The reason that there are turn lanes in the road, are to make turns safer and easier, while not slowing down traffic around you. When you don't get in to the turn lane, but instead come to an almost full stop while creeping towards the turn lane, you give other drivers headaches. Great job to our driver for paying attention!

The FMCSA International Roadcheck annual inspection blitz starts tomorrow (June 5th) and will end Thursday (June 7th). After last year’s top driver-related violation was found to be hours of service violations (32.3%) Hours-of-Service Compliance will be the focus of this year’s event, as well as ELD compliance.

During Roadcheck 2018, inspectors will primarily conduct the North American Standard Level I Inspection, a 37-step procedure that includes an examination of both driver operating requirements and vehicle mechanical fitness.

Here are a few tips that will help you prepare for the upcoming Roadcheck 2018:

· Look for observable defects, such as a broken windshield or a cracked taillight. Also, make sure that you are wearing your seatbelts. During Roadcheck 2017, 710 seatbelt violations were recorded.

· A suspected moving violation is estimated to trigger 25% of roadside inspections. It is crucial to avoid unsafe driving behaviors, such as speeding, running a stop sign, hard cornering, etc.

· Make sure to check your lights and tires during every pre-trip inspection. Violations related to broken lights and tires amount to more than 30% of all roadside violations.

· Make sure to have all in-cab documentation in place. For example, ELD user manual, instruction sheet in case of ELD malfunctions, ELD instruction sheet, a supply of blank driver’s records of duty status graph-grids, etc.

International Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with around 17 trucks and buses inspected, on average, every minute in Canada, the United States and Mexico during a 72-hour period. Since its inception in 1988, more than 1.5 million roadside inspections have been conducted during International Roadcheck campaigns.

Personal conveyance is the movement of a commercial motor vehicle (CMV) for personal use while off-duty. A driver may record time operating a CMV for personal conveyance as off-duty only when the driver is relieved from work and all responsibility for performing work by the motor carrier. The CMV may be used for personal conveyance even if it is laden, since the load is not being transported for the commercial benefit of the motor carrier at that time. Personal conveyance does not reduce a driver’s or motor carrier’s responsibility to operate a CMV safely. Motor carriers can establish personal conveyance limitations either within the scope of, or more restrictive than, the guidance provided here.
