After spending days with his extended family, Zane needed a break from that number of people in a relatively contained space.  So taking a moment to himself, he just went on a walk.  Much like at Hogwarts, though, he didn’t make it too far for too long before running into someone that he knew.  As both his year mate and his house mate, he knew he should at least say hello.  “Lark!  Good to see you.  Having a good break, I hope?”

Lark looked up from the book she was holding to see Zane was there. “Hmm, oh hullo! I hope I’m having a good break too,” she replied, fumbling around for something to use as a bookmark. Since she was holding a pretty thick text, it would be quite a lot of work to make up time if she lost her place. “Mostly spending time with my family and arranging furniture. How about you? Hopefully a less mobile time.”

   claramae stifled a laugh. “oh? because that’s such a BAD thing?”  she paused to check her watch, which wasn’t her usual one, as she was sure the muggles surrounding them would notice a smaller version of herself waving up at them when its arms weren’t pointing to the current time. “well, do whatever you want. i’m off,” she turned to walk away. if she didn’t catch a taxi now, then she wouldn’t make it in time to meet her friends from queens gate at one of the local bar haunts in kensington. it was too much of a hassle to try to find appropriate places to disapparate from and apparate to without breaking a law by accident. going straight from tea with her grandmother to a place serving cold hard libations may have seemed odd to some, but she was used to separating each piece of her life from the other. 

    as the sleek black car with the appropriate labelings pulled up beside her, claramae glanced back at lark. despite her rude comment, the blonde seemed to be off-kilter… for her. she’d feel bad leaving her there without offering to help. “look, did you want a ride somewhere?”

Right. She wasn’t supposed to answer rhetorical questions. If she went off on those sorts of tangents, hardly any conversation went somewhere nice. And with how Lark was prone to cyclical logic when it came to conversations with Claramae. Sometimes, she enjoyed the arguments. Sometimes, she just got left behind in the dust. Annoying. Lark stuffed her hands in the pockets of her jacket, and offered up a hard look. She was anxious, out of sorts, and somewhat concerned that her grandmother had ended up some place weird without her.

“I- Yeah?” Common sense told her that this was a bad idea, but Lark apparently could not say something reasonable to save her life today. She glanced vaguely in the direction that she thought she had come from. Where the heck was this car even going? “Mum told me never to get into a car with a stranger, but I don’t think we’re that kind of strange.” It made no sense, but she was getting anxious again.

      “attraction and romance don’t always have to go hand in hand, no, but it’s quite nice when they do.” pippa replied with a shrug. “personally i LOVE being romanced… boys will do anything if they think it might turn your favor. i haven’t carried my books to class all term!”  as for more information on her holiday plans, she made a lip zipping motion as she smiled cheekily. no, she was going to play this one close to the chest. 

“Well, no... You’re not going to give up anything besides cryptic advice, are you.” It would be nice if attraction always was followed up by romance, but Lark had to sigh at the notion that she just might wind up hopeless on the romantic front indefinitely. The wheels did start turning though. “So, hypothetically, if a girl lets someone carry her books around, it could be a sign that she’s at least a little sweet on someone?”

    claramae hadn’t meant to accuse lark of stalking her; she’d simply been supplying a reason to why a body double of herself would show in response to the witch’s somewhat ridiculous inquiry. why it was so hard for them to have a non-choppy conversation with zero misunderstandings, she’d never know; but alas, here they stood once again at odds. the only new element was the ground they both stood on. she offered a noncommittal shrug in response to lark’s observation. they were in mundane london– and?

    “why aren’t you planning on spending much time here?” she asked, thick but maintained eyebrows furrowing as she tucked a stray chocolate curl behind her ear. “pardon me if you mind me asking. it just seems like a waste, getting all done up and then not going inside. even if getting all done up for tea is a social construct,” she giggled slightly with a shrug, moving to smooth out her gloves. “you’re already here. you may as well treat yourself.” unless lark didn’t like FOOD, though claramae was pretty sure that it’s something universally enjoyed.

If Lark did not interpret every statement in the worst way possible, then something was seriously wrong. Letting her guard down for too long would be even worse, though. Getting walked all over sounded like the worst kind of hell.

“This isn’t exactly my scene, okay? I was planning on going somewhere else that didn’t make me feel so... I don’t know, like I should be standing next to you.” She crossed her arms, and wished that it was possible to disappear in one’s coat away from a situation. “Not that I really know of anywhere else to go,” Lark added, not realizing that she had said it aloud until after it had happened. This was such a mistake already, and now they were going to have to do this thing together. The worst part was that she could imagine her family laughing at her when she (hypothetically) told this story to them later on.

“I think you know it in your gut,” Cayden nodded. “Something in you just knows that’s what you’re meant to do even if you haven’t tried all possibilities,” he shrugged. “To each their own, really. And what non-profitable enterprise do you wish to go into?” he asked. “I say go for it so long as you don’t mind the lack of money part.” 

“Maybe your gut doesn’t start churning at the idea of having to make any kind of decision...” She shook her head, and rubbed at her neck. “I want to study magical history. Maybe even write better history books. Generations are running through Bathilda Bagshot’s stuff, and it’s generally, but nobody’s taking anything away from them but elitist attitudes. I don’t mind the lack of money part, because I know nobody wants to think that maybe their people weren’t the good guys.”

   there was a long pause. “you know,” jay stroked his chin. “i’m usually the one who’s setting the guidelines and stuff for these things. not the other way around.” –and he definitely had enough experience to know what was the norm, and what wasn’t. business deals were, after all, apart of the gryffindor’s everyday activities. there was always a pureblood looking to experiment with muggle contraband, or just the regular joe schmo trying to get something that was hard to procure outside the halls of hogwarts. so, he was kinda weirded out by lark telling him how it was gonna be. that just wasn’t how it worked.

“I said it was up for negotiation, didn’t I? If you want to revise the terms entirely, I couldn’t really complain,” Lark replied, crossing her arms and doing her very best to look absolutely unconcerned about that response. He had not actually explained what his guidelines would be just yet (or he had, and she had not read through anything. Good chance of that, actually), so she was going to fly this one by the seat of her pants. “See, I assumed that since this might be outside of your usual business, I should come with a preliminary plan.”

      “i wasn’t trying to be thrilling - i was being coy.” pippa replied with a hint of a smile, shrugging her shoulders. there was one particular person that her eyes seemed to stray towards whenever he was in a room but she knew she certainly shouldn’t. he was older, mind you, and the older brother of a close friend… it was hardly appropriate! but was that going to stop her? that was still up for debate.  “romance always comes when you least expect it. i met my first boyfriend at a football match i didn’t even want to go to! it just.. HAPPENS, for lack of a better way to describe it.”

“It isn’t like the two are mutually exclusive.” Lark couldn’t help but laugh. Was there any point of telling a story of any sort of romantic purposes if there was no build-up, no nothing? “No, I’m going to have to disagree. Attraction happens all in a moment, and then romance is the arduous, absolutely painful process that follows in the aftermath. You’re not going to give any more details about your mistletoe buddy?”

  “…well, if i were a suspiciously similar lookalike, it’s doubtful i’d know it– unless i’d been hired by myself for this occasion.” claramae raised an eyebrow. “though i’m not sure what occasion this would be specifically. stalking, perhaps?”

   it didn’t happen often, but on a few OCCASIONS, she found herself running into classmates in the muggle world outside the halls of hogwarts. it was just a reminder that she wasn’t the only one with roots firmly planted in both the magical and non-magical spheres; but this was a fact that many remained unaware of as far as she went. after all, there were many halfbloods who’d never stepped foot in the muggle world– and she was a slytherin, so that usually meant people assumed she was one of them. it was that which made the truth of her attendance even more ironic; she’d just parted ways with her muggle grandmother– her mother’s mother to be exact. they always met for tea over the holidays. “who doesn’t like afternoon tea?” she questioned, her lips quirking to the side. “i’m personally a fan of the little crustless sandwiches– the biscuits as well.”

“We’re in the midst of mundane London,” Lark said, using a euphemism in cases they were over overheard. As much as Lark loathed the UK’s wizarding government, she could get behind the basic tenets of the Statute of Secrecy. Well it was posh muggle London, which made this meeting at least not entirely ridiculous.“It’s simply unexpected, I suppose. You here. Alone. Here.” 

She fiddled with her hands a bit. “No stalking. I wasn’t planning to spend much time here,” Lark said grumpily. Not that she had been planning on much of anything. This was all clearly a mistake of an encounter, and there was a good chance it would be best if she got out of here before she found herself debating afternoon tea. No, she was not going to argue about sandwich preferences. There were some things not worth getting started on if she could help it.

“So here are the details. I’m looking to buy a Christmas present that says, ‘I am fulfilling the obligation of giving you a decent gift so that you continue to send me decent gifts.’ Is that doable? If it helps, he’s related to me, and I don’t need to give it to his face,” Lark said, gesticulating in hopes that it would help get her point across. “You’ll receive a consultation and confidentiality fee. Can be negotiated. Seem fair enough?”

“Not on purpose, but it’s an added bonus for certain. I like the work a lot. There’s always something interesting going on. No day is the same when you investigate mysteries,” Cayden nodded. “Sometimes dangerous,” he shrugged. “It takes a certain person to do the work. But I’ve found it’s what I do best.” Cayden laughed and shrugged a bit more. “Truthfully I don’t know.” 

”I don’t know if you can really know what you do best unless you try most things, but if it feels right, then you must have made the right choice,” Lark rambled on. “Any advice for someone whose passions don’t lie in the realm of profitable enterprises? I still don’t actually want the Ministry.”

Lark had managed to lose track of her grandmother around forty-five minutes ago. If something actually went wrong, though, she probably would have heard the woman by now. It was nice sometimes to have such an active family matriarch. So she was on her own now without an agenda... until she spotted one of her classmates. While uncertain of whether she should be pleased or wary to have a distraction, she figured it would be more interesting to approach and say something rather than pretend to not see Claramae.

“Please tell me you’re not a suspiciously similar lookalike. Or don’t.” Lark put her hands on her hips. “I just didn’t imagine I’d see you of all people out here.” Wherever this was.

KYLE CONCEDED with a nod and a shrug; she did make a point there, he won’t deny. the redhaired wizard smiled sheepishly and rubbed the back of his neck. “oh, right… ‘m sorry. i forgot,” he apologized. “but yeah… it’s usually the same people and they talk about the same things. gets rather boring quickly, honestly.”

“This is really my first time at one of these events, and I can’t say that I want a repeat,” Lark said, shaking her head. How had he managed to forget that already? Still, she struggled to really be aggressive with him. “Then what’s the point? Enjoying the event itself? Waiting until you need something and not wanting to send someone owl post?”

    head swung low for a moment as his king was destroyed, both amusement and surprise pulling over the expression of the prideful man. “you really have gone and beat me. i should’ve listened to your confidence when i made the request to play a friendly match of chess.” he mused, a smirk easily forming on his lips. “so what is it i owe you, huh? i hear butter beer is the popular drink around here though i’m more of a firewhisky man myself.”

Lark had absolutely no idea how she had managed to accomplish that one (strategy was less of her strong point), but she supposed that she had gotten lucky. Ordinarily, she was quite a competitive person, but he was taking all of the fun out of it. Trying not to seem like anything was off, she shrugged and attempted a novel approach. “Maybe the best prize is being able to gloat over it in public view? I don’t know, it was a good game, right?”

     “TRUE,” HE conceded. “but i prefer to think of it more as… i’ve grown up and have decided that my parents were completely wrong about everything and are actually very shitty.” back then, he would have defended them, but now? he was just fed up with their shit. “i usually throw myself into work, but work can only do so much to get your mind off things,” he sighed. “drinking, travelling… i’ve tried it all.”

“What an epiphany you’ve had!” Lark said, raising an empty glass that she seized up. Growing up was simultaneously the best and the worst. Knowing more always did come with a price, now didn’t it? “You should look into different options. You think you’ve tried it all, but here you are. Maybe see what Grace has done that you haven’t.” She took that as her cue to try to rise and escape. “Shall I leave you with that thought?”

“It’s nice being able to say ‘work’s going well. Lots of cases. Can’t tell you about a bloody one of them though’ and move on to less boring conversation topics,” Cayden nodded. His mother was full of the pureblood only slytherin mindset and everything that came with it, wanting to make a name for herself. Cayden. Well, he was determined, he’d do what it took to get a job done, but he didn’t care about a name or blood make up. “That they are. Or mother at least. It’s.. any Ministry worker.”

“Did you do this on purpose, or do you really like what you do? I almost wish I’d tried to go for that path, but I’m sure your department is either ultimately disappointing or way too dangerous,” Lark said with a sigh. A person had to be really interesting if they wanted to get through social occasions without the crutch of work, though. “Seriously? It’s not like you work for some little shop. Is she all right in the head?”
