The novel was a way for trans, gender nonconforming, and queer people to realize ourselves. It told us we aren’t alone. However, when the publisher went bankrupt, Leslie had to struggle to regain ownership over hir own novel.“I had to work to recover my rights to Stone Butch Blues. When the first publisher went into Chapter 11 court, I had to spend thousands of dollars of my wages on legal fees to recover the right to this novel… While very ill in Spring 2012, I recovered my rights again.”

there's a little part of Marion that sometimes gets ugly and tells him she's not into you, she's into the scar, she wasn't drawn to *you*, she was drawn to what she couldn't fully remember. it's directly adjacent to the part of him that said he wouldn't be anyone if it weren't for Sean and in his brothers and their friendship, the part of him that still thinks of himself as hollow inside, like everything good in him came from someone else. that part of him retreats when Jean spends some time looking into his eyes, just his eyes, or she traces his lips with her fingers, or she presses their hands together and runs her thumb over his knuckles

there's a part of Jean that has cultivated and curated her appearance for years so as to a) not disgrace her father's professional image, and later b) get taken seriously. and 0% of anything she has done has been for the purpose of being Desired, in fact if someone else's desire factored into her appearance at all it was likely with a notion of if I project that I am extremely fastidious, perhaps that will deter potential suitors and spare me the distraction. but like. along came Marion and his intense gaze, and then the heat and speculation in Sean's stare, and perhaps she miscalculated? does this sort of thing work on some people? and does she *want* it to not work anymore??

there's a part of Sean that knows people don't *see* a monster when they look at him, that's what makes it so insidious. but you go long enough living with someone, especially if they knew you Before, they ought to be able to see through you to what's really there. and yet the longer it goes on, the more Marion and Jean insist on calling him handsome, on touching his face. it's easier to accept someone calling you pretty than someone calling you good, but the longer it goes on the more those two things start to feel the same. it's not possible Sean's wrong about himself, it's *not*, but maybe this is a democracy. maybe majority rules. maybe he starts to believe it in their bed before he lets himself believe it anywhere else

Young queers who say "I don't consent to be part of your kink" don't realize that that was the ACTUAL legal justification for arresting trans women and cross dressers until the 1980s. Unless someone is performing a public sex act, you don't get to consent to how I dress, ever.

Image 2 ID: tumblr tags. Part of being in public is that you're gonna see some stuff that you might not want to see. Otherwise you're gonna start policing relatively innocuous behaviors, and that's always gonna hit vulnerable groups first. Sometimes you can just go "I don't like that," and move on. Disgust is not a moral issue.
