With the information, Caterina nodded, taking her notes. She paused to take a drink of her coffee, but otherwise listened to Spencer with rapt attention, as was important of a reporter to do. Just as Spencer was finishing up his thoughts, Caterina’s phone buzzed. During interviews, she had her phone on silent, but she did have alarms set to ensure she didn’t loose track of time and got back to the office on time. “Spencer, thank you again for your time.” She reached into her bag and pulled out her business card. “I’m afraid I have to get going, but here is my contact information if you need it.” She grabbed her coffee and stood up, giving a way. “Enjoy the rest of your day.”

Spencer lifted his brows and gave her a small smile. “You’re welcome, I’ll look forward to reading your article,” he replied and reached out to take the card giving it a short glance before looking back in her direction. “Thanks, you too,” he said easily and leaned back in the seat as she left. Spencer lifted his cup to his lips and closed his eyes as he took a sip. Reaching into his back he took out his headphones, putting on some music and enjoying the tea, the background noise and people fading away as the music started.

“Honestly, that’s fair. I did gymnastics for a few years and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.” Beatrice said, scrunching up her nose and shaking her head. She supposed that a costume would be a little different than something designed to perform athletics in, but she couldn’t see why anyone would willingly wear an entire outfit made out of the material.

“I assume it’s because they can’t think past the green?” Beatrice said, shrugging. “Honestly I have no idea why they’ve been going to Tinker Bell first either. I mean, she’s great, don’t get me wrong. But, like. Tinker Bell? Do I look like the sort of girl who would dress us a fairy? Really?” Beatrice shook her head. She had enough knowledge of the fey to know better than to dress up as a fairy. She wasn’t a child anymore. “Oh, no. I’m flying solo on this one. What about yourself? You have a herd?”

Spencer smiled broadly and replied with enthusiasm, “Thank you! And it’s not like I was going for a, “ he raised his hands to make air quotes,” sexy cat.” He stopped  and frowned for a moment. “Although what is sexy about a cat has always confused me.”

“You’ve got a point there with the green, but still, superheroes are much more mainstream now. Maybe even go with the girl from Sky High that could control plants before Tinker Bell.” Spencer pursed his lips before adding, “they’re actually pretty similar costume wise, redhead with green clothes.” He glances around the crowd to see if he could catch a glimpse of Maxine or Dominic, but turned back to her when he cam up empty. “I came with my partners, they’re somewhere around here. No couple outfit tho, not this year.”

“Well, if your luck continues you could do both things.” Spencer then held up his free hand, fingers crossed. “Let’s hope I didn’t jinx you,” he said with a smile. He shook his head before replying. “Don’t worry and I was glad to help, even if I’m sure you would have managed well without me. I should be going though, still got some stuff on my to-do list,” he grinned and took a step backwards. “Do let me know next time we meet what you decided to do with the TV,” Spencer said and said his goodbye before walking away.

“If I win one more TV I’m definitely selling it. Or opening a psychic shop. Or both.” He shook his head ruefully, before stepping back as Spencer did the same. “Yeah definitely, I will let you know when I figure it out! Good seeing you man, see you around.” Trevor lifted one hand in a wave, then turned back to the cart and set about returning it to the store.

“As long as I am very bundled up and not forced to be outside once it’s dark. Unless it’s to make a snowman.” There were always exceptions to the rule, Maggie felt, when it was snowing at night time. “Spring is good, once it’s past the melting snow and constantly raining. When things are starting to bloom and you’re seeing more animals again.” And the days were getting longer and there was actually sun, she thought, but didn’t ad.

“You have to promise not to laugh.” Maggie said, glancing from the cover of her book over to Spencer. “It’s Midnight Sun.” Her name had been at the top of the holds list on the library, and there was a distinct possibility that she’d dropped everything and ran to pick it up when she’d received the notification that it was available.

Spencer laughed softly and nodded. “You’re making some very valid points there, all of which I agree with. I can’t wait for spring now,“ he said with a small smile. At her words, he raised a brow curiously. He pressed his lips together to keep the laugh in and nodded slowly, as if laughing silently. “Okay, you have to tell me of any highlights. I just need to know,” he said once he thought he could speak without laughing although the almost laughter could be heard in his voice.

“Yes, please let’s,” Charlotte pleaded, mostly to the set up in front of them. She set her phone on the ground between them so they could both read the spell, and adjusted her grip on the crystal and candle to make room for Spencer to complete their circuit. Charlotte took a deep breath–centering herself and focusing on her intentions–nodded at Spencer, and the pair began the incantation. 

“Guiding spirits we ask your charity, Lend us your focus and clarity, Lead us to the one we cannot find, Restore that and my peace of mind.”

It would probably take a moment to kick in–she knew that–but still. Maybe she altered the wrong word, maybe her intent wasn’t clear, maybe the type of candle was more important than she realized. She worried her lip between her teeth and glanced up at Spencer. “Do you think it worked?”

Spencer read the spell in his mind a few times, letting the power of the words build in him before they were going to release onto the winds. Feeling satisfied that he wasn’t going to jumble the words, he reached for the candle and crystal as well, the energy coursing down his arms into the objects. He glanced up at Charlotte and nodded in reply, focusing on what they were trying to accomplish as they started the spell.

The last words felt like a hum in the air around them, he could still fill the charge at the edge of his mind like a low vibration before it faded away. Spencer took a few deep and slow breathes, closing his eyes as the buzzing subsided. He opened his eyes when Charlotte spoke and took a moment before replying, giving a short nod. “I believe so, I could feel the energy build and leave. We might just need to walk around and... be guided.”

“It can. But it’s better than the winter sun.” Maggie felt that she sported her sunglasses more in the winter than she did in the summer. She knew it got her some weird looks, but she didn’t do half as much squinting because of the glare off of the snow, so she was clearly the one winning in this scenario.

“Yeah, reading outside is pretty tricky in the summer.” Maggie agreed, basking in the sun. “I wish I could just bottle this up, bring it out when it starts to snow. I miss the warmth in the winter. Being cold is the worst.”

“Oh yeah, but I do enjoy being nice and cosy in winter clothes, standing in the crisp air,” he said with a pleased smile, eyes closed while facing the sun, “and getting that little dose of sunlight barely warm my skin.” After a moment he turned to look at Maggie. “I do prefer this season to be honest. And spring. When the air is cooler and the sun feels hot on the skin.” Spender moved to lean on an elbow and nodded towards her book. “What were you reading?”

“I’m shocked.” Beatrice said, putting on a expression of mock outrage. Imagine that, his costume barely passing muster. “Most people don’t go around wearing whiskers.” She agreed. “Yes, I think that the tail might have helped your case.” She agreed, looking over his costume. “Or at least some kind of accessory.”

“Sorry.” She said, noticing that he stepped out of the way of her flailing, resting her drink on the edge of the bar in front of her. “I know.” She said, stopping herself from throwing her arms out at the last moment. She was not going to spill her drink. She was not. “I wish I could tell you. I have to assume that it’s because they think that someone like me can’t possibly know anything about superheroes and comic books even though, hello, it’s 2020 they’re mainstream now. Therefore… girl in a green costume must be Tinker Bell.” She rolled her eyes.

Spencer pursed his lips and looked down at his outfit. “I wasn’t going to wear spandex.” He scrunched his nose, looking back up at her. “Not really my scene, that.”

“No worries,” he said with a chuckle and took a careful step back into his previous position. Spencer cringed and shook his head. “Yeah, at this point it’s on them. Also, who thinks of Tinker Bell first? That’s the strangest part to be honest,” he said. “Oh, are you doing a group costume?”

          Madison didn’t think that her costume was that original compared to some people. She wasn’t here for the costumes, but for the company and the chance to get out for a bit. She needed to have some fun. Not everything had to always be about work. She was glad to be out though. Bar crawls were fun and it was neat to see a bunch of creative people in one place. Madison was a few glasses of wine in at this point, so she wasn’t thinking about what she was saying. “A melted dinosaur. That’s a new one…” she said tilting her head to the side. “I’m gonna go with half baked alien? I really have no clue. Your guess is probably better.” 

Spencer chuckled. “Well, it seems that whatever it is we are in an agreement. Melted, baked, not too far off one from the other,” he said with a nod in her direction. Turning his head, he stared at the costume once more before letting out a cast. “Slime! It totally looks like slime, doesn’t it?” Spencer turned towards her with an exited expression as if making some big discovery.

“Sure, sure. Clearly.” Beatrice said, raising a brow as she took in his costume, if it could even be called that. A cat, huh? There was only the minimum effort put in. The ears were cute, she’d give him that. But really, even just a little bit more effort could have taken the costume farther. At least he was laughing about it, it meant that he was well aware of the faults of his costume.

“YES! Thank you!” Beatrice exclaimed, throwing her hands out in her excitement, her drink dangerously close to slipping onto him. “You would not believe the number of times I’ve been asked if I’m Tinker Bell! Hello, does this look like Tinker Bell?? I think not.”

Spencer grinned at her and shook his head. “Can you believe they almost didn’t let me in?” he said and waved at his head. “I don’t go out like this on the regular, maybe the eyeliner yes, but not whiskers.” He took a swing of his beer and turned to her with a frown. “I shouldn’t have left the tail at home, huh?”

Taking a quick step to the side, Spencer eyed her drink carefully. Being wet and sticky was not on the agenda for the evening. “Tinker Bell?” he repeated, incredulous and looked her up and down. “How does anyone think Poison Ivy is Tinker Bell? The only thing in common is the green and then they might as well have said Green Lantern.”

          Madison hadn’t been to a costume party in so long. It seemed like a gamble in a place like Edgewood where weird things always seemed to happen anyway. She really didn’t want to accidently get caught up in some random curse or something and be stuck in her costume until someone managed to undo the curse. Maybe that was just for the movies, but with Edgewood, she never knew. Still, she kept her costume simple: a zombie. Lots of people seemed out and dressed in some funky costumes, which made the night more enjoyable. She turned to the person beside her. “Okay, I know you’re supposed to ask what the person you’re talking to is, but isn’t it more fun to talk about what you think other people are dressed like? Sure, that person’s a witch, but what is that?” she pointed to an intricate costume that probably came from a television show she didn’t watch.

Returning from the bar with a bottle of water, Spencer slipped around people. Luckily with these kind of events he could just pass through people without worrying too much. It was dark enough and everyone was drinking, the chances of someone actually seeing it happen were slim. He stopped beside a column and surveyed the space. Catching a glimpse of Dominic in the crowd made him smile as the person next to him addressed him, snorting at how obvious his ‘costume’ was. Spencer glanced in her direction and then followed her line of vision to spot the person in question. “Huh. I would say a dinosaur. A melted one,” he said and tilted his head to the side with a frown. “What’s your guess?”

Beatrice resisted the urge to sigh into her drink. She was having fun. Really, she was. Or, she had been, until she’d been ditched. She knew that she should probably be more upset about the fact that her friends had dragged her out on this bar crawl and then ditched her, but she wasn’t. She’d known going into the night that there was a chance that she’d be ditched, which is why she’d opted out of the suggested group costume and had thrown together her own costume. She was supposed to be Poison Ivy, but she wasn’t sure how well she was pulling it off. 

“So, what are you supposed to be?” she asked, turning to the person next to her.

Spencer stood to the side, a bit out of the way, some might even say hiding. Nursing a beer, he kept his eyes on the crowd appreciating some of the costumes. Having an intricate outfit wasn’t for him, having to keep an eye on too many components only stressed him out. So, as always, he opted for the most minimal and quickest Halloween costume. Still, he applauded anyone that went all the day out with theirs. 

Startled out of his musings, Spencer turned to face the person speaking, making sure it was actually addressed at him before replying. “Um, well, a cat.” He couldn’t help but snort at himself. “You’re Poison Ivy I Think?”

“Apparently,” Trevor laughed along. “What I have no idea though.” He nodded appraisingly at the idea of a home cinema. “I might, you know, that’s not a half bad idea.” Trevor shrugged. “The plan so far was just to either sell it or to gift it to my teenage brother to keep peace in the apartment.” As Spencer detailed his errands, he gave him a rueful smile. “Sounds about right, that’s most of my purchases these days too.” But when he watched Spencer pick up the bag of groceries, clearly already on his way out of the store, Trevor straightened up. “But hey man, don’t let me keep you if you’ve got any cold stuff in there. I really appreciate your help with the TV.”

Heather gave a wry smile in agreement. “Amen to that.” She raised her water glass in a toast.  “Or, rather anything other than ‘amen’.” With a chuckle at that, she let the subject drop. 

Her mind started going through what they would need for a magic lab, which was a funny phrase to think. It would be very helpful to have someone who knew the area working with her and finding a place. “I’ll start making a list of what we will need,” Heather said as she started jotting some ideas on her notepad. “Would they be interested in this?” she inquired. She was quite sure that Maxine had magic, but wasn’t sure about Dominic. Heather returned the smile, also getting excited about the prospective of a new project. “Exactly! With science we are always taught the basis, and the development of concepts and understanding over time. I could never just accept what I was taught about magic at face value.”

Spencer couldn’t suppress the snort and raised his own cup of tea in mock salute. Noticing that he almost finished the tea, he drained the last of it and set down the cup to the side. 

He nodded and opened his notebook on the last page, writing down to look into a place for their experiments. “I’ll try to do the same but I’m sure you have a better understanding on how to proceed here. So, just let me know if you want me to check something,” he said with a nod, looking up from the page. “It might get... dangerous, not gonna lie, so I need to let them know. They might be curious and worried,” he huffed a chuckle, ”but they could offer some ideas.”  In any case they needed to know what he is up. Spencer smiled at Heather, glad to have someone that shared his experience with magic. “Yes! Maybe we can also look into individual abilities as well, I was always curious about that.”
