $490. I can’t afford to have my license suspended. I have to have it paid off in full before I move.

I am asking for $1440. That includes paying off my traffic ticket ($490), getting an airplane ticket (roughly $300-350), and my half of 2 month’s worth of rent ($600). If I reach this goal before July I can move out of this hell hell hole as soon as possible.

Feeling fat is not a good reason to end your life.

This is a situation where the tired cliche "suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem" actually applies. There are healthy ways to diet + exercise to lose the extra weight. I lost 23 pounds last year without starving myself, purging, or doing anything to harm my body. It takes dedication and commitment, but losing weight is possible.

Beyond that, being fat is not the worst thing in the entire world. Like...you're fat? Sure...you and more than half the American population.
