Summary:
Sam, Dean, and Castiel arrive to the small resort town of Angel Fire, following the dreams that Dean has received through his bond with Amara with hopes of finding some clue for how to defeat Her. What they find is an archangel with no memory of the last 14 billion years, and no ill-will towards mankind. An archangel of light, surely the best fit to defeat The Darkness.
Heylel, who will become known as 'Lucifer' when he falls.
Excerpt:
The devil’s voice trails off, smile fading as his head tilts forward in recognition of something, a stillness that every predator wears before it becomes violent. Sam knows, distantly, that Lucifer isn’t looking at him, still grasping at the very delusional idea that Lucifer isn’t actually here, that anything from some Amara weirdness to a fear-djinn to some supernatural creature that conjures up your worst nightmares to just garden-variety schizophrenia could make it seem like the devil got out of the box. But before Sam gets the space to recognize the sensation of rats scrambling and scratching inside his ribcage like their tails have been set on fire, Lucifer isn’t there anymore. He hears wings, the soft hush of wings that he’s almost forgotten since the angel fall three years back, and spins on his heel to see Lucifer looming over Castiel, finger pressed to the seam of his own lips, like he’s studying the angel. Like he’s never seen him before. Like he’s never seen another angel.
“What are you supposed to be?” Lucifer mutters at last, following as the dark haired angel steps back, terror still working into his muted expression through wide eyes and pronounced stiffness in his shoulders, hands raised at his sides but empty of useless angel blades. The archangel rolls his eyes, clicking his tongue, but doesn’t give an inch of space to Castiel as he steps forward, barely a second without eye contact. “Okay, that’s a stupid question, I can see the similarities, what you’re the vague impression of. But, why are we making something so weak? It’s… kinda chewed on, aren’t you? You didn’t come out like that, you’ve got history.”
“I’m… an angel,” Castiel ventures, a squint and confusion overriding the terror, but he’s still leaning away. It’s Sam’s turn to clap a hand on Dean’s shoulder, read the tightness of his brother’s jaw, the shock having settled but replaced by a desire to see how well clocking the devil in the face might work, as it would beat watching him vivisect their angel.
Lucifer’s smile flares slowly, finger straightening against his lips, a soft chuckle follows, and finally, he steps back, pointing at Castiel. “You’re an angel. I’m an angel, you’re not anything close to an angel.”
“You’re an archangel, I’m just an angel,” Castiel explains, with a subtle tension releasing from his shoulders, his face smoothing out. His voice might have gotten a little softer, all things that make no fucking sense given the fucked up circumstances and seem like a betrayal all their own, Sam’s palms sweating like the clipped angel was a security blanket that he didn’t realize he was leaning on so much. “Heylel.”
